Why The Owner chose Ocracoke

As defined by Merrian Webster: "Treasure Chest":a large box that is filled with gold, silver, jewels, etc. —often used figuratively. This holds true for this lovely, 2nd floor apartment. This place offers so many "gems": tucked in a quiet, residential neighborhood, with unparalleled views of the sound, and fully loaded amenities, It's the perfect place for a romantic getaway, or a quiet spot for rest and relaxation...away from it all, perfectly private, yet close to the best things the island has to offer.

What makes this cottage unique

Offering ultimate privacy and comfort, with spectacular views of the sound. Within steps of Springer's Point Nature Reserve, yet close to all restaurants, shops, bars and island attractions...and, of course, minutes away from the 12 miles of pristine beach, that Ocracoke is famous for.

Guestbook comments from the manager

This is our first time staying in this cottage and we will definitely be returning! This year we came down for my husband's 30th birthday! It's the perfect time of year to visit the island - great weather & less people! Hope to stay a week next year

Top 10 reasons it's so hard to leave the Treasure Chest, the little house on the edge of the earth

  • 5 of 5

1. It is COZY!!!

2. It's super clean

3. Its open design is laid out perfectly

4. It's got 2 decks, one for sunrise, the other for sunset

5. It's soooooo quiet

6. The sunset deck (which is covered, unlike the pictured deck) overlooks the Oregon Inlet, which connects the Atlantic Ocean to the mainland

7. The sunset deck looks right at Portsmouth Island, which is kinda like the east coast

Alcatraz: its well-maintained buildings haven't been inhabited in decades

8. You don't have to dash out on the first morning (we checked in late) since there were filters and coffee in the kitchen already

9. Even though it's immaculate and well appointed, it feels just like home--your home as long as you're there--not like a museum or a set for a real estate brochure

10. It's at the western edge of Ocracoke Island, the coolest place on the east coast (you don't think Blackbeard hung out in Martha's Vineyard, do you?)

My love and I hadn't stayed under the same roof in over 5 years. Long irrelevant story, the only point of which is this: after nothing but a few phone calls, we knew we were putting everything on the line with a weekend getaway together in person to see if our newfound magic would take. We chose the Treasure Chest. Seemed like a fitting name for a massive, crazy gamble.

WOW!!! It worked. We're both kind of still stunned. If you wanna feel like a couple of starstruck teenagers, come here. It's got the goods.

Better than we imagined!

  • 5 of 5

We had such a great time on Ocracoke. The Treasure Chest turned out to be a beautiful little house, just perfect for two. The view was amazing and better than we expected. I think we spent 90% of our time on the screened porch, looking out at the sound whether we were drinking our morning coffee or watching the sunset with a glass of wine. The house was immaculate, the bed very comfortable and the kitchen had all the cooking utensils we needed. The only thing we had trouble with was the grill. We couldn't get it to light (which may have been b/c of the wind) and it needed a good cleaning. We got along fine without it though.

We liked being able to easily walk down to the sound side beach where the water is calm and warm. We also had fun renting bikes and riding them all over the island exploring the cute, unique shops. We love that all the businesses are independently owned. The meals we had at Dajio and Cafe Atlantic were both excellent. The "mermaid float" at the Slushy Stand is a great afternoon treat. And be sure to try some locally caught seafood from the Ocracoke Seafood Company. Delicious! And of course, Ocracoke's beaches are unbelievably wild, and beautiful. We even found a perfect conch shell to bring home. We can't wait to go back!
