About the property

3 bedroom character cottage in idyllic Cotswold village

Walnut Cottage is a Grade II listed character cottage dating from 1642 with a bright, airy addition built in 2002. So it is a combination of the old and the new: antique furniture, ancient beams, and all modern conveniences. The ground floor, which has underfloor heating throughout, comprises an entrance hall for coats and wellies, a large, airy kitchen/dining room, a study, lavatory, laundry room with new appliances, and a spacious beamed living room with open fire.

On the first floor there are two cosy bedrooms: one with twin beds and one with a double bed. There is also a large family bathroom. In the loft there is a spacious, comfortable en suite master bedroom with views over the countryside. All towels and linens are provided.

The house has a large garden mostly set to lawn where you can relax in the sun or play outdoor table tennis. There is off-road parking in the private driveway. Off the kitchen through French doors is a lovely terrace with climbing roses and shrubs, a pergola with table and chairs for al fresco dining, bistro tables, and a Weber BBQ.

About Bill & Barbara Cheesman

Hi, my name is Jonathan Cheesman and this is my house. I was born in Boston, Massachusetts and lived in Newburyport until I was five years old. We then moved to Bath in the southwest of England where I attended Kingswood School. I graduated from Bristol University in 2003 and lived and worked in London until recently when I was reassigned to New York for the next year or so. While I'm away, I'll be renting Walnut Cottage as a holiday let whenever I'm unable to be there. The photo is of my dad because he and my mum will be your contacts.

My parents, Bill and Barbara Cheesman, are semi-retired and teach English in Oxford part-time. They will manage the house letting for me and look after our guests to make sure that all of their needs are met and that they have a great holiday.

Bill & Barbara Cheesman purchased this cottage in 2011

Although located within a mile of the A40, Asthall feels a million miles away. Whether you come for a short break to unwind from the stress of city life or for a longer stay to explore this lovely area, Asthall is ideal. If you are travelling from London, it can be reached in less than 90 minutes (assuming you avoid rush hour....).This ancient village is nestled beside the lovely Windrush River in peaceful, unspoilt countryside. Perhaps it is best known for its association the Mitford sisters who lived for several years in Asthall Manor, an exquisite Jacobean Manor House which is situated next to the 12th century Church of St Nicholas. There is also a quiet, friendly village pub, The Maytime Inn, which has been completely refurbished by its new owners. Pop over for breakfast, a pint of real ale in the sun, or even a game of petanque! Within easy walking distance is the village of Swinbrook with its excellent pub, The Swan Inn, where David Cameron entertained Francois Hollande. Daylesford Organic Farmshop and its fine pub The Wild Rabbit are approximately 13 miles away. Other highly recommended nearby pubs are The Lamb Inn in Burford, The Wheatsheaf in Northleach, The Fox in Lower Oddington, and The Feathered Nest in Nether Westcote. Asthall is located just three miles from the beautiful town of Burford, known as the Gateway to the Cotswolds, so it is a perfect base for exploring this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Also, the city of Oxford, with its world famous university and museums, is within easy reach. There are many other attractions in the area such as Chastleton House and Hidcote Manor Garden (both National Trust properties), Blenheim Palace (a World Heritage Site), the Corinium Museum and the Cotswold Wildlife Park for the children. However, many visitors come just to walk or cycle in nature and explore the tranquil countryside and idyllic villages.

Great character cottage

  • 4 of 5

We have just returned from a three week stay at this lovely cottage. The pictures are true to how it looks. Everything was neat and clean and the cottage had wonderful character. It was well appointed and Bill and Barbara were lovely to deal with. There was a cleaning company that came in once a week and supplied clean linens. While the beds were very comfortable and the washrooms were lovely, the furniture in the living room, although antiques....was not very comfortable. Other than that, the cottage was very comfortable.

The pub across the road was also lovely. Good food...nice staff.

We tried doing days trips from the cottage as we wanted a home base. I think two weeks would probably have been enough or one week at a time in different locations. That being said, it was a very peaceful, tranquil holiday. The country side was beautiful and lots of history in the area.

If you are looking for a quiet get away, this cottage is very welcoming and comfortable.

Lovely holiday.

Immaculate Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Walnut cottage was a great place to spend our time in the Cotswolds. The location was perfect to see the whole Cotswold area and more.

We walked the footpaths, drove through the beautiful villages and even made day trips to London and Windsor since they were close enough to enjoy in one day.

We recommend Walnut Cottage to anyone who loves a clean place to stay, well equipped with everything you need and a location that is perfect in every way.

Bill and Barbara, the owners, were wonderful. Walnut Cottage deserves more than 5 stars!!

A rare find!

  • 5 of 5

We feel so lucky to have spent one week at Walnut Cottage. It has been one of the loveliest holiday homes that we have stayed in.

It is a delightful cottage, tastefully appointed, full of period charm. It was spotless!

No expense has been spared by the owners to ensure that all guests enjoy a comfortable stay. Comfortable beds, luxurious cotton bedding and towels, expensive facial wipes, organic teas - to name but a few touches.

The garden is a great size and immaculately maintained. We enjoyed playing table tennis on the lawn.

Bill and Barbara were exceptionally helpful. By email, they recommended many places for us to visit.

We returned home refreshed, having had a great taste of the Cotswolds. I will be recommending Walnut Cottage to my friends and family!

10 out of 10.

Truly a wonderful cottage, a real charmer

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of six, ranging from a toddler to a pensioner, we stayed for ten days in this truly quintessential cottage. Elegantly furnished with all the necessary amenities without loosing it's old world charm. A perfect retreat set in a beautiful landscape in the enchanting Cotswolds. The owners Bill and Barbara were extremely helpful and charming in every way, making sure that our stay was comfortable and highly enjoyable. We highly recommend this one, and yes we would stay there again, in a heartbeat. Earl and the clan.

The Cotswolds by foot, bike, car & bus.

  • 5 of 5

Walnut Cottage was a great base for our family of 4 to explore Oxford and the Cotswolds for our 2 weeks in the area. The Cottage is lovely, well-appointed and had everything we needed to prepare meals, with shops a short car trip away. When we weren't off somewhere, there was plenty of at-home recreation (table tennis on the lawn was popular). In two weeks we barely scratched the surface of all the footpaths, cycling loops (TY Cycle delivered rental bikes to our door) and myriad sights all a short drive away. We will fondly remember this beautiful spot and our breakfasts in the garden, surrounded by birdsong.

Beautiful Cottage and Gardens

  • 5 of 5

Walnut Cottage is a very special place. We enjoyed absolutely everything about it.

The cottage is immaculate and well maintained on the inside, and the outside. The beds are very comfortable, and made up with high quality linens. The bathrooms are stocked with plush towels and great storage room.

The kitchen is stocked with everything one might need for cooking, and is especially lovely with French doors looking out to the garden patio. The living room is large and comfortable; the perfect place to read or relax.

You can eat inside or outside, depending on the weather.

There is a great pub steps away, and many other dining options close by.

The cottage is stocked with a wealth of information about nearby sites and attractions, and even some maps. Bill and Barbara also gave us wonderful suggestions for restaurants and shopping.

We were greeted with beautiful flowers from the garden on our arrival. Every detail has been thought of to ensure a comfortable, enjoyable and carefree holiday. We couldn't have asked for anything more.
