We used to live in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, and always travelled to the Florida Keys to vacation and dive. We decided that if we could ever pull it off, we would buy our own piece of paradise on the water in the Keys, so for us this is a deam come true!

Benefits are location! The Lower Keys are more laid back than the Upper Keys, but if you want the party atmosphere with great restaurants and night life, museums and tourist attractions, Key West is only 20 minutes away!

We really enjoyed our stay at your beautiful home in Venture Out! We loved that you are close to Key West for a night on the town, but far enough away in a safe gated community to be quiet at night when we want quiet! The pool and hot tub are both wonderful, and so close to the unit. Our favorite thing to do is to sit up on the deck for happy hour in the evening or for coffee in the morning, and look at the wonderful openwater view off the deck overlooking the ocean. We also loved the kayaks you provide for your guest to use at no charge. Thanks so much for letting us rent your home! We will be back next year!

This is a three star property

We had positive and negative highlights of our stay in Cudjoe Key. And please note we have stayed at over 20 properties, represented by about 5 different services, over the last 20 years.

All of our issues were reported to the management company and they were mostly rectified. The floors were very dirty when we arrived. As I cleaned the place it appeared that no one had cleaned under the furniture such as the bed, sofas and chairs. The closet we were able to access in the Master Bedroom was filled, and I do mean filled, with blankets, sheets, cushion covers for furniture which didn't exist, a broken end table, pillows, and other items. Luckily we weren't using the second bedroom so we just stacked all the stuff in there. The second bedroom closet did have some room in it but was not empty. Light bulbs were missing. Light bulbs were out - six or seven in total. The gas grill was only working on one side and there was a lot of grease in the bottom so we were concerned about a grease fire. The property managers did clean the gas grill and then the second half didn't work so it was replaced. In a response to a previous review, the owners said the place had been renovated. But laminate, or whatever it was, was pealing off some of the kitchen counters. And the television was totally unplugged in the master bedroom which we finally figured out and then we set it up.

On the positive side, it was a great view and the house was laid out well. The bathrooms were in good shape and the management company was very responsive.

I didn't revisit the web site for this property but I believe I remember a scarcity of reviews. And not all of them positive. Considering how popular this area is, I would have expected more - pro or con. I'll be much more sensitive to reviews in the future.

If Homeaway is reading this, this might be able to explain how this property is considered owner managed when the owners live in Canada and they have hired a management company in Florida to manage the property.

Owner's Response: Thank-you for your review! You mentioned you thought that the floors were dirty. We pay professional cleaners to go through the home after each guest, and we pay a professional management company to come in behind them and double check that our home is spic and span, and ready for the next guest. This being said, I addressed this with the management company who said that when they they came over to check on this, it had been a few days already that you were there, and as you had been wearing shoes in the house for a few days, it does make the floors dirty. (We usually take our shoes off to keep the sand and dirt to a minimum). Our management company did address this with the cleaners however and apparently this was a substitute cleaner - not the usual person, so it is possible that the cleaning was not done as well as it usually is. In the master closet, there are extra sheets and blankets for guests who use the hide-a-bed in the living room, as well as extra blankets in case someone is cold. The broken end table - likely a guest broke it and did not tell us , and just put it in the closet with blankets covering it up. There is no reason for a broken end table to be in the closet - we will have the management throw it out. I also asked them about light bulbs. Normally this is always checked as well, but a light bulb can go at any time, as everyone knows. They said they took 2 bulbs over, not 6 or 7. The TV being unplugged in the master bedroom - who knows why the last guest unplugged it, but it is not really very difficult to plug in a tv. Gas grill - you are the first guest who has said that only half of it was working, but this was quickly remedied with a new grill for you. Our home was renovated a year ago with new flooring, furniture, and paint. We did not put in new cupboards, and the finish was not peeling when we were there last. We will have this checked out and repaired. There are over 20 reviews on our property - most of them 4 to 5 star. I do not bother people for reviews after they leave - I feel this is totally up to them. There are many many properties who's owners hire management companies if they do not live close to their properties. This is for the benefit of our guests so that someone is there to quickly take care of any issues that come up.

It's ok

This house is ok, that's probably the most I can say. The view from the deck is beautiful, the best feature. For the cost, the decor is tired and in need of updating, although I realise that all accommodation in the Keys is overpriced and less smart than other areas of Florida. Part of the Keys charm maybe...?Beware of the realty agents - we were subject to some strange shenanigans when we were e mailed with less than 48 hours notice to be told our booking was being cancelled (yes really!!) due to faulty air condition - apparently irreparable in time for our stay. We were told they could offer one alternative accommodation that was not big enough for our family and lacked all the extras such as tv, wifi, waterfront location that we'd booked. Unfortunately the owner had a 'nothing I can do' attitude and just told me to sort it with the realty company. After several heated conversations and 11 attempts to phone the agent after they failed to call me back, I was notified that it had miraculously been repaired after all...Much as we are grateful to be reinstated to the property I am sure there was an agenda lurking there somewhere, just not sure what it was...As I said, beware.

Owner's Response: Hello Mandy! I have to say that I am totally surprised by your review! First of all, we did a total update less than 2 years ago - living room furnishings are all new, floors throughout are new, mattresses are new, etc. We have had many compliments on the updates that were done. Price-wise - we have not raised the price once since we purchased the unit n 2008. If you want high priced accommodations just go to Key West - 20 minutes down the road. The air conditioner did break just prior to your arrival, as any a/c can. To be on the safe side, the property managers found you another place to stay nearby in the same resort, as the a/c technician was having difficulty getting the parts he needed. He had told our property managers that it was very unlikely he would have everything working by the time you arrived. Parts and ac units sometimes take time to repair in the Keys, as it is not a big city and supplies have to be shipped in. I called the a/c person myself, to see if he could somehow expedite things so the unit would be ready for you in time, and told him that although I realized it was the busiest time of the year for a/c guys, could he please please do his best and let me know the second he got the unit working so you could stay. Mandy - I did not even speak to you at the time - I only spoke to the a/c technician and to the property mangers to let them know to contact you and that if it was not too late to keep your reservation, our unit was ready for you. (The a/c guy went the extra mile to get this done after I called him and begged.) I am very sorry if you had any conversations that were heated or where someone did not call you back - these were not with me. I am going to address this with the management company to see what their side on this is. There is no excuse for not responding, other than the week prior to your arrival is the very business week of the year in the Keys - mini-lobster week. If the unit was miraculously repaired its because I really pushed the AC technician to work overtime to get it done in time for you. No agenda Mandy - what would have been far worse would have been to not have had the unit repaired in time and had no alternate accommodations ready for you. The alternate unit that was ready for you in case we could not have ours repaired in time was the only unit available with short notice, but in the end we pushed hard and and all was well. Thought you would be pleased...take care...Jan

It is difficult with beds as what is comfortable for one person is not for the next person - even a husband and wife often disagree! It was perfect!

We rented this home because it was close to key west. It was just perfect! The resort had a very nice pool, a place in the ocean to swim, tennis courts and a small store and was on a canal that lead to the ocean. It was very secure, clean and quite. I had occasion to talk to a neighbor and her friends and they were very helpful and friendly. The house had everything we needed and was very comfortable. I really can't say enough good things!

Great option for fishing the Keys

We opted to stay in this small condo instead of the usual motel. It was a great improvement as it gave us a common area to hang out during the downtime. The porch is great with a great view.

Good choice for parties of 4 or less.

Needs new beds! Most uncomfortable for the price!

I have just returned from this property, and had my first good nights sleep in 5 days! It is a lovely house and Venture Out has great amenities, unfortunately the house is seriously let down by the sleeping accommodations. At the price we paid for a four night stay, I would expect a decent bed. If this was a hotel I would have demanded a new room! The guest bed is claustrophobic, noisy and very uncomfortable. So much so, that my husband even tried to sleep in the upper bunk! The second night, we tried the equally uncomfortable pull out couch. Mattress is so thin I felt every spring. The next 2 nights were spent on the couches! The broken blinds and lack of air in the guest room, (it only drips large amounts of condensation) just add to the lack of comfort. Both bedrooms have a rather funky smell, we later realized that was probably from the flooring, maybe new? The couple we travelled with said the master bed was not great, but just okay. As I had read all the reviews, I made the comment prior to booking that the negatives were about the beds. As those comments were a year ago, I would have thought they would have been resolved. As they have not, I would not recommend this property as is. Shame, because a few dollars invested would increase the value to match the cost of rental. I don't feel we got our money's worth. There is far too much else available in the same park to settle for the accommodations we had. We looked at other properties during our stay and will enquire about those again next year. By the way, some sharp knives would not go amiss!

Owner's Response: Thank-you for your comments. The unfortunate thing about beds is that what is comfortable for one person, is not comfortable for the next, as everyone likes different mattresses. The master bedroom has a pillow top Sealy mattress that is less than 2 years old. For the bed in the second bedroom, we just purchased less than 6 months ago a pillow top mattress cover, which we were told was very nice. It is however possible that it was too nice, and may have been removed by a guest or by someone else. This we will check into, and if it appears the pillow top mattress cover will not stay in place, we will have to do something else. I have slept in the second bedroom many times myself, and find it comfortable. Our adult daughter also slept on it for 10 days in January, and did not find it uncomfortable. As for the queen sofa bed, it is less than a year old. I have not yet myself ever slept in any pull-out bed anywhere that I would call very comfortable. It is the nature of hide-a-beds. A thicker mattress simply will not fold up into the couch. We were just at our home in January, and there was nothing wrong at all with the air flow anywhere in the home, including the spare bedroom, and at that time there were no broken blinds. I have asked our property manager to check this out and to make any necessary repairs. There is brand new flooring in both bedrooms, installed in January, so that might be what was had a slight "new flooring" aroma to it. This we did not notice ourselves when we were there, but some people are more sensitive to aromas. For the knives, there is an easy-to -use knife sharpener in the kitchen drawer. (Or there was in January). I will also have our property manager check on this, and purchase another one if it has gone astray. Thank-you again for your comments! Sincerely, Jan
