About The Owner

Hi We are Joanie and Dean. We are the owners and managers of the WaterHouse. We both fell in love with our WaterHouse the first time we stepped in the front door! We felt so relaxed and comfortable. We hope you get the same feeling the first time you come in, you will want to come back again and again as we do!

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2006

Why The Owner chose Salem

We chose to buy a vacation house in the City. It's only about 5 miles from where we live! We are both retired, and keep busy with our small seasonal plant nursery. Here we grow our flowers and plants for the WaterHouse. We also keep a few horses for the grandchildren at our house/nursery/farm! So you see, getting too far away takes a lot of work! We find it nice to drive to town, spend the night or two, hang out and relax, but close enough to drive home and care of the animals and come back!

Guestbook comments from the manager

By the second day our little grandson was feeling right at home and especially loved the books and cabinet doors in the kitchen. We all felt comfortable whether gathering in the living room, preparing meals in the kitchen or eating them in the dining room. The house was very clean (a real plus) and well-equipped. We enjoyed the views of the garden from the inside and hope to be there again sometime to fully enjoy your beautiful landscaping. Thank you for providing such a nice home away from home.

Lovely home, perfect for a rainy day!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 4 rainy days over the Thanksgiving week in our "home" in Salem. Joan met us and walked us through her home and made us feel like welcome friends staying for a weekend. Family joined us for the Thanksgiving feast and we were able to find everything we needed to prepare the dinner in a well stocked kitchen and a large enough dining table to fit us all. The rain put a damper on outdoor adventures but the home was cozy enough for visiting and just relaxing. We will definitely return so we can enjoy the outdoors more, both in town and at the house which has an amazing garden area!

This is a very charming house! It was perfect for our family get together!

  • 5 of 5

The house is very well kept and clean and it looks just like the photos. The yard is also beautiful. We enjoyed sitting out on the covered back porch while watching the rain. The location is very convenient to Willamette University (where our daughter is a student) and downtown Salem.

A Lovely Retreat

  • 5 of 5

The Waterhouse is a gem. Located within walking distance of Willamette University and downtown Salem, this quaint and beautifully restored home encourages you to take a breath. After hanging your coat on the coat rack, you'll step through the entry way, wood floors underfoot, old photographs lining the wall, a fireplace ready to roar. Time spent at The Waterhouse feels like a retreat. It is a lovely place to rest. Across the street is a wonderful breakfast place called Word of Mouth Bistro; huge, delicious meals made from scratch are the perfect match to The Waterhouse experience. We will definitely stay there again.

Joanie was great, answered all my questions in a timely manner. The house was clean and beautifully kept. The yard is well maintained. Joanie gave us a list of things to do In the area one of which was to have breakfast at the "Word of mouth" in one word DELISH!!. Sad to leave, but have nothing but good things to say about the house, Salem and surrounding areas.

Fantastic Home and Gardens, Great location

  • 5 of 5

Every year 5 college girlfriends from the mid 70's get together. We choose locations based on activities and sights in the area. We are from Oregon, Washington, California and Nevada. This home was perfect, the kitchen was well outfitted, the gardens were beautiful. It had a nice comfortable living room for late night wine chats, rooms were nicely outfitted and the dining room was a great place to spread out brochures for our next adventure. Joan was wonderful. I highly recommend this property

We are located in the State Capitol of Oregon. Our home is located in the central downtown area. Close to shopping malls, beautiful parks and in the heart of wine country. There are numerous amounts of Wineries in every direction with our home in the middle. There are many antique stores in the area as well as enough to keep a person busy every day of their visit. It's also a very relaxing home to just kick back and relax. We have a large amount of reading books of every kind.

Other Activities: Self guided winery tours and covered bridge tours

Golf: Salem has several beautiful golf courses open to the public located with in a few miles of our home! If you are up to a short drive, there are several dozen courses in the Willamette Valley and Salem, Portland & Eugene areas to choose from, easily reached within an hour. Dean is avid golfer and will be happy to advise you to the type of course your looking for! I am sure you will not be disappointed if you love to golf. From driving ranges to gorgeous courses.
