Pietrasanta is most famous in Versilia for the marble and bronze artists and their work. In fact it often hosts international artists and sculptors who come to stay there, sometimes for long periods of time, to shape their creations. Some famous artists of note who called Pietrasanta home are Michelangelo and Vasari. Overtime, this small town has become an artistic centre, hosting lots of art galleries, temporary and seasonal art expositions and a picturesque historical centre. After a visit or tour through the city you can spend the day shopping in the city's central street.

Area Description:

If you need a relaxing holiday with a variety of villas, discos and night clubs, Marina di Pietrasanta (located on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea) could be the perfect place for you. At the beginning of the last century with the boom of tourism this coastal town began to flourish. This city with a landscape composed of green pinewoods and the famous large beach has it all. Marina di Pietrasanta offers a wide variety of fashionable discos and clubs where you can enjoy your summer nights.

A particular attention is payed to culture with the LaVersiliana festival, a series of cultural events and shows hosted inside the Versiliana theatre.

average rating of 5.0 based on 2 reviews

absolutely amazing

  • 5 of 5

Ancient city of medieval origin, founded in 1255 by the mayor of Lucca, Milan source, Guiscardo from Pietrasanta, the town of Pietrasanta, also called "Little Athens", was by then half of the greatest sculptors of all ages and has always hosted great artists like Michelangelo Buonarroti and most recently Henry Moore, Fernando Botero, Pomodoro, Folon or Igor Mitoraj. Attractive to the proximity of the marble quarries, Pietrasanta, an important stop on the route of the Via Francigena, found himself immediately to the goods of the military powers of Pisa, Lucca, Florence and Genoa, fighting each other for control of the region. From 1313 to 1328, Pietrasanta experienced its heyday under Castruccio Castracani, which he built in 1324 the Rochetta Arrighina, united the ancient port in Pisa, only door remained intact ancient city walls. In 1484, following the death of Castruccio Castracani and a fire in the city, Pietrasanta passes from the hands Genoese domination of the Medici, and a hundred years later is delivered to the French King Charles VIII of Anjou, who returned it to the city of Lucca, for then be returned in 1513 to Giovanni de 'Medici in Florence. After a period of decline between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, the rebirth of Pietrasanta occurred in the nineteenth century due to land reclamation projects undertaken by Leopold II, Grand Duke of Tuscany that contributed so also crucial to the development of hotels and houses. Historical capital of Versilia and capital of marble craftsmanship (opening of the school for marble craftsmanship in 1842), Pietrasanta should be visited, as well as for its historical craft workshops and its many art galleries, also for its St. Martins (1256), better known as the Duomo, and its bell tower, the Baptistery (XVIIs.), the church of Saint Augustine (XIVs.), the Museum of Sketches, Rocca di Sala and many historic buildings.
