Quintessential New England ! This "Home away from Home" is a beloved gem by returning vacationers & locals alike, located on a very unique Peninsula directly on the open ocean just 13 houses down from the Old Scituate Lighthouse (& Beach). The house was built in 1920 and still retains a lot of the original yesteryear cottage charm but has been completely modernized. There is a friendship staircase leading up to the front door with a covered wrap around porch on the full front, side and back facing the ocean. Inside on the main floor you'll find an open floor plan with the kitchen and dining area open to the living room w/ fireplace & a wall of windows looking directly at the open ocean and Minot's Light. Guest Bedrooms have views of beautiful Scituate Harbor. Kitchen has a gas stove, dishwasher, microwave & garbage disposal and is fully equipped. Down sofa, ottoman, wicker love seat & chairs. Second floor is original matchstick paneling - Full bathroom, three bedrooms (two with Queen beds and one with a Twin). Master Bedroom faces the ocean. The downstairs is finished and can be used as a fourth bedroom (en suite) or kids TV/Gaming/Playroom with a Queen futon. Full bath w/ Jetted Jacuzzi Tub & separate shower. W&D. Very Rare: On Site Parking for 8 - 10 cars (if parked properly). Very short walk to Lighthouse Beach, Sand Hills or Museum Beach. Beach Sticker provided for access to all 5 Public Beaches. Just bring clothes & food, we take care of the rest !
NOTE: 2 new Flatscreen TV's replace the ones in the pictures & the carpets have been removed to show off the original hardwood.
We love our visits to Walkabout Cottage. We were there two years ago and this time was even better. The house is in great condition and had everything we needed throughout our stay. You could not ask for a better New England experience. The ocean is everywhere you look, the lighthouse and harbor are a quick walk away, you go to sleep to the sound of waves on the rocks and wake up to the drone of lobster boats on their rounds. On stormy nights, the wood-burning fireplace provides a cozy setting for reading, watching TV, or just watching the tide. Christine and Dave are great! They are there if needed, but otherwise let us enjoy the home as our own for the week.
We had a great time visiting with our local family members and Walkabout Cottage provided a spectacular ocean backdrop to refresh us for each day's activities. We will definitely return when plans bring us back to the area.
This place is amazing! Coming from Pennsylvania, we wanted something completely different from the normal vacation, spent with extended family. My husband and I fell in love with the Walkabout Cottage and the surrounding area of Situate!
It is located within walking distance from a beautiful lighthouse and a pebble beach (which was perfect for our 4yr old) where we could spend our day looking for treasures around the rocks. Our favorite place to relax was on the back porch listening to the waves crashing on the sea wall. Within the first day of being here, I could feel all my stress dissipate away. Sunrise or sunset there are always beautiful views no matter where you are in the house.
The owners live across the street, which is very convenient if we had questions on the area or the house. I would highly recommend this place if you're looking to "get away" from all the hustle and bustle of life.
The Walkabout Cottage is more like a Home away from Home. We sold our house and decided to have an adventure by the sea. We arrived at the Walkabout to find a most breathtaking view the minute we walked in the door. The open floor plan gives a feeling of being one with the sea. The house is well stocked with everything you need, and if you need anything the very accommodating landlords are quick to meet those needs. We have plenty of room for our family to visit and stay overnight with a separate 'suite' downstairs as well as beds upstairs. The main bedroom is as close to being on a boat as you can get!
We spent our first winter here as adventurers. And quite a winter it was!
The house has a variety of places to enjoy yourself, a flat screen tv, a table for art projects upstairs and plenty of space for games, puzzles, eating and writing on the first floor. A full laundry and Jacuzzi tub on the ground floor.
No two sunrises are alike and the sound of the waves and the wind lull you to sleep. One September day I counted 35 boats on the water, quite something. This is a very special place with good walking routes around the lighthouse point as well as sidewalks to town.
If you ever thought the ocean was where you wanted to be, this is the place, safe and sound, The Walkabout Cottage.

What a beautiful home... everything we would need, unbelievable views of the ocean, you could hear it (which we love)... kitchen is complete, grill worked like a charm, laundry room was perfect, television w/ cable and internet worked as they should! And Christine was a delight and a pro!
Hopefully we'll get to come back, although we'll have to book early I'm sure!

.....and for that I am grateful!
I have just returned to Miami from our fourth stay at this house in four years and it was, as usual, perfect. The home remains exactly as the photos depict - a comfortable, immaculate beach cottage that sleeps an army full of family (and those teenagers) without the worry of stepping on any extra visitors snoozing on air beds across the floor. Full kitchen with dishwasher (thank God), full compliment of all linens and towels, plenty of parking (oh, those teenagers!) and directly on the ocean. Non-snoopy landlord across the street if any issues should arise - although for us, none ever have. So why am I writing another review?
I'd read a recent review of the property and would like to respectfully disagree on a couple of points, simply because for all northeastern seaside and harbor towns, many folks make their living for an entire year by renting out interesting and fun properties during the summer season. So it's important to add a few details.
This home is oceanfront. You hear the waves crashing on a windy night, the tide gently pulling out on a calm evening. Most homes directly on the water utilize all plastic furniture to avoid dangerous deterioration by the salt. Any responsible owner is careful to guard against the elements so outdoor furniture doesn't cause injury. Stairs from the seawall down to the water are often pulled up as a good high tide will wash them away - that is how close you are to the shore line. The local beach, called Sandy Beach because...well, you get the idea...is a very short walk and has a spectacular view. An even shorter walk in the other direction brings you to the cove at the lighthouse. A smaller beach when the tide is in, but the two jettys for sunning and jumping into the water are a local hightide favorite. We tanned and swam every day except one. Take it from a chick who doesn't find marching around as much of a joy as other folks seem to love. In no way are the description or photos of this rockin' house a misrepresentation of a great New England house by the sea.
The entire downtown of Scituate is 1.2 miles from this spot, and with several eateries before you actually hit Front Street, it has cafes, restaurants, groceries, movies, a bookstore, boutiques and local joints. It is truly an awesome summer hangout.
If you are interested in a great summer by the sea, take a week or so right here. Just not my week...
We, a family of 5, spent 7 days in the house. Due to the photos, we expected direct beach access and were disappointed to learn that the little bridge on the photo leads onto a 10 ft high wall; beach access was only available over staircases the neighbor house had - and which the neighbors took away for the last three days. The beach itself in front of the house was disappointing as well, so that we had to move the family to a beach nearby, short distance, but driving only. The best area of the house of the house is the deck, but unfortunately we had to put two small, unstable plastic tables together to be able to eat outside with our family.
The house itself is quaint and nicely kept.
