About David Blum

We enjoyed coming up to the mountains from Atlanta for years before finding this wonderful house. We liked the area so much that we retired here and built a new home just up the road from this house. We now rent out this original house.

My wife and I usually book a room at one of several nice Highlands inns for around $150-200 per night. This time our favorites were all booked. So I pulled up VRBO and the first thing I saw was David and Nancy's rental home. What a deal! We could rent an entire house for not much more than we usually pay for a single room. We hopped on it right away and weren't the least bit disappointed. The house is about a mile off Highlands Road on Scaly Mountain, which is how you get the lovely mountain view from the large back porch. The nearest house is David and Nancy's personal home a short walk up the road. You're about equidistant from Highlands, Clayton, and Franklin. David's comprehensive "house notes" tell you about the best attractions, shopping, and dining in each direction. Don't miss the large, quality collection of American Handcrafts at nearby "Peak Experience." Several beautiful hikes begin at your door.

The house and grounds were in excellent condition. The interior was spotless. The downstairs is an open floor-plan, except for the master bedroom and bath, with a back porch stretching the length of the house. The kitchen has top tier appliances and plenty of room to work in. There's a gas fireplace across from the comfy sofa in the great room, where you can watch the huge flatscreen TV. Excellent reception. Large dining table with mountain view. Upstairs there's a room with 2 beds (Queens I believe) and a full bath. Wi-Fi works fine. Text messages are no problem, but our cell phone signal was too weak for calls. No worry -- the Blums let you use the house landline. BTW, I called David with a question and he went out of his way to find the answer. From first to last he was easy to work with.

The king bed in the master bedroom has a fine mattress -- not too firm, not too soft. Opposite the bed is a picture window with a view of the woods. There are 2 sinks in the master bath, along with a separate shower, bidet, and jetted tub. A washer and dryer are nearby.

Believe every good word you read in these reviews about Bella's Junction Cafe less than 10 minutes from the house. Killer Portobello mushroom sandwiches for lunch one day and a filet mignon dinner the next night that was practically as good as the one I'd paid twice as much for the night before at Wolfgang's. Don't let the look put you off. Give Bella's a try and save room for dessert. My guess is you'll make a return visit for seconds!

An A+ experience in every way.

Wonderful Mountain House

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 needed a break from the SC heat and we were lucky enough to find this house. It is not too far from the Highlands but far enough away to feel secluded. Highland Gap is a wonderful subdivision and all you need to do is walk out of the front door and you are walking in the woods. We walked every day in the sub division. The house has a wonderful porch and a very nice kitchen and master bedroom. My daughters shared the upstairs bedroom and my son slept in the front den's fold out bed.

Perfect Mountain Home

  • 5 of 5

We scheduled a last minute getaway to the mountains I grew up visiting as a child. We wanted to give our 3 boys the same mountain experience. Though we weren't in the home much during the day, we enjoyed mornings and evenings in this cozy home nestled in the mountain side with a beautiful view of the mountains in the distance off of the nice deep back porch! The set up was perfect for our family. Our two younger boys took the bedroom with the two beds and our older son slept in the front sitting room. Each of those spaces had their own bathrooms. The master bedroom was spacious and has lovely window views of the lush woods surrounding the home. The kitchen was adequate for our needs. The living area had a large tv, but we only turned it on once for a few minutes. The views drew us outside. And when it was dark, we enjoyed the large family style table for games. We spent our days in either Highlands, Cashiers, Scaly Mountain, or up north whitewater rafting. We highly recommend this VRBO to anybody.

T&C

  • 5 of 5

What a great location, peaceful and scenic up on Scaly Mountain, cabin was great, all the conveniences of home. Wake-up in the master suite to a large picture window of the dappled sun coming down through the trees. Beautiful mountain drives to the Highlands and Cashiers. Thank you T&C

Loved this cabin!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 8 glorious days and loved every minute! The weather could not have been more perfect! Loved the view and the seclusion! Only 2 things of note: 1) The TV picture was so dark we could hardly watch it. I did tell David but it was towards the end of our visit and he said he would have taken care of it if he had known sooner. 2) I might be mistaken but I thought checkout was 11am. A little before 10 the housekeeper showed up and sat in the driveway waiting for us to leave. I felt rushed and couldn't enjoy the last little bit of time we had there. I really didn't want to leave at all!! lol We visit each October and will check back to see if it's available to rent next year!

Escape from Florida heat

  • 4 of 5

This is a lovely home in a very secluded location. My husband and I spent 4 weeks there and were visited by family and friends. The location is convenient to Highlands and to many activities and beautiful scenery. The large deck on the back was my favorite spot. Loved the hummingbirds (we got a feeder for them) and the little bunny that visited the back yard in the early evening. Unfortunately, the trees have grown up since the pictures you see here were taken, and you really can't see the mountains unless you are standing. The unlimited long distance phone service is a huge plus as there is only enough of a Verizon signal to text. We did not find the home to be as well equipped as others indicated. While the kitchen has upscale appliances, the things in the cabinets and drawers were disappointing. There is no ice maker and only one functional ice tray. Trying to cook for 4 adults and 3 kids was a challenge at times. The master suite is very spacious and comfortable, however the linens and pillows could stand to be updated. Be sure to bring hangers, soap, and a bedside clock if you want to have these items available. The second bedroom and bath upstairs was fine for kids, but not so much for another couple. The bathroom lacks a decent mirror and storage. The heat and AC are not vented to this room so the door needs to remain open for air circulation. There is only one TV, but there are additional connections in the "TV room" and the master bedroom. The owner did provide us with another cable box for an additional TV that we supplied. Because David is close by, he was able to respond quickly when we need help figuring out how everything worked. (BTW, gas is piped directly to the outdoor grill so no canister is needed!) This house is on the market; wish we could buy it!

Owner's Response: While we appreciate the mostly very positive review we are disappointed that it's the first one we have ever gotten out of the 38 we have so far that wasn't five stars. As far as the supplies in the kitchen she told us there would be two of them and we advertise it as a maximum of 6 guests so it is not intended to be outfitted for the 7 people she had there for a few days. There is an ice maker in the Subzero Freezer so don't know why she said there was not one. As for the trees blocking the view, I had a couple of guys with chainsaws out there the day after she mentioned this to me to cut down all the trees they could reach. After it was done she said they were the main ones and she could see the mountains fine even when sitting at the table. The rest will be cut down this winter when the underbrush clears out and they can be reached. The other little things she mentioned like soap, hangers and a bedside clock would have been taken care of immediately as I did these other concerns had she mentioned them to me. In any event, I hardly think they merit less than five stars. I don't know what else I could have done for her, even brought her an extra satellite box and paid a couple of hundred dollars to get it hooked up even though in five years of renting no one else has asked for another TV in addition to the big screen HDTV we already have with premium channels. We take great pride in addressing all concerns immediately and making everyone's stay as perfect as possible and it is disheartening to do all we did towards this end for this guest and still have her leave a less than perfect rating.
