As its name indicates, Piedmont is the land of the mountains: it is surrounded on three sides by the Alps, which here include the highest peaks and the most important glaciers of Italy. Mount Viso, the Piedmont valley of Monte Rosa, and the other peaks offer spectacular landscapes of singular beauty. In this alpine complex, large and picturesque valleys open like the Susa Valley, the Valsesia and the Ossola Valley. The landscape of the Langhe and Monferrato is very different but equally unique: a succession of hills covered with vineyards, dotted with villages and castles. Mirrors of water and rice fields, long streaks of poplars and old farms form the characteristic panorama of these plains that stretch from Novara to Vercelli. Lake Maggiore is the tourist destination par excellence with Stresa and the Borromeo Islands, offering landscapes with magnificent old villas decorated with English parks. But nature is only one of the many centers of interest in Piedmont. This region offers many others: from Turin - the Italian capital of the automobile - with its history and its remarkable artistic heritage, to other cities, and their historic centers such as Cherasco, Alba and Ivrea. And then, the remarkable medieval castles, such as the imposing castle of Ivrea, architectural jewels such as the famous residences of the House of Savoy and the Sacri Monti (Sacred Mounts).
