About the property

3 bedroom character cottage in idyllic Cotswold village

Walnut Cottage is a Grade II listed character cottage dating from 1642 with a bright, airy addition built in 2002. So it is a combination of the old and the new: antique furniture, ancient beams, and all modern conveniences. The ground floor, which has underfloor heating throughout, comprises an entrance hall for coats and wellies, a large, airy kitchen/dining room, a study, lavatory, laundry room with new appliances, and a spacious beamed living room with open fire.

On the first floor there are two cosy bedrooms: one with twin beds and one with a double bed. There is also a large family bathroom. In the loft there is a spacious, comfortable en suite master bedroom with views over the countryside. All towels and linens are provided.

The house has a large garden mostly set to lawn where you can relax in the sun or play outdoor table tennis. There is off-road parking in the private driveway. Off the kitchen through French doors is a lovely terrace with climbing roses and shrubs, a pergola with table and chairs for al fresco dining, bistro tables, and a Weber BBQ.

About Bill & Barbara Cheesman

Hi, my name is Jonathan Cheesman and this is my house. I was born in Boston, Massachusetts and lived in Newburyport until I was five years old. We then moved to Bath in the southwest of England where I attended Kingswood School. I graduated from Bristol University in 2003 and lived and worked in London until recently when I was reassigned to New York for the next year or so. While I'm away, I'll be renting Walnut Cottage as a holiday let whenever I'm unable to be there. The photo is of my dad because he and my mum will be your contacts.

My parents, Bill and Barbara Cheesman, are semi-retired and teach English in Oxford part-time. They will manage the house letting for me and look after our guests to make sure that all of their needs are met and that they have a great holiday.

Bill & Barbara Cheesman purchased this cottage in 2011

A Cotswold Christmas....

  • 5 of 5

We rented Walnut Cottage for 6 nights over Christmas. This is the very best accommodation that I have ever rented on VRBO. The photos actullally don't do it justice. It is a large property which accommdated 5 adults comfortably. It was spotlessly clean and really had everything that you needed and more. My sister and I managed to cook a wonderful family Christmas dinner in the beautiful well equipped kitchen. Bill and Barbara were great hosts and were available to help if needed at any time. I would recommend that anyone looking for a break in the Cotswold countryside should definitely put Walnut Cottage on the top of their list.

Great house!

We have stayed at numerous Home Away vacation rentals both in Europe and the U.S. and this is by a good bit the best accommodations we have ever stayed at. Clean, comfortable, and spacious. I highly recommend it.

Walnut Cottage was even prettier in person. Exceeded my expectations!

  • 5 of 5

The home was lovely with everything provided that you need for a wonderful stay. The patio and garden are very beautiful and make for a lovely spot to eat or have a glass of wine outside while listening to the birds. The location in Asthall which is a lovely small village is so close to everything and just a few steps away from a very nice pub the Maytime Inn. Bill and Barbara were wonderful hosts and made sure we had what we needed. Make sure to look at the book they put together with information on the area... Highly recommend a stay at Walnut Cottage!

One of the nicest properties we have ever visited.

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful centuries-old stone cottage with all the modern conveniences. The kitchen is especially nice - with everything done to a very high standard. A nice dual-fuel stove, upscale dinnerware, silverware, cookware, glassware. Great location near Burford - one of the most beautiful locations in the Cotswolds. Good restaurants very nearby. The owners were very helpful and provided great advice. From the cottage we made easy day trips to Stonehenge, Bath, Oxford, Burford, etc. We would definitely stay here again.

Absolutely beautiful

  • 5 of 5

What can we say? The cottage, located in idyllic Asthall village, is everything that is advertised and much, much more. The garden, the decor, the distinctive lighting, the books, the well appointed kitchen, and all the auxiliary amenities are simply irresistible. It is just steps away from a very nice pub and within walking distance to the Swan Inn in nearby Swinbrook. My wife and I visited the cottage in spring when the daffodils were blooming and the weather was sunny and cool, just the way we like it. It only rained slightly one day, but that made it absolutely ideal for curling up with a mystery. The cottage is perfectly located as a gateway for visiting the historic Cotswold historic villages and we had the time to visit most of the major ones over a ten day period. There are walking trails and public footpaths everywhere and we took full advantage of them.

Bill and Barbara were perfect hosts and answered any question we had prior to and during the stay. They also provided the use of maps of the Cotswold area, listings of really nice local restaurants, and directions to a variety of nearby walking trails.

The cottage truly is an amazing place, located in a quietly perfect slice of heaven, and we heartily recommend it.

Although located within a mile of the A40, Asthall feels a million miles away. Whether you come for a short break to unwind from the stress of city life or for a longer stay to explore this lovely area, Asthall is ideal. If you are travelling from London, it can be reached in less than 90 minutes (assuming you avoid rush hour....).This ancient village is nestled beside the lovely Windrush River in peaceful, unspoilt countryside. Perhaps it is best known for its association the Mitford sisters who lived for several years in Asthall Manor, an exquisite Jacobean Manor House which is situated next to the 12th century Church of St Nicholas. There is also a quiet, friendly village pub, The Maytime Inn, which has been completely refurbished by its new owners. Pop over for breakfast, a pint of real ale in the sun, or even a game of petanque! Within easy walking distance is the village of Swinbrook with its excellent pub, The Swan Inn, where David Cameron entertained Francois Hollande. Daylesford Organic Farmshop and its fine pub The Wild Rabbit are approximately 13 miles away. Other highly recommended nearby pubs are The Lamb Inn in Burford, The Wheatsheaf in Northleach, The Fox in Lower Oddington, and The Feathered Nest in Nether Westcote. Asthall is located just three miles from the beautiful town of Burford, known as the Gateway to the Cotswolds, so it is a perfect base for exploring this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Also, the city of Oxford, with its world famous university and museums, is within easy reach. There are many other attractions in the area such as Chastleton House and Hidcote Manor Garden (both National Trust properties), Blenheim Palace (a World Heritage Site), the Corinium Museum and the Cotswold Wildlife Park for the children. However, many visitors come just to walk or cycle in nature and explore the tranquil countryside and idyllic villages.
