Northern Michigan Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-5)

On pristine Nowland Lake, just a few minutes from downtown Charlevoix, and located in an isolated quiet valley, our clean little cottage with ceramic tile throughout, is perfect for couples or young families. 600 feet of frontage includes a sandy beach, 2 docks, and plenty of room to stroll around or play. You will enjoy a quiet respite from the busy pace of downtown Charlevoix. Fishing, swimming, and viewing wildlife (turkey, deer, coyote, mink, beaver, eagles, and loons) are the main occupations of relaxing at Nowland Lake. The western view from the cottage provides gorgeous sunset shows and amazingly dark starry nights. Take a one mile stroll up the road and buy fresh produce from Kitely Farm, or take a 10 minute drive into Charlevoix for shopping, dining, festivals, bike rentals, boat rentals, and all kinds of resort town fun. Petoskey, Bay Harbor, Harbor Springs, Boyne Mountain, and Traverse City are all within a one hour drive.

Our cottage is part of a condominium, (10 separate cottages facing west toward the lake), with unobstructed western views and 600 feet of direct frontage on the lake. Nearly all owners are 'weekenders', so it's usually very quiet. There are several fire pits available and a charcoal grill for your personal use. There are not many homes on the lake, so it is very quiet. The interior includes tile floors, comfortable furniture, and a bedroom with a queen size mattress. Care has been taken to provide an environment that is more safe for people with asthma and allergies. A shared washing machine and dryer are available for your complimentary use in a separate building.

About Beverly Hardesty

A Michigan native, I have been vacationing at Nowland Lake for the past ten years. My husband and I purchased the cottage in April of 2015. We live outside of Louisville, Kentucky, and have 3 grown daughters, all of whom are happily married.

Why Beverly Hardesty chose Northern Michigan

Our love of nature and the serenity of Nowland Lake drew us back to the Charlevoix area over the course of many happy summers. The cottage provides a wonderful place to stay while exploring northwest Michigan's beautiful beaches, rivers and resort towns. We renewed our wedding vows in the summer of 2014 at sunset, just yards away from the cottage's patio, and it was an experience to treasure.

What makes this cottage unique

There is a feeling of seclusion, even though downtown Charlevoix is just a short drive away. The loons are truly unique, and you'll never forget the beautiful and eerie sounds they make at night. Because we're in a valley, far from highways, it's really quiet, and there's no light pollution, so we enjoy a night sky like no other.

A Joyful Return

  • 5 of 5

All year long we have looked forward to returning to "our" little cabin by the lake! Turning down the main road this time held even more excitement as we knew exactly what was awaiting us after each bend in the lane. The experience did not disappoint! The final turn toward the lake when we first glimpsed the sparkling water was breathtaking! There is just nothing better than touring the spectacular scenery of Charlevoix, Petoskey, and Harbor Springs only to return to a perfect respite by sweet Nowland Lake. The loons were often heard and seen as they moved about the lake with their babies. Robins sprinkled the yard. The beach was peaceful with amazing sunsets to enjoy until the last of the pink sky disappeared. We enjoyed the luxury of cooking breakfast each morning while overlooking the lake, grilling on the porch, and taking long walks. Our comings and goings always included the blessing of wildlife - a turkey and babies, a rabbit, birds, and so very many deer. On one drive in we saw nine deer! Suffice to say that we booked for the following year before we even left and we are already counting down until we return again to the place we have adopted in our hearts.

Charming lakeside cabin- true up north experience

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend and I decided to come up here for memorial day weekend after she finished grad school. This cabin was exactly what we were looking for- log cabin style, waterfront property with a great view, close enough to town to do things during the day but secluded enough to be able to fully relax and just enjoy being up north. The cabin itself was in great shape- very clean and looked exactly like the pictures. We loved all the little details that were put into the cabin, right down to the moose chairs and moose coffee mugs. The bed was extremely comfortable, we loved the wooden frame continuing the log cabin style charm. The bathroom was very clean and plenty of towels and TP were provided. The window A/C unit was helpful on the humid days and kept the cabin nice and cool. The kitchen had everything we needed, including an indoor grill. The binder with information provided was very helpful and gave many suggestions of where to go to eat, shop, sight see, etc. The cabin was fully stocked with enough household items, having pretty much everything we needed besides our food. We didn't see many people during our stay except another couple staying next door- they were very pleasant and helpful. We got to enjoy beautiful sunsets on the dock and enjoyed coffee every morning on the cute purple furniture overlooking the lake. We definitely would recommend this cabin to anyone who is looking for a relaxing, true up north experience in Michigan. Thanks for a great stay, we hope to return again soon!

Charming cottage on Nowland Lake in Charlevoix, MI

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a wonderful week of rest & relaxation in this tidy little cottage and on a beautiful lake.

Fishing, kayaking, walking in the woods and watching sunsets while listening to loons calling.

Would highly recommend it for a lovely getaway from the hectic, hustle & bustle of life.

Owner's Response: The cottage is, indeed, a lovely place to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Nowland Lake is unique in that it hosts a loon nesting area. Local residents take great care to respect the loon habitat. Your next getaway in northern Michigan awaits!

A little slice of heaven

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking to get away from it all but still have the conveniences of town close by, this place is for you! Nowland Lake truly is a hidden gem: peaceful, clear water and a stillness that soothes the soul. The cottage itself is very comfortable and had everything you would need for your stay. The bedding is all white (feels cleaner) and smelled fresh and the memory foam mattress topper made it feel like we were sleeping in the clouds. There is a small window air conditioner that is sufficient for the space. With the breeze off the lake and the cool evenings, we really didn't even need to use the a/c. Overall, I would recommend staying at this cottage to everyone! We cannot wait to go back!

Owner's Response: The cottage offers the comforts of home on a small scale! We take great pride in our high standards of cleanliness. The location of the cottage is unique due to its closeness to the natural world and the lovely resort town of Charlevoix. Nowland Lake is actually one of the "Small Gem" lakes in northern Michigan, commonly referred to as "The Tip of the Mitt" by Michiganders.

A special place to spend a vacation!

  • 5 of 5

As we turned off of the main road toward the cottage we were immediately taken by the beautiful landscape with rolling hills and wide green fields. We looked on expectantly as we passed through fields along the tree-lined road. As we made the final turn toward the cottage the lake was in view and we were immediately thrilled and so thankful for this beautiful place. We found the cottage to be cozy, extremely clean, and just right for the two of us. All that we needed to enjoy the week by cooking in and relaxing was in place. Best of all, the view from the cottage was perfect. That first night we spent time by the lake and enjoyed a beautiful sunset as the loons called and danced on the water. It was such a treat to have this view and nature just a few steps away. Throughout the week we enjoyed short drives to Charlevoix, Boyne City, Petoskey, and Harbor Springs. We made several stops at a local farm to pick and purchase fresh fruit and vegetables for dinner lakeside. We enjoyed swimming in the lake and taking long walks along the road where we had several encounters with the local wildlife. The owners were helpful if we had any questions, making sure our stay was the best. The day of our departure was certainly sad as the moment we drove away we were already anticipating our return. This lovely cottage is nestled in such a special spot with immediate access to nature as well as the small-town charm of Michigan and its pristine lakes. We enjoyed every moment!

You can find Petoskey stones right on the beach, and in downtown Charlevoix you can climb Mt. McSauba in the summer for magnificent views of the coast along Lake Michigan-a must see! The marina downtown is gorgeous at night, and the musical fountain is a delight for kids of all ages, just remember a bathing suit as you splash and play!
