This spacious, open-plan house in the heart of the Vallespir area of the Languedoc Roussillon is in the peaceful hamlet of Las Burgueres, 5km from the market town of Ceret and 3km from the villages of Maureillas and St Jean Pla de Corts. Centrally heated, it is warm and well equipped for year round holidays in the foothills of the French Pyrenees and is an ideal location from which to explore this historic and naturally beautiful region. Popular with walkers, cyclists, golfers, artists, lovers of peace and the great outdoors, the house is only 30 minutes drive from the coast and even closer to the Spanish border. With 7 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms (one ensuite) and two separate WCs it provides ideal accommodation for two large families or groups of friends. It is situated up a track in what used to be agricultural land and is surrounded by fields and wildlife (including the neighbour’s horses and donkey).
It has been a holiday house for our family for the last 14 years and so is a comfortable home from home. In summer its 12m pool and tennis court, set in the large garden, provide entertainment for all ages without the need to leave the house. For those seeking other distractions the beautiful town of Ceret, with its restaurants, art museum and local amenities (hospital, shops, market) is only a 7 minute drive away while the old village of Maureillas, with its bakery, village shops and great restaurant and bar is within cycling distance for morning croissants! The lakes at St Jean, 5 minutes away in the other direction, are a centre for tree climbing, zip wiring, openwater swimming, waterskiing and wakeboarding – and there is a lakeside restaurant with live music in the summer.
The local area is popular for horse riding, with a riding school at the bottom of the track and canyoning, bungee jumping and even parascending are all possible locally. For those in need of restoration and therapy, the newly restored thermal baths of Le Boulou are nearby and for those who just love to sit and observe, the birdlife is plentiful and varied (it is not uncommon to spot eagles from the garden). In winter, the popular ski resorts of Les Angles, Font Romeu and Formigueres are under two hours’ drive away and it is perfectly possible to head up into the mountains for a day’s skiing and be home in time for supper. There are several golf courses in the area – some with magnificent views. Enthusiasts can choose between coastal or mountain courses in France or over the border just inside Spain. The region offers some incredible cycling – both on and off road. There is a new cycle route that goes from the bottom of the track all the way to the coast and in the other direction the foothills of the Pyrenees offer incredible training routes, hilly with wonderful views and great roads, often empty. The bustling university city of Girona is only 50 minutes drive over the border and they run a guided shop ride (good quality carbon bikes available to hire) every Thursday morning year round.
