6 miles from authentic lobster villages of Jonesport & Beals Island. Cottage setting is rural, private and peaceful. Spectacular ocean views. View the stunning sunrise on your own private deck. Amazing night sky without light pollution. Watch bald eagles soar overhead, shorebirds in abundance, occasional seals playing and sunning. Located on the Great Bar - at low tide walk out and harvest your own fresh mussels or just enjoy your own private beach. Watch lobster boats at work on the water. 15 miles to Roque Bluff State Park with sandy beach and hiking trails. 15 miles to Machias - UMM campus, Summer Machias Bay Chamber Series in July/Aug., Blueberry Festival in August. 80 mi/1.5 hour drive to Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park depending on traffic or 45 min. to Winter Harbor ferry to Bar Harbor. 50 miles to Lubec/Campobello Island.
This is an ideal location if you are looking to get away from the crowds and traffic jams of so many summer tourist locations. It is like stepping back in time to a slower, unhurried pace.
Cottage is clean and well cared for; we hope you will treat it with care if you stay with us. It is a very special place. It was our vacation retreat until we built a retirement home nearby and moved here full time in 2007.
Comments from our guestbook:
'There are so many choices these days when you’re going somewhere to stay... You plan and dream through the winter and spring. The excitement builds as each work day goes past. It’s so nice when life exceeds your expectations' which this place surely has done. Thanks for the memories…'
'After two fairly good trips to Acadia a few years back, this was a nice change from the crowds…Your place is absolutely beautiful as others have already stated, we couldn’t ask for anything more…'
'What a dream - three weeks to decompress Down East with good friends and enough time on my own to truly explore…I’ve loved discovering the heath, bogs & islands - peeling away the layers to better understand Jonesport life and then to come home to this fabulous indoor/outdoor house…'
'Thank you so much for the best Maine vacation we’ve ever had. See you next year…'
'When we walked in the front door, our highest hopes were immediately exceeded by the view of the cove. The magical feeling never left us for the entire week of our stay…It was a week to remember; one which we hope to repeat next year…'
This was one of the most enjoyable and relaxing vacations you could have. The cottage is beautifully located with exceptional views. The cottage was very clean and also very comfortable in all aspects, you can tell the owners care a lot about their guests. Access to the shore is easy and quick and it was most enjoyable to be able to walk the sandbar during low tides. Sunrises were amazing and just relaxing on the deck watching the lobster boats in the distance and enjoying the antics of the loons right out front is a great way to start the day. There are also many things to explore close by. Sandy River beach is a short drive and you can walk to the island during low tide, Lobster Rolls from Bayview Take out on Beals island are most enjoyable and is only 10 minutes away. Great Wass Island Preserve is also close by and now a new favorite place for a hike to some unforgettable views. We will definitely be returning for another visit and would happily recommend this cottage. A million thanks to Mary for helping us have such a wonderfully memorable vacation!
One never really knows what to expect when renting sight unseen. This was the best we have experienced. Awesome owners on the same property, but completely left on our own. Shielded from road noise by hill and thick dense woods. Awe inspiring sun rises over the bay. Fresh garden vegatables made available complimentary. Authentic Maine charm and small town simplicity. A cottage stocked with things we never would have expected; like stepping into our own home.
Our thanks for making our stay so relaxing and peaceful. We needed it!
the cottage was exactly as we expected. Clean, quiet, comfortable and serene. The only sounds were from the birds and the ducks and shifting tides. We enjoyed the cottage during the morning hours for coffee on the deck and breakfast at home. the rest of the day was spent on day trips to Machias and Lubec or Acadia National Park. Cadillac Mountain is a wonderful experience; Bar Harbor is fun and bustling and offers a wide variety of delicious food. Whether visiting Bar Harbor or the West Quaddy Headlight in Lubec, stopping at Helens for coffee and pie was a regular part of trip. We celebrated a birthday and Father's Day and the feel of family and home was all around. Mary stopped by to welcome us and offer any help we might need. Beware that the sun rises EARLY on the bay but the view is Spectacular! We would definitely recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a little piece of heaven in the land of first dawn!
Our experience far exceeded our expectations. The cottage was clean, comfortable, well stocked with essentials and positioned beautifully beside the Great Bar and Rogue Island. The more than sufficient windows on the end of the cottage allowed for viewing of fabulous sunrises and peaceful, totally splendid views of the coastal area. Mary provided us with total privacy but was available for any questions. We both have many memories from out week long visit and would highly recommend this selection for a very private, quiet and relaxed vacation.
We cannot describe how much we enjoyed our stay at this rental property. Owners live next door but were very hands off during our stay and we felt comfortable roaming the waterfront area. Mary was very easy to deal with and very accomadating. The sand bar was amazing and we spent a lot of time on the bar picking up shells and gathering mussels to eat. Yummy! The blueberries were amazing also. We hope to return to this wonderful place in August 2016. One of our best vacations ever.
This is the third time we have stayed at this beautiful rental home on the edge of Chandler's Bay overlooking the Great Bar and Roque Island. This time we brought friends. There was plenty of room for four of us. As always, everything is thoughtfully arranged and set out for guests--a complete kitchen, tasteful decoration, lots of terrific information about the area (and the landlord answers any further questions about local stores, restaurants, things to do). They even have a blueberry field on their property--we had blueberry pancakes twice--and we picked up bags of mussels on the Great Bar and cooked them. Amazingly fresh and good!! If you are planning a trip to this most Down East part of Maine, theirs is the place to stay. We will definitely be back!
Enjoy the real 'Down East' Maine. Located near a lobstering village with working harbor and public boat dock. Buy lobsters at the local pound on the docks. Hike Nature Conservancy hiking trails on nearby Great Wass Island (15 min). Boat tours to Machias Seal Island to see Puffins. Less than an hour’s drive to Schoodic Point, the less visited side of Acadia with crashing surf and more hiking opportunities. Enjoy 4th of July in Jonesport complete with Lobster Boat Races. Visit the Machias Blueberry Festival in August. Art and music events nearby during summer season. Local public library hosts several events including Music in the Library and local Artist Receptions. Splendid, quiet, peaceful location- away from the crowds!
