About the property

3 bedrooms, 1 full bathroom, 1 half bathroom, 1 additional shower room, sleeps 6

A century old, this colonial is spacious and comfortable. In 2002, it was totally rewired, repainted and newly furnished. In 2012 we replaced the flooring in the kitchen and shower room and installed a new shower. In 2013, we added a dishwasher to make life easer. The shaded yard is a pleasant place to barbeque and relax around the picnic table. Located 3 miles from downtown Bar Harbor and just a mile from the entrance to Acadia National Park. There is a path that leads to a circular road through the woods with ocean views--great for strolling, jogging. Plenty of parking in front of the barn.

On the first floor there is a full kitchen with a small island & stools for breakfasting, a full dining room, living room with cable TV & DVD player, full bathroom, bedroom with queen bed, & an additional shower room. Upstairs there is a half bath, master bedroom with king size bed, & a third bedroom with two twin beds. We provide dishes & flatware, pans & utensils, sheets, blankets & towels. There is a washer & dryer in the basement.

Recreation & Nature: : Climb, swim, kayak, canoe, bike, hike. Photograph on guided nature tours in Acadia National Park. Oceanarium, mini golf, full golf, zoo. Take day trips to quaint villages in Maine or overnight to Canada. Century-old reputation as 'America's Most Beautiful Island' and 'Queen of Resorts'.

Dining, Shopping, Boating: : Approximately 100 restaurants and shops within 5 miles. Most restaurants offer lobster. Good value by city standards. Friendly shops and outstanding craft and art galleries. Many forms of ocean boating: slow sunset sails, whale watches, guided sea kayaking, trips on lobster boats or video-dive boat, private charters.

Important: Certificate of Occupancy.: Starting in 2007, Bar Harbor requires town certification of summer rental properties. Our property is certified. As you shop among properties, be certain to ask about the property's certification--to avoid a cancellation at the last minute. If you have to cancel, we immediately put your week back on the market and refund your outlay after someone else rents. There is no automatic penalty, but with a late cancellation there is a chance that no one will be found to replace your family. Thankfully, cancellations are rare.

About Paul DeVore, retired anthroploogist and shopkeeper--now poet

On a one-week vacation to Bar Harbor in 1976, We fell in love with the Town and National Park. We signed a lease on a small shop--and never returned to Boston. A frequent fantasy of visitors; We were lucky enuf to make it work. For 25 years We owned Boston Baked Beads, The Dancing Deer &The Blue Heron Shop. We grew up living sweetly in small towns, but none was as beautiful as this one.

Paul DeVore, retired anthroploogist and shopkeeper--now poet purchased this farmhouse in 2001

Why Paul DeVore, retired anthroploogist and shopkeeper--now poet chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

This was one of the first houses built in the village of Hulls Cove in the Township of Bar Harbor--the first cove out from the downtown. Tho it has now been thoroughly updated, the sturdy and angular old two-story farmhouse offers a charm not readily found in the modular houses of recent decades. The driveway circles around an ancient maple tree. And a pathway behind the barn leads to a private wooded roal perfect for strolling or jogging.

A charming stay

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at The Farmhouse. It provided the comfort of a spacious older house. The location is more convenient than we realized at first. When we felt like napping or cooking, our boys only had to cross the road and flag down the free shuttle to make a jaunt to Sand Beach. The wooded roadway beyond the barn was great for walking the dog. Thanks for providing everything we needed.

Old, worn out, no charm

  • 1 of 5

Peeling wall paper scotched taped to the wall

Linoleum curling up at the corners

Duct tape shelf fences in the fridge

Scary shower

Pictures and decor - garage sale special

'mud room' full of junk

Piles of junk heaped up behind the house

Toilet that doesn't flush

Holes in the wall, stuffed with insulation

Generally unfinished, poorly reconstructed

Replacement windows improperly installed so they don't close right

Some windows without closing hardware

I could go on....and on

Lots of age without the charm.

Very disappointing.

Owner's Response: Mr. K renovates old houses--perhaps not as old as the Farmhouse. He appears to have felt personally offended by what we amateurs settle for...and exaggerates a bit to make his points. Yes, there are a couple of wallpaper seams upstairs that have curled back slightly. We chose to tape them down rather than remove all the antique wallpaper. We couldn't figure out what a 'scary shower' is. The 'junk' in the mud room consists of vacuum cleaner, mop, bucket, brooms and other household tools used by the cleaning crew. When we went to the property to see about 'piles of junk behind the house', we found and removed a trash barrel that had been run over and flattened. The balky toilet flushes just fine when we try it. The 'holes in the wall' consist of a single hole where a wood-burning cooking range was vented 100 years ago. The outer edge is weatherproof, and the inner part is filled with non-flammable insulation. He seems particularly upset with the windows; although no one else ever has mentioned them. We don't pay much attention to 'closing hardware' here; many people don't even lock their doors. Happily, it's that kind of island village. Apparently, Mr. K did not notice that the father and son that built the stairs long ago, wound up with sizes that vary by fractions of an inch. We find that sort of thing charming. Anyhow, he found no fault with the lawn, grill, beds, chairs, dining table, entertainment center, wifi service, laundry, kitchen appliances, linens or other supplies.
