About Karen and John Siegfried
After living and working overseas for most of our adult lives, we purchased Wade's Mill and moved back to America from Cambridge, England, in the summer of 2016. During his 30+ year career in the Energy industry, John lived in Brazil, Nigeria, Kazakhstan, Norway and England (London and Cambridge) and worked in 60 countries in petroleum exploration. He was captivated by the prospect of shifting his career from energy to water-powered milling. After apprenticing over a period of six months with the two previous millers, John took over as Miller in July 2016. Karen’s career in the Publishing and Media industry took her from New York to San Francisco to London, where she and John met and married. Although meeting across the Atlantic, Karen and John discovered they had spent their toddler years in the same town in Westchester County, New York. What a great coincidence! Karen took an 8-year parenting break after the birth of their son, returning to Higher Education Administration at the University of Cambridge where she was the Executive Director of the Cambridge MBA from 2007-2017. Karen is an avid and experienced gardener and has been expanding the horticultural side of Wade’s Mill’s activities with landscaping and gardens.
Karen and John Siegfried purchased this Cabin in 2016
Why Karen and John Siegfried chose Raphine
Neither of us is from Virginia, but were introduced to the Mill by long time friends...who also matchmade and introduced us to each other in London, so we knew they knew a good opportunity when they saw it! We had visited them at their home just up the hill from the Mill in the summer of 2015 and fell in love with the area. The history, the scenery, the wide and varied range of things to see and do, the great local food scene and the welcoming and friendly people, the rural ambiance but the proximity to great cities (Charlottesville, Richmond and Washington, D.C., plus the fact you can catch a train in Charlottesville in the morning and be in New York by early afternoon)...the Shenandoah Valley was a paradise! The historic Mill, Milller's House (c. 1850 and addition in 1890) and surrounding farm, with a creek running through it and ample space for new gardens captivated our imagination. Not to mention the opportunity to take over a well-estabilished business, Virginia's oldest continuously operating commercial grist mill (founded in 1750), with lots of opportunity for growth.
What makes this Cabin unique
Our property is only 10 minutes off of the interstate (I81) but the quiet, peaceful setting and beautiful rural landscape is a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life. We have several neighboring farms with farm shops from whom we can get produce, chicken, eggs, beef, lamb, pork, cheese, milk, butter...even ice cream and wood-fired bread! And then there are two great towns nearby (Lexington, 20 minutes south and Staunton, 30 minutes north) that offer wonderful restaurants (lots of farm to table offerings), music, arts, history and culture, etc. Charlottesville, with even more history, restaurants and shopping is only 45 mintues away and we can get to Washington, D.C., for a bit city "fix" in 2 1/2 - 3 hours.

Cozy authentic rustic cabin with modern amenities. Setting, with creek, starry night sky and deer, was beautiful. Grist mill was interesting, with delicious apple butter. John and Karen were so nice and thought of everything we needed. We cooked meals and sitting at the dining room table with our son and daughter in law was so enjoyable.
Thanks for choosing our cabin for your family get together. We're so glad you enjoyed your stay!
This place was amazing. The owners gave wonderful advice on places to visit!
I will definitely come back for another weekend getaway. Karen was a wonderful host and the space was awesome. Fire pit with marshmallows? Such a nice touch on. Cold night.

We're so glad you enjoyed your getaway at our Cabin!
We had such an amazing time! John was so nice to talk with (Karen was out of town at the time). Only wish is that we would have planned a longer stay. So many things we did not get to do, even just at the cabin!
We're so glad you enjoyed your stay! And best wishes for your new arrival, hope you'll come visit again when there are three!
An incredible place!
Wow, a completely authentic 1800's cabin with modern amenities! a perfect setting for a family retreat. A large beautifully landscaped meadow, creek, on a historic site. The cabin is beautifully decorated and very comfortable. The first floor ceiling is only 6'2" high which was normal for period cabins. The second floor has vaulted ceilings. An awesome back deck to enjoy morning coffee and watching the kids play in the creek. The hosts were so accommodating and ensured everything during our stay was perfect. lots of area things to do and many hiking trails. We have added to our "places to visit again" list!
We're so glad you enjojyed your stay! It was so nice to host your family and find out about all the fun things you were up to in the area. We hope you also got some great stargazing in! Hope to see you again next time you are in the area. Kind regards, Karen and John.

We started each morning with coffee on the back deck and ended the day with wine there as well. Make sure you visit the Mill. Wonderfully interesting and John is very knowledgeable. There is so much to do in the area! Farm stands, excellentrestaurants, breweries, cideries,
