West Tisbury House Rental Photos and Description

3 bed rooms, sleeps 6+ 1 bathroom, outdoor shower

The open land around Tisbury Great Pond is exceptional. It’s low, wide, and alive with wildlife, and the sound of surf rolls in across the landscape. It’s a different climate within a mile of the ocean.

The pond offers an endless supply of activities & places to explore. The ocean beach at “the cut” is the best.

Our small summer “camp” as they used to be called, sits on 3.7 acres of mostly untouched land; nature unimproved! There are decks on three sides of the house; you look south over Middle Point Cove, across Long Point to the ocean. On the other side of the Middle Point, you look west across the main pond to South Beach, Chilmark, and the layered hills up-island.

The sun on the land brings a distinctive smell of berry bushes, which moves, gently through the house. This is a place to reconnect, and be at peace.

Everything else that makes a great Vineyard vacation is not far away.

House: The house is a pretty open plan, the living room and dining room are open to the roof. You can see up into the loft which covers the two bedrooms, bath and kitchen. There are three big, 45' wide, doors that mostly stay open in nice weather latched to the outside of the house.

Yard: Besides the decks on three sides of the house, there's a yard and an area with a vegetable / herb garden and the outdoor solar shower. The rest of the property is a mix of native huckleberry, blueberry, choke cherry, cedar, scrub oak, with accents of poison ivy! You'll see ospreys, swans, hawks, geese, and many smaller birds. You may see deer, otters, raccoons, etc if you're up early. There are fresh deer tracks on the dirt road almost every day.

Pond: Tisbury Great Pond is one of the largest ponds on the island, about a mile across, and 2+ miles up some of the coves. Deep Bottom Cove is like a river at the upper end with small camps along the water. Out at the beach, there are extensive sand flats to play on, the water is warm and shallow for little ones, and there's body surfing on the ocean side. If 'the cut' is open, you can ride in, or out, depending on which way the tide is going; magical.

Why Alexander Moore chose Martha's Vineyard

We built this house in 1977, borrowing from, and respectful of the local architecture. The buildings were mostly hunting shacks, and summer 'camps' at the time. It is 2.3 miles down dirt roads with no electricity, no one was thinking year round houses at the time. The road is better, they brought a telephone line down, and we have some solar electricity now. West Tisbury has 3 acre zoning, and most people built small so the land is pretty native, not too manhandled.

What makes this house unique

Because it's somewhat unobstructed out to the ocean, gentle air moves through the house, not always so gentle, but different than just gusts on a windy day. There's always a freshness about the air, and the sound of the waves from south beach is soothing.

Indelibly Wonderful Place

  • 5 of 5

Rent this if you want a Vineyard place that has the real feeling of the island. I have been there 4 or 5 times, and I hesitate to submit a review because I like the idea of it being just mine, but that’s not reality. So… to the place itself: it has always been spotlessly maintained, and the responsive and friendly owner comes from generations of Vineyard experience. Fifteen minutes down a sandy unpaved road you arrive at the house, surrounded by oak and huckleberry with a flowering garden. Up to the deck and inside the wide doors, you enter the main room, ringed by windows and comfortably furnished, a dining table for eight or so, built-in couches and an ingeniously designed kitchen. The house is well thought out and everything seems falls right to hand when you want it. Walls have hidden closets and the queen-size beds are nestled into the two downstairs bedrooms; you sleep to the sound of surf from South Beach and wake to views aligned towards the ocean or into the forest. The loft with two twin beds is bright and fresh with plenty of room. The kitchen is stocked with all you need for serious cooking, if that is your thing. The decks have great views and furniture. There’s an outdoor shower for summer days, and a nice indoor bathroom with full tub and shower too. One year I went in the fall, and the wood stove keeps the whole house warm. The solar power system provides ample juice, even through the night with lighting and power to charge gizmos but not for high wattage devices like a hair dryer. There’s a landline phone and cell coverage, but otherwise, you’re off the grid. To go down island for restaurants or whatnot, its @ a 15 minute drive to Edgartown, once drive get back out the dirt road to the main road; Alley’s General Store with basic groceries and local produce is even nearer. We also go up island to the fishing hamlet of Menemsha for lobsters, swordfish or oysters. Back at the house we paddle the canoe or kayaks into coves past swans and cormorants or across the Great Pond to the miles-long South Beach. Barring a longish walk, this part is only reachable by boat, so it always feels private. If you’d rather drive to a beach, the one at Long Point Wildlife Refuge is @15 minutes away. Swimming or lounging at the nearby pond beach is 150 paces. This place is not for being near the honkytonk or the yacht harbors, but if you want a real vacation with peace and beauty, this is it. Go.

Amazing Vineyard rental!

  • 5 of 5

Up island on the Tisbury Great Pond, this is one of those hidden gems that people keep coming back to year after year. We have been coming here for five years. Some of the things that keep us coming back? Waking up to the tranquil sounds of nature, drinking coffee on the deck overlooking the salt-water ponds, walking or kayaking to the barrier beach or Long Point, and sailing on Tisbury Great Pond just to name a few. Even though this house is off-the-grid, it has everything you might need except for a washer/dryer which is a small price to pay for the location. It's on the water and a short drive to the farmers market or Chilmark general store (for the best pizza on island). Centrally located, it's a relatively easy drive to any of the other towns on island. The owner is very prompt if any questions or issues arise and the house is clean and well maintained. Check out the pictures - it may look small but with the large outside decks and the beaches so close by, it doesn't feel small. If you're into a relaxing Vineyard vacation away from the crowds this is definitely the place for you!
