About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + 2 Sleeper Sofas, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

McNeil Cottage is a two bedroom, live-in, furnished cottage that sleeps four to six (two double beds and two sleeper sofas). Nestled in a cove, with a hard, sandy bottom, it is great for all water sports. The lake side of the cottage has a large family room/front porch with large wall to wall windows for unobstructed views of the lake and spectacular sunsets. The outside deck has ample room and seating for comfortable lounging. It is a private, quiet place on the lake, but just a short walk or drive to the village of Lake Leelanau offering a church, grocery, gas station, boat launch, marina, as well as parks, restaurants, bars, and shops.

In the heart of Leelanau County, enjoy the festivals, shopping, dining, and sight seeing in the villages of Lake Leelanau, Suttons Bay, Leland, and Glen Arbor, just naming a few. Also, there is an abundance of hiking/biking trails, water sport activities, wineries, breweries, local and state parks. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Shoreline is a beautiful 30 minute drive. And quaint Traverse City is just a 30 minute drive in the other direction.

About Rose Laing

I am a retired school teacher, and along with my husband and brother own the McNeil Cottage. The cottage has been in our family since the mid seventies. Before that it belonged to our uncle and aunt (mom's sister), who were the original owners. We acquired the cottage from our parents in 1993. This cottage has a long tradition of hosting families for summer vacation fun and relaxation. Our own family enjoys the time there every summer, and hope you will too!

Rose Laing purchased this cottage in 1993

Why Rose Laing chose Northern Michigan

If you enjoy a relaxing, unplugged (no cable, no phone, no internet) vacation, with breakfast at the water's edge and the days filled with all that Leelanau has to offer, come to the McNeil cottage. Enjoy a midnight swim under the stars or a romantic bonfire - enjoy the lake life.

What makes this cottage unique

The lake is large, beautiful, and supports all water related activities. The sunsets are nature's gift each evening. The location is private, but convenient. It is a perfect place to unplug and unwind from the stresses of life. If you enjoy a natural setting, you will enjoy our cottage. It is a place that we love!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Have always enjoyed their stay at McNeil cottage. Third year in a row & just booked another week for 2004.

Perfect vacation!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying at the cottage, and what an enjoyable, relaxing vacation. It is pleasantly comfortable, cozy and perfectly supplied with every need. It's set in a convenient location to surrounding towns. Matter of fact, we spent hours at the beach in nearby Leland, looking for the Leland blue stones. What fun! Also, waking up every morning to a great lake view just a few feet from the front door. Appreciated every communication with Rose, she was friendly, considerate and eager for our stay to be pleasing. Thank you so much. We plan to be back!

Awesome and affordable!

Nice and clean cottage. I Have now rented it about 15 weeks over the years. Rose and Lennie are very helpful owners. The front porch/deck provides a beautiful view of lake and has comfortable furniture. The dock is solid and has cleats to tie up my boat.

Wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

We were delighted to meet Rose, who is a sweetheart. The cottage was perfect for us, a couple with a teenage daughter. The setting was peaceful and lovely, and the cottage was very clean and comfortable. We were so glad we didn't stay with the rest of the wedding guests at Fountain Point, as it was noisy there, the cabins were not on the lake, and it would have cost $300-$500/night there. Pick up some Indian food at J&T's!

Convenient, Cozy, and Clean

  • 5 of 5

What a great place! The water is shallow for about 100 yards, which is great for small kids who want to play in the row boat (which my 6 year old did for an hour each morning). The sandy bottom was beautiful to look at and soft on the feet. One morning we saw a ferret (or similar) swim by which was good fun.

The house is exactly as the pictures dictate. Small, but clean and roomy enough for several adults to move around. The kitchen is adequate for preparing meals if you choose to eat in a lot. We brought large pot for spaghetti type cooking for a crowd, but they had a large skillet for pancakes and french toast cooking en-mass.

We put a pontoon on the dock while we were there and there was plenty of room and the dock was very secure; which was great since we were there during a large storm where a tornado hit in Glen Arbor.

My only request would be more wall storage for things like towels, bathrooms supplies, food, etc. A bookcase in a couple areas would allow for more opportunities to unpack clothes and store food. We worked it out, but that would be a cheap upgrade.

All around, we'd definitely come back! The location is convenient to both Leland, Suttons Bay, and Northport. We biked around the lake a few times as well, and it was a good ride (just over an hour).

Thank you!!

Family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at the McNeil cottage in the past and came again this year because it is so comfortable and easy to stay. The setting on the water is perfect for families with and without boats. The water is so shallow that it's easy to allow kids to have fun. The yard is big enough to enjoy bon fires and run around playing games safely at the same time. We have nothing that could even be's perfect for us.

Clean, roomy, comfortable, beautiful area

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was extremely clean and very roomy. There is a huge family room with lots of windows and seating to look out at the lake (Owner should add a picture of this room). The kitchen had enough room to prepare all our meals and was stocked with lots of little extras like foil, spices, cooking spray, trash bags, etc. The gas grill was very clean and cooked our food better than my own grill at home! The bedrooms were small (as expected), but the beds and sleeper sofa were very comfortable. Bathroom was huge for a cottage and the new shower/tub combo was great for bathing young kids. There is a 20 food wide sandy area that goes into the water, but really isn't big enough for kids to dig, play sand castle, etc. If it is windy or speed boats are out, the sandy area gets waves right up to the grass. The weather did not cooperate; it was very windy and cold. And since the lot faces north, very shady in August. The shade and breeze would have been awesome this summer when the rest of Michigan was 100 degrees! I’m sure the sun sets and sun bathing areas would be nicer May-July. Fire pit was awesome and lots of wood was provided. Row boat was a nice extra and we had lots of fun in the morning before it warmed up; the “Narrows” are beautiful. All-in-all it was good time.
