We are located on the lush, tropical side of the big island, just two miles north of the historic whaling town of Hilo. Our home is in a small, upscale neighborhood in the country and borders the old coastal road that winds past streams, waterfalls, and vine-covered bridges.
Honolii Beach is just a short walk down our one-lane road and has a beautiful picnic area with lifeguards, showers, and bathrooms. Honolii is very popular and has consistent waves year-round for surfers and boogie boarders. The freshwater river that empties into the bay has a huge swimming hole and two beautiful waterfalls just upstream.
Hiking, jogging, bikeriding, surfing, swimming, or just kicking back are activities you can do from the vacation cottage without driving anywhere. Our convenient location also makes it simple to visit the many scenic areas around the island.
And remember, one of the friendliest beaches on this side of the island is just a short stroll down the road

Relax and enjoy aloha: One of the friendliest beaches on this side of the island is just a short stroll down the one-lane road.
Stay here and discover aloha.
I teach biology at the University of Hawaii and this is my only rental. It is very important to me that my guests enjoy their stay at my cottage and experience the aloha that I have found on this island.
terre hawkins purchased this cottage in 2002
As owner of the property, I take a personal interest in our guests and the quality of their vacation time in Hilo. The best advertising I have is "word of mouth" from happy guests that have stayed in our only vacation rental.
This huge studio couldn't have been in a better location. It is 2 minutes from the beach, 2 minutes to the town of Hilo, and easy to find - 2 turns off the main road.
There was a bit of noise from the road but it was quickly drowned-out by the coqui frogs after sunset. We enjoyed relaxing on the front porch before dinner and loved the visits by the cat and dog! We had dinner at Pineapples and the Hilo Bay Club - both were very good.
Don't miss the farmers market in Hilo - we got fresh local produce and lunch. Wednesdays there is an expanded arts and crafts type market right next door - we picked up great unique souvenirs at bargain prices.
If we ever get the chance to return to the Hilo area we would definitely stay with Terre again.
We loved our time in this well-appointed comfortable cottage. You have everything you need to enjoy your stay. The neighborhood is friendly and the homes are beautifully landscaped. Morning walks to the beach to watch the sun rise from the ocean. Surf or sit beachside and watch the show. Screens on all the windows so the cottage is bathed in ocean air. Close to town for dining. Terre is a joy. Loved it.
We stayed here for 3 nights in between Kona and Volcano. Terri was wonderful to work with and went out of her way to make sure we were settled and had what we needed. The property is clean and has everything you need to be comfortable. The neighbourhood is very nice and the nearby beach is pretty. Great location to explore the area and its beauty from.
Nice neighborhood, and walk down to parallel street closer to beach, and then steep steps down to open green park to right, and rocky beach straight and to left is great view. It appears to be a surfing beach, and pretty crowded during daytime,so best not to try parking car on this narrow road above beach. I walked beach later in day during a brief rainfall, and the rocks were slippery. The view once one gets to far left and under bridge, where there is a sandbar is incredible. You see very high gulch from sandbar, where I think three streams converge. Open breezy studio never got hot with ceiling fan. Great vantage point from which to visit volcano area, or go up the road instead towards Laupahoehoe pt park etc.
My husband and I were very pleased with our stay here, the accommodations were spacious and clean and the owner extremely helpful. It's also very easy to get to some side roads that give you a true taste of "old Hawaii." A very good value for people wishing to explore this side of the island. Recommended!
Have gotten tired of the hotels in Hilo every time we come here, so have started using vrbo to find new places to stay. This one is the best. Very convenient to downtown Hilo, yet away from all the hustle and bustle. There is a nice walk right by the cottage where you can see some waterfalls and just get away. Cottage is well equipped if you want to eat in or just relax. Terre freely gives info about the area and all were spot on. Very glad we found this place. Hope it's available the next time we visit. A no brainer to stay here.
My vacation rental is located about two miles up the Hamakua Coast , just outside of Hilo town. Our close proximity to Hilo is very convenient for enjoying the amenities the east side of the island has to offer. Honolii Beach is a five-minute walk away and there are multiple attractions within a 15 minute drive such as Akaka Falls, Rainbow Falls, and Hawaii Botanical Gardens. Volcano National Park is only 45 minutes away and the cowboy town of Waimea is approximately one hour up the Hamakua Coast.
