Clean, comfortable and family oriented cottage on the Big Island's Hamakua Coast in Pepeekeo. Built with love, pride and Aloha, this cottage is set in a private, peaceful, serene and airy environment. Fully equipped kitchen with custom kitchen and bath cabinets, dining and living area and outdoor patio makes for a great place to relax and enjoy the pleasures of your stay in Hawaii. Enjoy views of the blue ocean and majestic mountain top of Mauna Kea by day and amazing stars and, at times, breathtaking full moon and moon lit ocean by night. Short walk to the coastline, biking and nature walks abound. There's a stream adjacent to our property with a neat swimming spot. When the timing is right, you'd be treated to the tastiest bananas you've ever eaten! Truly! If you have kids, there's plenty of yard space for them to run, play catch or enjoy a family outdoor game of frisbee. A short 5-minute drive will take you to the cute town of Honomu, enroute to famous Akaka Falls. If you want to enjoy breakfast out, there's 100% Hawaiian grown coffee and a wide selection of healthy yet tasty breakfast menu items at Shark's in Honomu, my favorite breakfast place!
Just 10 miles north of Hilo, our cottage is close to major attractions in Hilo and allows for short drives to other popular sites such as Volcano National Park, Botanical Gardens and surfing spots. Location also makes for easy day trips to attractions on the north and west side of the Big Island, such as Waipio Valley, Hapuna Beach and the towns of Honokaa, Waimea and Kailua-Kona. Pack a picnic with the coolers supplied in the cottage. When you're done exploring and just want to relax, simply pull up the patio chairs and table, open a bottle of cold beer or have a glass of wine and set your eyes on the stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. To top it off, why not have a barbecue? Just get your favorite beef, chicken or fish...and all the fixings and you'd be on your way to a lovely, delicious and relaxing evening in paradise!
Check in time is 3pm. We'd be happy to accommodate early check in if possible.

Aloha and Welcome!
This was our fifth time renting a place in Hawaii and by far the Cottage by the Sea was the best.
Everything was very new and clean, a great value for the price. It is located in a very quiet area of new homes separated by acres of former sugar cane fields. The hosts, Yu Yok and Mike were very fiendly and helpful. They respected our privacy and we respected the fact that this was a family area.
The cottage location is in a fantastic location to explore old Hawaii. Just a short drive south into Hilo for the Farmer's Market. Our return from Hilo usually was by the scenic drive. Look for the "4 Mile Scenic Route" sign on the ocean sidea. The scenic drive ends just a short distance away from the cottage.
Most of our time we explored places norith of the cottage driving the Old Mamalahoa Highway and side roads to discover some beautiful areas. We visited many of the state parks in this area and old plantation towns. Many days our plans changed as we discovered another beautiful area to explore.
Some unexpected sightseeing came from the cottage views. Rise early in the morning to watch cruise ships pass by with all their lights and great sunrises. On a clear day look out the bedroom windows to see the snow on the top of Mauna Kea. For three days we were reminded that the cottage is a place to relax and take it easy, that was the time it took a Giant East African Snail to make its way from the front to the back of the patio.
We enjoyed our stay and hope to return next year.
My family and I stayed here for a while and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! This place is comfortable, clean and is great as a home base for our many other activities on this island. We especially love the great serenity and beautiful views! The owners are very respectful of our privacy and always willing to offer recommendations or answers to our questions. Great value! Highly recommended! We're looking forward to coming back!
My husband and I visited the Big Island a few years ago and stayed on the Kona side. For this trip, we decided to stay on the Hilo side.
Jasmine was easy to work with and responsive to inquiries and questions. Her directions to the property as well as her advise on where to stock up on groceries were easy to follow.
The property was beautiful! I loved watching the sunrise over the ocean every morning.
The house was as presented. I appreciated having a gated, secure entry. There was a great selection of guide books and maps, which made finding things to do easy.
Overall, it was a great stay!
The cottage is very clean and well-organized.. Everything We want to use is equipped. Small kitchen has all commodities to cook except food. Bed linen is clean. Floor surface is wooden. not carpet. Absolutely clean..Jasmine told us the cottage was built for her parents to visit.. What should I describe more about house? Specially We liked small shoe rack next to entrance door so we can take off shoes to make floor keep clean..It`s asian style.. We stayed for 2 nights but wished to stay more. It`s little bit far from downtown Hilo. It takes 15 min drive downtown Hilo. Except this, Overall fully satisfied..
We have family who live near Hilo but who can't house guests from the mainland at the moment. Jasmine and Mike are very gracious and it was especially helpful to have an ample stock of basics...coffee filters, tissues, paper towels, etc., etc. Leave your guidebooks behind - there is a thorough library to use while in residence. As everyone says the cottage is very peaceful and it is fun to see the cruise ships pass by just after sunrise and again just after sunset. A lovely location for a fair price. Highly recommended.
Situated not far from Hilo, the growing town of Pepeekeo is one of former sugar plantation towns along the Hamakua Coast which features awesome views of the pristine blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. This is a great location to explore the history of Hawaii, taste the wonders of tropical fruits, and indulge yourselves in various exciting outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, canoe paddling, snorkeling and surfing. A short drive will bring you and your family to many 'must go to' visitor sites such as the Volcano National Park, the black sand beach, the Imiloa Astronomy Center (which has a great planetarium and lots of interactive devices to engage both adults and children), the Pacific Tsunami Museum, Hilo Famer's Market, Akaka Falls, Botanical Gardens and a whole lot more! Cottage is also near other parks, shopping mall, major grocery stores, theatres, banks, restaurants, churches and golf courses. All of our guests have been pleased with their stay here.
Other Activities: canoe paddling, golfing, fishing, jogging, biking
