We are located on the lush, tropical side of the big island, just two miles north of the historic whaling town of Hilo. Our home is in a small, upscale neighborhood in the country and borders the old coastal road that winds past streams, waterfalls, and vine-covered bridges.
Honolii Beach is just a short walk down our one-lane road and has a beautiful picnic area with lifeguards, showers, and bathrooms. Honolii is very popular and has consistent waves year-round for surfers and boogie boarders. The freshwater river that empties into the bay has a huge swimming hole and two beautiful waterfalls just upstream.
Hiking, jogging, bikeriding, surfing, swimming, or just kicking back are activities you can do from the vacation cottage without driving anywhere. Our convenient location also makes it simple to visit the many scenic areas around the island.
And remember, one of the friendliest beaches on this side of the island is just a short stroll down the road

Relax and enjoy aloha: One of the friendliest beaches on this side of the island is just a short stroll down the one-lane road.
Stay here and discover aloha.
I teach biology at the University of Hawaii and this is my only rental. It is very important to me that my guests enjoy their stay at my cottage and experience the aloha that I have found on this island.
terre hawkins purchased this cottage in 2002
As owner of the property, I take a personal interest in our guests and the quality of their vacation time in Hilo. The best advertising I have is "word of mouth" from happy guests that have stayed in our only vacation rental.
Terre provided great information before and at the guesthouse. It was lovely and within a walk to a place we could watch the surfers. Lots of exotic sounds at night! We only stayed one night but I could imagine staying here for longer...Thanks!
The studio was as described online. In a nice neighborhood and a quick walk to a beach was a major plus. Appreciated having chairs, boogies board available as well. Bed was a medium comfort level. It was incredibly squeaky to get in and out of. The room needs some TLC. Cosmetically it has seen better days. Oddly enough we had to use the iron and it had rust all over it. Owner was very easy to deal with.
The cottage was perfect for stay in Hilo. It was clean, charming and centrally located for all of the adventures we had planned. If you are looking for a cost effective, simple, quiet place to stay in a great location, look no further! The owner was very friendly and accommodating! She even provided us with snorkeling gear to use on our adventures!!
The property was great! It was clean, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our stay. The kitchen was well equipped and the bed was comfortable. Descriptions of the property were accurate and communication with the owner prior to arrival was great. Directions given to the property were detailed and it was easy to find. We would stay there again without question and give it the highest recommendation to others who are considering staying in Hilo.
We enjoyed our last five nights in Hawaii at this large studio apartment. The owner, Terre, who lives next door, is very friendly and checked in with us to see if we needed anything or had questions. It's a nice, safe location outside the hubbub of downtown Hilo. The bed was comfortable and the kitchenette well supplied with what you need as a traveler.
You can walk in five minutes to a really nice black sand beach where surfers are bobbing out in the waves.
it's a great midpoint for touring the east side of the island. We spent two days in Volcanoes National Park, another up in Waipio Valley, and one driving up Mauna Kea -- three completely different -- but all awesome -- experiences. The Hilo Farmers Market is THE place to get your souvenirs on Wed and Saturdays -- a really nice selection from dozens of locally talented artisans. And I got a colorful Hawaiian-made floral shirt for $15 here!
I would stay here again. This nice unit could be a great unit with updating of the brown kitchen & bath cabinets with some colorful bamboo green paint, as well as some minor touches such as new bath towels.
One note: I brought earplugs because I read the other reviews about the coqui frogs and I am a light sleeper. They are quite loud, but I easily fell asleep with the earplugs in. My partner did not wear earplugs and slept just fine!
Enjoy your time in Hilo!
We had a bad experience here. Within 10 minutes arriving here their was a gecko lizard inside the room climbing up the wall. My wife was very disturb that a reptile was inside the the place. She does mind if they are outside but not inside where we are planning to stay. At that time,my wife said she could not stay here for the night and we need to find another place to stay.It was not a easy thing to do on Friday night at 8 p.m. I called Terre and let her know of the situation and she offered to give us 50% of our money back for not spending the night there. My wife just wanted to get out and find a place to sleep.Upon leaving I checked my wife's purse to make sure the lizard was not inside the purse and when I emptied her purse their were a couple of cockroaches coming out of it.Upon returning from my vacation, I texted Terre to request a full refund and she did not respond to two of my texts. Any hotel or any service provider would not charge us for a night we did not stay.We are very disappointed that their a lizard or cockroaches in the place even though it is Hawaii. The other places we stayed in Hilo and Kona had none inside the place. We felt that it is poor customer service of not even responding to our request of a full refund. This was the worst experience we ever had.

My vacation rental is located about two miles up the Hamakua Coast , just outside of Hilo town. Our close proximity to Hilo is very convenient for enjoying the amenities the east side of the island has to offer. Honolii Beach is a five-minute walk away and there are multiple attractions within a 15 minute drive such as Akaka Falls, Rainbow Falls, and Hawaii Botanical Gardens. Volcano National Park is only 45 minutes away and the cowboy town of Waimea is approximately one hour up the Hamakua Coast.
Other Activities: Kicking back and having a good time
