“…We were blessed to have been able to spend this time in such a special place. It was magical… but more than that it was life-changing. We feel more connected than ever to the beauty of Pt Reyes and to the simple harmony of life that your home and its glorious setting helped us to find once again. Thank you again for all the spirit you put into your home and for your willingness to share it with others.”

“…We were searching for a quiet place to rest and your home was a lovely choice. We especially enjoyed the seamless way the fresh air, light and valley view filled the interior space.”

About Patty Glatt

Patty bought the property in Point Reyes in 1989. She felt like the luckiest person in the world. While working two jobs she spent late nights imagining her 'dream house'. She had never designed anything. After two years of reading about design, principles of kitchen flow, Japanese gardening, and energy efficiency, she presented her plans to a local designer-builder. The home was completed in 1992. The Southwest orientation maximizes views and solar passive energy. The street side remains private with few windows. Two large bedroom suites placed at opposite wings of the home optimizes the view and privacy for all occupants. The central common area is unifying. The open kitchen can accommodate many working simultaneously. The loft is a great place to get away for a nap. As Patty's nephew uses a wheelchair, she designed the doorways and halls wide and the second bathroom is handicap friendly. The master bath indoor-outdoor design pulls you into the garden. Its wrap-around deck overlooks the wetlands facing westward towards the sunset and Inverness ridge. Most visitors spend their time there relaxing, barbecuing as the sun sets, and watching the carpet of stars as the Milky Way sweeps overhead.

Why Patty Glatt chose The Bay Area

Point Reyes is located approximately 22 miles north of San Francisco, in West Marin. Close enough to drive out to for the day, yet remote and authentically rural.

When I moved to Point Reyes in 1987 to practice Family Medicine, I loved that it had postal boxes where neighbors gathered. I still love how all you need can be found within 4 blocks.

What makes this house unique

Located on the Point Reyes Mesa across from Inverness Park. Stroll within a private neighborhood, passing a small pond, Cypress groves, and daffodils. We are located one scenic mile north beyond the town of Point Reyes. A favorite day starts with a morning cup of rich coffee and sticky morning buns from the Bovine Bakery, browsing at the Point Reyes Books independent bookstore, and catching the local farmers market in the Summer and Fall at Toby's Feed Barn. Purchase all else at the local Palace market and the Cow Girl Creamery deli replete with local cheese, oven-baked bread, and pick up some local grass fed organic meats at Sun Farms. Or prepare your lunch in our well stocked kitchen before heading out to the Point Reyes National Seashore Headquarters for a full day's hike. The Point Reyes National Seashore contains unique elements of biological and historical interest in a spectacularly scenic panorama of thunderous ocean breakers, open grasslands, bushy hillsides and forested ridges. Drive out to the Lighthouse stopping along the landscape characterized by spectacular shorelines, dairy farms and over 65,000 acres of wilderness protected by the Point Reyes National Seashore. Head home stopping for fresh mussels and oysters from local shellfish Hog Island farms to grill on the barbecue, or select from fine or casual dining options.

Guestbook comments from the owner

From a writer:I meant to leave you a THANK YOU! note, but I was literally working up until the last minute. Thank you so, so much for lending me your lovely home. What a perfect retreat, so many nooks to tuck into and write . . . and so many flat surfaces to spread out on and organize! And the sun, oh the sun. The way you managed to situate the house so that it gets morning, mid-day and afternoon sun is so impressive. I’d love to visit again with my husband and my daughter when she’s a bit older. She’s a girl who gets very absorbed in things and I can see her spending hours with binoculars identifying various water fowl.

Notes:
Record Player with extensive collection Rock, Jazz, Classical, Folk, Latin American Living room wood floors with substantial surface scratches- some guests are bothered by this. Most look above the floor to the expansive vistas beyond. We are located in the country, and while we try to contain the spider webs that develop inside the house, we do not attempt to control the deck region. Mosquitos are not a problem in our area; we do not have screens on the doors to enable a more seamless indoor-outdoor experience.

Just Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this beautiful home for 2 weeks (9/12/09-9/26/09) and just had a great time. The pictures of the home don't really do it justice: it is really much bigger than the pictures make it look. The home is very close to the wetlands, and the deck in back is just huge. We have 2 very young children (5 months and 4 years) and the house is very kid-friendly.

The location can't be beat -- you're within an hour of San Francisco, Samuel P. Taylor State Park, Sonoma and the Point Reyes National Seashore. Lots of great hikes and walks in the area, organic farms, oyster farms and more -- tons to do and see. The home is about a mile from town, with lots of lightly-traveled streets leading there -- very walker and runner friendly. We walked to town nearly every day. There is a nice grocery in town as well as several restaurants (Station House Cafe is our favorite), and a playground for the kids.

There's wifi available, a great hot tub and a large barbeque grill on the deck. Tons of privacy -- most windows face the rear of the house overlooking the wetlands. While you are in a residential area, you barely know you have neighbors! Plenty of room to move around for all -- kiddos included.

We had a fun vacation and enjoyed ourselves very much. Patty is a gracious host, and we hope to return next year!

Owner's Response: The large deck was built to wrap around the entire backside of the house, which now faces the new Giacomini Wetlands. The hogwire fencing on the deck prevents small children's hands and parts from slipping, while allowing maximal view sights. You can spend hours watching the tide shift, birds drift on swells of draft, and relax knowing your kids are safe. A great house for families of ALL ages. Location! Location! Location! You won't find a better home for the value with this location.

Peaceful paradise

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect location to share a weekend with our French family members as they visited California! The location was not far from downtown... a short run or a leisurely walk through the neighborhoods. We went hiking to see the elk and the beautiful coastline ... next time will have to go kayaking... being able to just sit, read and enjoy all the birds and a fox off the deck was a real treat too!

The owner was available by phone when we had a quick question...

We look forward to going back to this home for another visit in the future !!

Peaceful, beautiful, and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

A superbly well-equipped and maintained - and extremely lovely - home. The photos don't begin to do it justice; it is even more magnificent. The layout of the home is thoughtfully designed. The beautiful, wide, porch wraps around most of the home. There is also a private garden off of one wing. A uniquely tranquil setting. Privacy and serenity and extensive views. An endless parade of wildlife. Quite miraculous. A perfect way to experience Point Reyes. We hope to return. Thank you to our hosts for sharing their very special home with us.

Million Dollar location - Poor Condition

  • 2 of 5

The location is stunning and the neighborhood is the best but the condition of the home did not meet our expectations. The property is "used" and needs to be refreshed. The deck was not welcoming as it was very easy to get splinters. The general condition of the kitchen was such that I felt compelled to wash dishes before using them. The food processor was inadequate, the salad spinner broken in many places. No blender top - just the bottom. The linens were dried with fabric softener and so had that undesirable sweet smell. When I pay a substantial amount of money per day for a rental I expect it to be in better shape. All of that said, Point Reyes is a wonderful place and we will visit the area again. Hopefully the owners will understand that their location warrants a home that's in better condition.

Egrets Overlook

  • 4 of 5

Stunning views of the wetlands. The wildlife is so beautiful and plentiful.

This home is truly about the views. The house itself is comfortable, but in need of a bit of TLC.

The music collection had us reminiscing about our youth! Such a fantastic collection!!!

This was the first vrbo we have stayed in that didn't have any condiments in the refrigerator or foil, saran wrap or zip locks. The BBQ is an old Weber that should be replaced with Gas to cut down on fire from hot sparks. ( Just a thought).

Again, we would stay here again for the views and the music!

Owner's Response: Both of thesr issues were matters we consciously considered. Our listing discloses that we have a charcoal grill. We prefer the taste of charcoal, but as a practical matter there is no convenient mechanism for a ensuring a gas tank would always be full for guests. This would likely generste more complaints about the insufficient gas supply. You can always get charcoal in Point Reyes Market, but propane not so easily. We used to have condiments but guests took this to mean they could leave anything they wanted in the frig when they left. That became a problem. Some complained it was unhygenic to use opened containers. So we decided a clean fresh refrigerator was the better option.

We love coming to the area for the cool weather, great food, rugged shores and incredible views

  • 5 of 5

The house is big, clean and bright with an open kitchen, large deck and a comfy sofa and table where you can simply stare out and watch the stars until the fog blankets the sky. Lots of room here for friends and family to meet and enjoy all the activities around Point Reyes, Inverness and of course oysters in Marshall.
