Enjoying lunch with friends on our covered terrace. Fell in love with Costa Rica in 2000 and HAD to own property.
Leila purchased this house in 2006
Habitat Magico offered both the view and privacy from Coco Beach. The reason for Coco was because it has everything compared to other neighboring beach towns of Hermosa or Ocotal. It has so many restaurants and grocery stores which was important! Now a boardwalk, excellent night life, banks, outdoor markets and shops, fitness center and classes, numerous massage therapists etc. Coco Beach has a pulse and everything is walking distance.
My girlfriend and I visited CR in Jan '09. It was a perfect trip, teary-eyed on our return ride back to the airport. Of the MANY highlights of the vacation, HABITAT MAGICO, no doubt, was chief among them. Can't express how relieved we were to walk into the house for the first time after a LONG day of travel and see how luxurious and clean it was. Can't express, either, how nice it was to return there after daily adventures to an immaculate bathroom, jacuzzi, living room, roof deck w/ sunsets, and finally, a comfortable bed. This will read like it was written by the owner... trust it's just written by a guy who wishes he was still on vacation... Neighborhood was quiet (very important). Safe. Views were unbeatable. The owner was more than accommodating and a pleasure to deal with. So much so, to write this review is a moral obligation to her. The property manager, Gina, also was an over-the-top pleasure to deal with. If you stay at the house BOOK YOUR CAR RENTAL THROUGH HER and not at one of the overpriced agencies!!! All in all, if I return to Costa Rica and stay in Guanacoste, I wouldn't remotely dream of staying anywhere else but Magico. The way that people take pictures of their rental properties with such creative photographic manipulation, you drive around Costa Rica and say to yourself, "We could have been staying at that dingy shack for all we knew." NOT the case here. I have better pictures of the property, in fact, than you see on this site - and will probably forward them to the owner. It's hard to write so complimentary about it and feel like you're being honest, but it really is true. Renting a house on vacation could be a nightmare. This was the exact opposite.
I booked this place with my husband at the very last minute, two days before our arrival! Not only was Leila super accommodating getting us in there so quickly but she did everything to get us a rental car on a Sunday when everything is normally closed. We traveled to every beach up and down the coast, as far down as Nosara. The roads are pretty rough so I would suggest an suv. Also, for an extra $1 a day I would suggest getting the portable wifi from the rental car place instead of the gps. Download the free app called Waze on your phone. This is not only a better navigating system than the gps, but you also have the ability to use your phone anywhere!
The house is immaculate. It had everything we needed to make our stay pleasant and comfortable. The cool plunge pool/jacuzzi was great to cool off after a fun day out in the sun and there was also a huge oversized bath tub downstairs for those nights we wanted to soak together to warm up!
We felt super safe during our stay at this quiet villa. Roger was wonderful and super helpful with anything we needed. His smiling face was there every morning to check in. He provided a lot of laughs helping teach my husband Spanish!
The house was conveniently located near a supermarket so we could grab things to have at the house whenever we needed. We would have coffee and walk on the beach every morning right there in Coco. Then we'd jet off to check out all local beaches. Playa Flamingo had beautiful white sand beaches and great food at Coco Loco. Playa Conchal also had gorgeous white sand beaches but beware you must have 4 wheel drive to get to this beach, as you are driving on sand! Every night we saw one amazing sunset after another and we would plan accordingly every day to make sure we were somewhere different at sunset. Father Rooster in Playa Octal was great for dinner. Also, Aqua Sport in Playa Hermosa was stunning at sunset. Surfing was great in Tamarindo and the city was fun and busy. We had a great day surfing at Playa Avallenas as well, and visiting Lola's right on the beach there and meeting Lolita, the pig that lives there, is a must!
We also went zip lining superman style at Diamanté Adventure Park near Hotel Riu. What a crazy adventure! We did some kayaking there as well. Costa Rica has so much to offer and we can wait to get back to experience more of this beautiful country. Huge thanks to Leila and crew for making it an unbelievably memorable trip!
My wife and I had the extreme pleasure of staying at Habitat Magico to two full months in 2016. We moved from L.A. to Costa Rica on August 1, and we could not have found a warmer or more wonderful "home" in our new country then Habitat Magico in Playas del Coco.
The owners, Leila and Jouko, were the most caring, attentive, and convivial hosts we have ever encountered. We have rented many houses in Costa Rica over the years before moving here, and we have always had good fortune with the respective owners. But Leila and Jouko are, without qualification, the most extraordinary hosts ever! The most trivial question was always answered by Leila within an hour. And, throughout our tenure, she was always suggesting additional tidbits--like where to get homemade lemon pie in Coco!
The property manager, Nuria, was equally warm and attentive at all times, even introducing us to her tennis club. Roger, who takes care of the grounds, was a continual source of help and information--from finding our wayward mail to sharing local celebrations with his gorgeous little daughter.
Coco itself is an excellent base for those new to Costa Rica. There is an "AutoMercado" grocery store (when you are dying for JIF Super Crunch peanut butter). An excellent little shop has real Italian gelato for hot days. And, not to be missed, there is The Lookout café just up the hill from Habitat Magico (best tuno nachos in the world, and lots of craft beer). Coco is big enough to have everything you might need, but smaller and less frenetic than Tamarindo. And the Liberia airport is only 30 minutes away (much preferred over SJO airport).
Best of all, though, is Habitat Magico itself; all imaginable comforts are at your fingertips. Downstairs there is a very private jungle patio and refreshing spa, and upstairs there are endless vistas of Coco beach and beyond. This is not just another rental house, it is a "home" for as long as you can stay--thanks to Leila and Jouko!
OMG. We are loving it here and if we didn't have a child in a wheelchair we'd buy it, it is the perfect home and location! :) The driveway is a crazy challenge but only took 3 times to perfect our entrance!.
There's not a thing missing from the kitchen to complete your meals if you are not eating out. The beds are comfortable the wildlife is beautiful.
We will be back. The photos don't even show how beautiful it is here. The property was immaculate and well maintained. We would recommend this to anyone who loves a clean home and respects the place as they would their own. Off to local beaches, cheap but delicious restaurants, tropical 80's weather and clear skies every day. Nuria, the property manager went above and beyond our expectations.
We had a little unexpected emergency and Nuria was so accommodating and helped us out at the drop of a hat. YOU must use her car rental place - Adobe - Nelson or you will get screwed by other car companies! go for 4x4 if you can to get up driveway easier.
Can't wait to start planning our next trip to CR and we will use Habitat as our home away from home! Thank you Leila for your support!
We spent a week at this home in early February 2015. It was absolutely beautiful. The setting was very private, yet close to activities. Stunning ocean view, quite cluster of houses, well equipped, professionally maintained. We found the owner and the property manager both very accessible and very helpful. We routinely use VRBO and found this home to be among the best so far.
The driveway is crazy. After 7 days I must say it never got easier!! We used our SUV most of the time. While others report that they walked to town, we found the distance a little far. We walked a lot around the hillside roads near the home and through the town and beach, but always took our car downtown when that was our destination.
High quality TV and sound system. Throw an HDMI cable and a 1/8th to 1/8th cord in your suitcase so you can tie your laptop to the tv and your music library to the sound system.
Payment process was unusual and initially a little uncomfortable. The owner does not use PayPal. She requested a check for about 33% be sent by mail to her house in Ontario, Canada. That created a little yellow flag. . . .but ok. NO biggie. We are Canadian too, and discovered that we live within a 100 miles of each other. Then, upon arrival at a designated meeting point (parking lot in a strip mall) we were instructed to give the remaining 66% to the property manager in. . . .wait for it. . . CASH. WOW!! I talked to the owner about my concern. She assured me that this had always been their method, and there had never been an issue. Nobody else had mentioned this in their reviews. We reluctantly proceeded as requested. Everything was fine.
We would definitely rent this home again.
We stayed here for a number of nights with a small child (6 yrs) and a grandparent. We cooked in-house, mostly ourselves and we also through the owner and her manager, a local chef who made some of our meals (fantastic!). We have rented probably 15-20 houses in our travels, and this one one of the best equipped - kitchen, comforts of home (but not extravagantly so), convenient set-up. The owner's communication was fabulous, and that's again a hallmark of this entire experience. The location was a mile from the Automercado, you don't even need a car to get there. The beach 1.5 miles away. We spent some time away from the house - going up to Rincon de la Vieja, Borinquen and Palo Verde. All of them within striking distance of Coco. One of the things we appreciated the most was the peace and quiet of this place...very near to nightlife if you wish it, but far enough away to be able to sit in peace, read a book or just sit on the deck (enjoying the sounds and sight of lovely Costa Rica). This place has good vibrations...it feels like home from the very first moment. We loved feeding the black cat and white dog, who came by. Thank you owners. (Oh, and please: tip kindly: the gardener, the maid, the manager, and the nightwatchman. It is expected (or at the least hoped for) by folks whose income is very different than ours. If you cannot afford to tip, then don't travel.)
Coco Beach (Playa del Coco) is a growing town with all major conveniences right at your finger tips - numerous restaurants, bars, cafes and nightlife. There is a modern supermarket - Auto Mercado - open 7 days a week for all your household needs plus a bank, ATM, 4 pharmacies, craft markets, small retail shops, salon, Internet cafes & sports outfitters. Coco Beach is one of the longest beaches in the area with a soft sandy shoreline and warm Pacific waters.
A car is important so that you can experience all the adventure activities in the region - canopy tours (zip line), jungle & volcano tours, snorkel & sunset sails, horseback riding, deep sea fishing, wind surfing, eco boat tours, whitewater rafting, hiking, biking, multiple beaches up and down the coast and much more...something for everyone!
