There are places that enchant a visitor and Aegina island is such a place, which us why so many wanderers end up staying on the island for years or even their entire lives. Painters and iconographers, sculptors, musicians and writers, many of them among the greatest name of modern Greek culture, have been part of the island's character for decades now.
Aegina's hospitable climate and uniquely clear light has given rise to the famous Aegina pistachio, which was first cultivated on the island in the 1920s - it is now registered as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) product, thanks to its unique flavor. It owes its character to Aegina's hot, dry climate, proximity to the sea and the lime-rich soil of the island. Do not miss the pistachio (Fistiki) festival each September!
Aegina's known history dates thousands of years back, as evidenced by the major monuments, such as the prehistoric Kolona, the Temple of Aphaia and medieval churches. The island continues to impress to date - welcoming people, tavernas with traditional cuisine, narrow paved lanes, elegant neoclassical homes and tasteful shops.
It is worth noting that the world-famous writer, Nikos Kazantzakis, stayed in Aegina until 1946, rarely leaving the island to travel around the world. His house in Livadi area, overlooking the sea, still stands as a heritage to island's rich culture.
The Temple of Aphaia, rising on the hill above Aghia Marina, was an important symbolic centre of ancient Greece. The temple itself, is a fine example of ancient Greek architecture and constitutes part of The Golden Triangle, as it is built at an equal distance for the Parthenon in Athens and the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio, to form an equilateral triangle!
The island of Aegina is uniquely positioned in the Saronic gulf, just opposite Athens and surrounded by the beautiful islands of Agkistri, Poros and Hydra, creating an exciting portfolio of day-trips.
