Saint-Vigor-des-Monts Barn Rental Photos and Description

A One Bedroomed Gite Offering Beautiful Views Of The Vallée De La Vire

Dating from the 12th century and reputedly owned by Eleanor of Brittany, granddaughter of Eleanor d'Aquitaine, Le Calipel offers you the opportunity to relax in the beautiful Normandy countryside yet is within easy reach of all the well known attractions. A building full of character that has been sympathetically restored yet retaining original and historic features whilst providing modern day comforts. Furnished with a mixture of quality antique and modern furniture, Le Calipel offers you a comfortable base to explore whatever the time of year.

In the summer, open the windows and watch the swallows swoop over the pond which is home to a diverse fauna; or in the winter, light the traditional French wood burner after a day exploring and snuggle down to enjoy the beautiful local produce bought at a market. On summer evenings, relax in your private garden with a bottle of wine whilst cooking on the barbecue.

After a busy day, whatever the time of year, have a long soak in the antique French double ended bath, perhaps à deux? A refreshing shower will wake you up in the morning after a good night's sleep in your king size antique bed ready to explore some more!

About Donna Howard

I moved to France in 2006 to be with my lover who had moved here in 2002 and decided to convert part of the barn into a gite for me to run. My background was in healthcare which isn't too far from hospitality and my love of history and traditional décor and furnishings has helped me develop this popular gite. Changes in furniture and decorations are often made as we see something we like more on our travels throughout the region.

Donna Howard purchased this barn in 2002

Why Donna Howard chose Manche

The property was chosen partly for its position, at the end of a no through road yet close to the excellent road links which France has to offer and also for what it had to offer. Our house, whilst in the same grounds as the gite, is separate; whilst the enormous barn offered plenty of space for the storage of our vintage and antique furniture and for the gite.

What makes this barn unique

Being at the end of a no through road, the property offers peace and quiet with just the noises of nature in the background. The only traffic that might pass us is the odd tractor as the farmers arrive to check on their cows. There are fields just outside of the gates which give you plenty of space to let your dog run free and experience new smells and textures. As we are residents, we are able to offer unique advice and ideas of things to do and places to see.

Perfect!

This a lovely rustic Gite renovated to a high standard whilst maintaining the original features which include an amazing fireplace. The Gite is very comfortable and warm but there is a lovely wood burner which adds a lovely ambience. The bathroom has a wonderful old roll top bath in addition to a modern shower. The bed is soooo comfortable too. Donna and Ed are perfect hosts and nothing is overlooked for your comfort. A lovely welcome pack included wine and local produce even a supper and treats for the dog. The area is so quiet and peaceful but within easy reach of lots of places . We had a perfect stay and will be back. Highly recommended .

Le Calipel is located in the heart of the Normandy bocage and is ideally placed to visit all the well known attractions such as Mont St Michel, the Bayeux Tapestry and the D-Day beaches and some of the lesser known, for example the Souterroscope Des Ardoisiers. This ancient slate mine takes you into the bowels of the earth whilst entertaining you with a sound and light show. The Musée Christian Dior at Granville not only has a changing annual exhibition of Dior couture but beautiful gardens to wander round and admire the view over the bay.

Fancy something a bit more energetic? How about bungee jumping or a dry luge run at the Viaduc de la Souleuvre? A viaduct constructed to plans drawn up by Gustav Eiffel and now part of a lovely country walk.

Go for a canoe trip down the river Vire at Pont Farcy and spot otters at play and kingfishers darting, or play tennis. There are many beautiful and interesting walks- follow the pilgrims' route around our calvaires or enjoy the woods which overlook Le Calipel at the top of the hill and see if you can find us from the view point.

Visit a different market every morning and enjoy the hustle and bustle of rural France whilst admiring the quality and variety of goods for sale-from food to fashion with often a great choice of leather handbags!

From Le Calipel, it is easy to travel to pay respect at the Museums, battle sites and beaches dedicated to the brave men and women of World War II....perhaps to remember a loved one.

At the end of a busy day exploring, you will return home to rest and plan for your next trip out.
