About the property

Spacious, beautifully-furnished cottage, with new lanai--sleeps 2-3

We are located on the lush, tropical side of the big island, just two miles north of the historic whaling town of Hilo. Our home is in a small, upscale neighborhood in the country and borders the old coastal road that winds past streams, waterfalls, and vine-covered bridges.

Honolii Beach is just a short walk down our one-lane road and has a beautiful picnic area with lifeguards, showers, and bathrooms. Honolii is very popular and has consistent waves year-round for surfers and boogie boarders. The freshwater river that empties into the bay has a huge swimming hole and two beautiful waterfalls just upstream.

Hiking, jogging, bikeriding, surfing, swimming, or just kicking back are activities you can do from the vacation cottage without driving anywhere. Our convenient location also makes it simple to visit the many scenic areas around the island.

And remember, one of the friendliest beaches on this side of the island is just a short stroll down the road

We also have cable TV with 77 channels and free wireless Internet. Boogie boards and snorkel gear are also available. Your privacy is insured, as this is our only rental.

Activities: Activities (on site or nearby): Swimming, surfing, boogie-boarding, fishing, or just relaxing are all activities you can enjoy at Honolii Beach. Bike-riding, jogging, or hiking are perfect activities along the one-lane old Mamaloha Highway that winds several miles past Honolii. Diving, golf, tennis, shopping, restaurants, museums, sightseeing are a five minute drive into town.

Volcano National Park is 45 minutes

About terre hawkins

I teach biology at the University of Hawaii and this is my only rental. It is very important to me that my guests enjoy their stay at my cottage and experience the aloha that I have found on this island.

terre hawkins purchased this cottage in 2002

Guestbook comments from the owner

As owner of the property, I take a personal interest in our guests and the quality of their vacation time in Hilo. The best advertising I have is "word of mouth" from happy guests that have stayed in our only vacation rental.

Thank you.

Great spot off the beaten track.

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed staying here. Just walk a couple of blocks down to the "beach". It's mostly rocks instead of sand but still nice. I hear that sometimes there is a sand beach there but not while we were there. There were several local surfers every time we went down there. It's off the beaten track but very handy to downtown Hilo and other attractions. Enjoyed listening to the frogs at night and the birds in the morning. We were very comfortable there the whole time. It was fun to watch the Geckos on the front porch hunting for bugs. It doesn't have A/C so was a bit warm a couple of evenings but cools off nicely overnight. Terre was really helpful with local restaurants and beaches.

Breezy lovely get away

  • 5 of 5

Terre provided great information before and at the guesthouse. It was lovely and within a walk to a place we could watch the surfers. Lots of exotic sounds at night! We only stayed one night but I could imagine staying here for longer...Thanks!

Budget accommodations near great beach

  • 4 of 5

The studio was as described online. In a nice neighborhood and a quick walk to a beach was a major plus. Appreciated having chairs, boogies board available as well. Bed was a medium comfort level. It was incredibly squeaky to get in and out of. The room needs some TLC. Cosmetically it has seen better days. Oddly enough we had to use the iron and it had rust all over it. Owner was very easy to deal with.

Great place for a great price!

  • 5 of 5

The property was great! It was clean, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our stay. The kitchen was well equipped and the bed was comfortable. Descriptions of the property were accurate and communication with the owner prior to arrival was great. Directions given to the property were detailed and it was easy to find. We would stay there again without question and give it the highest recommendation to others who are considering staying in Hilo.

Map

My vacation rental is located about two miles up the Hamakua Coast , just outside of Hilo town. Our close proximity to Hilo is very convenient for enjoying the amenities the east side of the island has to offer. Honolii Beach is a five-minute walk away and there are multiple attractions within a 15 minute drive such as Akaka Falls, Rainbow Falls, and Hawaii Botanical Gardens. Volcano National Park is only 45 minutes away and the cowboy town of Waimea is approximately one hour up the Hamakua Coast.

Other Activities: Kicking back and having a good time
