|Minimum Stay||7 nights|
Situated in the green rolling hills of Poitou-Charentes on the edge of the village of Luchapt, Le Rocher is to be found at the end of a lane, providing a very secluded and peaceful spot. This old farmhouse has been lovingly converted into a welcoming and very well-equipped holiday home.
Le Rocher sleeps 8 and is ideal for two families sharing a holiday. However, should you have a smaller party, please do get in touch as we may be able to offer you a discounted rate.
We have holidayed here as a family since our children were 3 and 6, so over the past 7 years we have worked out what is needed when you are on holiday in this beautiful area. It doesn't take long to let go of all the stresses and strains of life at home, to slow down to the pace of life in rural France. We have had lots of friends and family stay with us, and some have holidayed independently too, and they all say how relaxing and re-energising staying here has been. And most importantly, for us anyway, it is time together as a family just to have fun!
On the ground floor, there is a master bedroom has a king-sized bed and an en-suite shower room, a further double bedroom, a bunk bedroom and a separate bathroom and WC.
In the spacious attic there are 3 single beds, though two are slightly smaller in size and therefore more suitable for children. There are few children's toys, some games such as Pictionary, Scrabble, Jenga and Twister and a few jigsaws.
We also have a travel cot, potty and child's booster seat with tray that can be attached to one of the dining chairs.
The main living area for the house is the open plan salon on the ground floor, with a fully equipped kitchen, dining area and comfortable lounge area with a coffee table and wood burning stove, should you visit outwith the summer season! There is a TV (although no aerial) and DVD player (which can also play CDs), and an ipod docking station in the main salon, as well as an additional TV/DVD player in the spacious attic room, but we don't have WiFi.
Outside, there is a large private garden, with an above-ground pool – (6m x 4m) - that has decking on two sides providing space for sun loungers. The large deck that wraps around the back and side of the house has tables and chairs, sun loungers, a barbecue and a large parasol and provides the perfect place to enjoy the uninterrupted views of the countryside. There is a path opposite the front door that leads down to a small river, where the family can picnic and children can paddle and explore the rock pools.
The area around the village of Luchapt is perfect for walking and there are maps at the house showing various routes you can take and several of our guests have enjoyed going for runs on the roads and pathways around Luchapt. The area is equally popular with cyclists and we have two adult bicycles available at the house should they be of interest.
The nearest town is L’Isle Jourdain, (15 min drive) with supermarket, outdoor pool with slides, café (with free wi-fi) and excellent boulangerie. It also offers bungee jumping from the viaduct!
My name is Hilary Lawrence and I live with my husband Roger in West Sussex with our two daughters. We moved here from London when it came time for our eldest daughter to go to school, and have enjoyed bringing up our girls in a friendly, village community. We both work freelance so the idea behind buying a property in France was so that if one of us had to work, the other could still take the children on holiday without too much trouble. It took us 4 years to renovate Le Rocher, employing local craftsmen to do the building and electrical work, and then doing the painting and decorating ourselves, ably assisted by friends, family and the children! It has taken a while but we have holidayed at Le Rocher for the last 7 years now, and we know that it has been worth all the effort. Friends and family join us every year and they all love the peace and quiet and the pace of life that this area of France provides. A few years ago we started to rent out Le Rocher, and one guest, who hadn't visited before, wrote 'it is one of the most peaceful, unspoilt places we have ever stayed.'
Hilary Lawrence purchased this cottage in 2005
Roger found Le Rocher very much by chance. A friend he was staying with while searching, had mentioned his quest to a friend of hers, who happened to notice the house advertised in the Post Office. She took Roger to see the house on the morning he was to fly home and, despite the property being very run down, was struck immediately by it's fantastic location. At the end of a road, with no passing traffic, uninterrupted views across the fields beyond and the sound of the small river at the bottom of the hill the only noise he could hear, he had a feeling it could be something special. Eleven years later, we are still discovering what Luchapt and the surrounding area has to offer - as our children grow older we are finding more adventurous things to do - but most importantly, we still love Le Rocher and the chance it gives us as a family to recharge our batteries.
What a wonderful, well-equipped cottage. We spent an extremely relaxing week at le Rocher. It is family friendly and safe, with a great pool and a river just metres away. The house is very clean, beautifully decorated and spacious. Our children loved making use of the great choice of DVDs, games and toys available. The garden is secluded and has beautiful views of the local countryside. The owners were helpful and friendly, and their recommendations for places to visit/local attractions were superb!
If you want some swimming pools with slides and chutes, there are two outdoor heated pools, in Bellac (20 minutes away) and L’Isle Jourdain (15 minutes). The Bellac one is my favourite and is open all day (the latter closes for lunch, although it does have a nice park area by it with picnic tables under the trees). It may be worth your while to buy a ‘carnet’ of ten tickets, which works out cheaper (though it is not expensive anyway). Bellac also has a bar within the pool that sells ice creams and chips. If the weather is not so good, there is a good indoor pool in Montmorillon – (approx 30 minutes away), which is also a lovely town to visit. Please be aware that, for nearly all pools in France, they demand proper swimming trunks/costumes and not shorts.
Roger tried water -skiing for the first time this year on the Vienne in L'isle Jourdain. Bookable in advance, terrific instructor, great fun and fabulous setting.
We always go kayaking at Moussac (20 mins). You can go for either a short 2 hour trip down the Vienne or a longer half day trip. Well organised, beautiful stretch of the river and a lot of fun. The canoes take either 2 or 3 people so adults and children can go.
We also discovered this year an 18 hole mini golf course in Availles Limouzine (15 mins). An inexpensive way to spend a fun couple of hours, situated alongside the river.
There is an inland beach at St.Martin L’Ars, with a beach, swimming area, café and play area. Good fun. (approx 25 mins away)
We have not been to Futuroscope, just north of Poitiers (approx 1 hour away), but it is the third most popular attraction in France and apparently makes a really good day out.
The following attractions we have been to:
- Vallée des Singes, Romagne (40 mins). Big monkey park. Highly recommended.
- Planète des Crocodiles, Civaux (30 mins). Not quite so enticing but good if weather is not so good. These last two offer a cheaper joint ticket for both places.
- Géants du Ciel, Chauvigny (40 mins). Terrific aerial show of eagles, owls, herons etc in a very pleasant castle ruin setting.
- Parc des Animaux, Hiesse (35 mins). Low-key, but rather a nice outing and has a restaurant.
- Oradour sur Glane (40 mins). A village whose inhabitants were massacred by the Germans in World War 2 has been left as it was, as a memorial. Very moving place to visit with an informative museum.
- DefiPlanet (40 mins)- Adventure park, animal park, magic forest, picnic areas and much more. Brilliant day out. For more information check out the link on the links section.
- Velorail at Confolens (30 mins) Cycling on disused train tracks! A fantastic way to see the countryside surrounding the very beautiful town of Confolens. Each 'train' takes 5 people. Great fun for the family and good exercise too!
