Overview

Croghan House Rental Photos and Description

Gorgeous lakefront home sleeps 8 -10, private beach, boats, Directv, game room

Our lakefront home, with our own beach, is a luxurious Adirondack Lodge situated on seven very private acres. We supply everything you need for a great vacation. Our lakefront features a beautiful sandy beach, a dock, fishing boat, a canoe, and a kayak. We have nature trails throughout the property. You will enjoy the beauty of our peaceful lake. Take a boat out fishing, or just explore the many coves and beaches. We have outdoor grills, a big outdoor fire pit, and plenty of firewood. The Great Room features a beautiful stone fireplace, leather furniture, Sirius Satellite Radio, DirectTV, and DVD or VHS movies. Our new game room has a Pool Table, a Foosball Table, Electronic Dart Game, and a card table. Our kitchen features stainless steel appliances, all the conveniences of home, and a large dining table that overlooks the lake. The bedrooms and baths are well appointed and very clean, and we supply clean linens at no charge. The second floor has a fantastic view of the lake, and an outside balcony. You'll see plenty of wildlife including deer, eagles, loons, and more!

Shopping/supplies: The village of Croghan is 7 miles away and offers a Nice n Easy Grocery Shoppe that has food, camping supplies, gas, propane, souvenirs, etc. There is also Monnats IGA, a full line grocery store. The Croghan Meat Market is famous for Croghan Bologna and also offers great steaks, lobster tails, etc. Vinny's Pizza is on Main Street as well as Schultz's Restaurant. Good ol' Wishy's is a local legend, a real old fashioned ice cream parlor. The Beaver River flows through town and at one time powered the Croghan Island Mill which is still an operating lumber mill. There's a nice park in town with a playground, tennis court, ball diamonds, etc. Croghan is famous for Maple Syrup and is home of the American Maple Museum on Main Street. The Northern New York Railroad Museum is also on Main Street as is Stumps Laundramat, a Liquor Store, and Video Rental, Monnat - Nortz Mobil is a full service gas station on Main Street. Buckingham Hardware on Main is also an Outdoor Sports Store.

Effley Falls Reservoir: Effley Falls Reservoir is part of the Beaver River Canoe Route. The Beaver River flows into the east end of the lake. We sometimes beach the boats there and slide down the waterfalls, or venture upstream to explore the river and the surrounding remote forest. The lake has some great beaches and coves to explore. Most of the shoreline is undeveloped. We love the peace and quiet, even on holiday weekends, There are no public boat launches on the lake so access is restricted to those who own property, or those who canoe or kayak the Beaver River Canoe Route. Aside from our own private beach, there are three other really nice sandy beaches, one on the east end accessible only by water, one on the west end, and our favorite is on the North Shore which is also only accessible by water.

The Property: Our Lodge was newly constructed in 2006. All furniture and fixtures were purchased new, and expressly to provide a comfortable and relaxing environment. Our property is over 7 acres in size, and bordered by water on two sides. Our beach and dock area is great for swimming, fishing, boating, digging in the sand, or just relaxing. We also have marked hiking trails along the water's edge, and also a trail to the highest point of a ridge on the property that offers a long range view across the lake and forests beyond, We have a great outdoor fire-pit overlooking the lake and plenty of firewood on hand. Most of the property is wooded, but there are two nicely maintained lawns, one behind the lodge, and one overlooking the beach. Play ball, or just relax in a lawn chair. Our huge front porch has mahogany flooring and overlooks the lake. It's a great shady and cool spot to relax on a hot summer's day. Included are two fishing boats (we supply the gas), a 17 foot canoe, and a 14 foot kayak.

Total Relaxation

  • 5 of 5

This home is gorgeous! Words cannot describe the beauty of the lodge and the property. If you are looking for a place to relax and make the "outside world" disappear, this is the place for you!

Gary, the owner, is very friendly, accomodating, and he knows the area well. He is very helpful. He takes pride in his house and land, and it shows through with all of the amenities he offers.

Also, don't let the 7 mile drive to town bother you. Very few cars on the road, extremely quick ride, and plenty of parking in town. All of the shopowners and workers were very nice and proud of their town.

A little gem off the beaten path!

  • 5 of 5

What a great vacation! My family of 6 needed to disconnect from our busy day to day and this home was perfect. The house was cozy and clean and the view could not be beat! Hiking, swimming, fishing, exploring or just relaxing, this is the place to go. Although we only met Gary when we arrived, he and his daughter were very nice and showed us around the place (in the rain) and made sure to answer any of our questions. Thank you for sharing your home with us and we hope you and your guests enjoy the float we left behind. All the best!

The Perfect Getaway!

  • 4 of 5

If you are looking for someplace to get away from it all, this is it! I have never had such a relaxing vacation. There is no wifi, or reception of any kind, so I did not have to feel guilty about not checking on things while I was here. (Although if you really need it, you can go up the hill a short drive and you will be able to use your phone). The owner is very nice and accommodating, a pleasure to work with. He was unable to meet us on arrival, but made sure he had a friend waiting at the house to greet us when we got there. He showed us around the property, showed us how to use the boats, and gave us a rundown on anything/everything we possibly needed to know. The house and property were immaculately kept. The entire house was very clean and well kept (and I am a harsh critic when it comes to this). The kitchen has everything you need to cook a full meal. We were 2 families of 7 people total and we cooked every night. If you forget anything, it is only about 7 miles or so into town. While we were expecting to have a washer/dryer while there, the dryer was not functional, had I known this, I would have packed a few more outfits. Not a huge deal as there is a clothes line out back where we hung our clothes to dry. The view can't be beat. There is a nice porch to read and relax and just soak up the view and sounds of nature. There were 2 motor boats, a canoe and a kayak for our use. The gas was even supplied for us. We went out fishing at sunrise every morning while there was still a fog on the water. This I must say was my favorite part. It was the most peaceful place I have ever been. That being said, it is also the time the fish are biting! We also thought there would be fishing gear for our use, and this was not the case. Again, this was no big deal as we were such a large group we brought some of our own. The guys did make a run to the Wal-Mart, that was about 1/2 hour away and picked up another pole or 2. We even had bait that was supplied by the owner waiting for us on the porch. Not wanting to repeat too much of what others have said in their reviews I will end here. If you read all the reviews, you will know everything you need to know.

I would recommend this place without hesitation!

Away from it all!

  • 4 of 5

Cabin is all we wished for! Away from everything yet cozy and comfortable. All amenities for comfort including fireplace. Kitchen well stocked and comfy beds. There is, however, no Internet or cell service unless you venture about 3 minutes away by car to the top of the ridge. Not a bad inconvenience but one to consider. View was awesome and serene. Definitely will visit again! Gary was great to interact with and was inviting. Comfortable accommodations!

Such a great first visit to New York!!

  • 4 of 5

The cabin is just as it shows in the pictures, BEAUTIFUL! My family of four (my hsuband and myself and kids aged 14 and 18) traveled from Ohio for some peace and quiet, and boy did we get it. No noise, only the sound of the birds chirping and the wind. My husband and son really enjoyed the fishing and the lake, while my daughter and I enjoyed the peace and quiet and caught up on some reading and napping! The lake is so beautiful. We also visited the little towns of Croghan and Lowville and enjoyed that as well. My husband and I stopped at Tug Hill Vineyard, which is a must see. Beautiful vineyards on top of a hill, with a spectacular view of the rolling hills and farms and brought some great wine home with us. Goode's Amish market was nice with very friendly folks - got some great lettuce and tomatoes there. We enjoyed ice cream a couple of times at Good Ole' Wishy's and took lots of pictures at the Croghan Lumber Mill. It was such a great trip that we will always remember! I was a little nervous at first not having any phone service or internet there at the cabin, especially when we got a monster of a thunderstorm and we lost our satellite service for awhile, but it was only about 5-10 minutes up the road where we could connect with our 4G phones. Gary met us at the cabin and explained everything and was so nice. The cabin had everything we needed and more. I fixed several full dinners and breakfasts for the family and everything was there. We also enjoyed the firepit a few nights. Bring flashlights for the evening outside, it is pitch dark with no other lights around, and bring bug spray for fishing! We hope to make it back some day - Thank you Gary for your hospitality and sharing your wonderful home with us! Sandi and Rich Smith - Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Perfect Secluded Cabin

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent 3 nights here for our 1 year anniversary. Everything was perfect. The lake is very private, we saw 2 boats the entire time we were there. The cabin is set up very nicely. Everything is new and well appointed. The kitchen is well stocked and the beds are very comfortable. The cabin has a nice open feeling and looking out over the lake is perfect while cooking or just sitting on the porch while having a cup of coffee. It is a little walk to the water, maybe a minute and a half to two minutes or you can drive down if you want to bring fishing or swimming gear. The boats and canoe and kayak are all great to explore the lake. There is a nice sandy beach area, just be careful if its going to rain. The water covers all the beach when it rains so don't leave anything there if you know its going to rain. We spent our mornings enjoying the sounds of nature while having coffee on the porch and then our days were spent on the water or on the beach. At night you should enjoy the fire pit and the night sounds of the woods. The fire pit is closer to the house so you don't have to walk far in the dark if you have kids. Watching the beavers swim every night was always a treat. The dirt road in is not too bad but it does have a few spots that would require a car to go a little slower. Gary was amazing, very friendly and wanted to make sure we had everything and were happy with the place. He is very proud of his property, as he should be. This place is perfect for a family, a couple looking for privacy, or a few couples looking to get away together. We travel a lot to be able to experience what the country has to offer. Gary and his family have created a great hideaway. We would love to go back!

The area around Croghan is a mix of hardwood and pine forests. The local farms and quaint farm markets offer locally grown and prepared foods. This is a great area for exploring by car, bike, by hiking, or by ATV or Snowmobile. There are remote beaches, clear springs, and waterfalls accessible only by water from our lodge for the ultimate Adirondack retreat!
