Zen del Mar – A Mayan red spacious 7,500 square foot Villa has SEVEN large King bedroom-suites with five Mayan-marble bathtubs. Architect Udi Saly and designer Liz Conover renovated Zen in 2014 adding two grand Penthouse suites. Celebrities and Sports stars return to Zen del Mar for its direct ocean front privacy and superior guest services.
Zen del Mar can comfortably accommodate 14 to 18 guests. Zen del Mar may also be rented with its adjacent Villa, Casa del Sol Naciente on Jade Bay for larger groups.
Both villas are located between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Jade Bay is a private oasis of personal Villas and an easy beach walk into the town of Akumal.
Zen, a walled estate from the small street, welcomes you with its handmade double hardwood doors. One enters the Villa with its imposing stone archway highlighting a glass window that soars 35 feet for its picture perfect view of the Caribbean Sea. Zen del Mar captures all Ocean views by subtle elevation and angle plays so everyone has a room with a great ocean view. The Living room, with two couches, opens up to a large exterior patio adjacent to the 60 foot long swimmers swimming pool. A Palapa style structure sits above the pool for double private massages or a yoga practice. The Dining room, Granite Kitchen and one King bedroom en-suite are located on the first floor. There are two dining areas, one inside and a large al fresco patio table with its covered roof providing views of both the garden and the Sea.
Up the wooden handrail you will find a balcony overlooking the garden and four King Bedrooms with bathrooms and bathtubs en-suite. A large ocean front private balcony adjoins the bedrooms so you can enjoy your Mexican coffee from your wooden lounge chairs. As global nomads, the owners made sure that each bedroom has its own design personality and is beautifully appointed with fine European linens and towels. Enjoy the books, movies and accessories chosen from their travels around the world as these are seldom found in a beach house
Two King Penthouse bedrooms at 1000 sq. feet and 1500 sq. feet occupy the top floor. Each room has a panoramic view of the Ocean, bathroom en-suite with a Mayan bathtub, shower and Mayan hammocks.
Akumal in Mayan means place where the turtles are born and Jade is one of their favorite beaches. Zen del Mar has a swinging bed on ropes nestled under a Palapa at the oceans edge, it is a coveted spot for reading a book or an afternoon nap.

We first came to Cancun as harried New York City executives seeking a weekend escape full of sun and sand. On each trip we drove further and further south, eventually falling in love with the area now called the Riviera Maya.
Seeing a piece of property for sale on the beach, we used our dental floss to measure out the length of the site we wanted. We decided to buy it and proceeded to design and furnish our dream house. Since we both had demanding careers, we agreed to rent out our villa several times a year to a few friends.
That was a decade ago. Since then, we have designed and built 10 other villas nearby for people who have similarly fallen under the Mayan spell. Many guests who have rented our villas have become friends — and then fellow villa owners themselves.
As visitors and now part-year residents of this magical place, we are deeply committed to sustainable tourism. We are only too aware that in this place of great beauty, rich culture and natural wonder, many people struggle to make a living, and the environmental balance itself is threatened. The very name 'Akumal' means 'place of the turtles' — creatures that are, sadly in danger of extinction. .
The Owner purchased this villa in 2005
The Villa is stunningly beautiful- spacious bedrooms and bathrooms and plenty of space to lounge inside or out. The grounds and pool are gorgeous. The staff is attentive to your every need. We had a fabulous week- 6 parents and 9 big kids ages 17 to 24. Everyone loved the house and wants to return!
Zen Del Mar is a colorful and beautifully designed beachfront home that easily accommodated our family of thirteen, ages two to eighty. Different seating areas even allowed teenagers to have their own space.
The swimming pool was heaven for little ones and the scuba and snorkelers enjoyed the ocean and had their choice of cenotes. A local chef prepared excellent meals and the inside and outside staff was the equal of a five-star hotel. Four hours after a fishing afternoon, our tastefully prepared catch was served on the outside patio.
The little town of Akumal is a twelve minute walk on the beach, and the local area had entertainment for all. The owner stopped by several times to make sure we were happy.
We're going to do this again for sure.
If you want top of the line accommodations, look no further. Zen del Mar is a beautiful villa where the owners have paid personal attention to every detail. Our group of ten family and friends (ages 25-65) very much enjoyed our week.
Architecturally Zen del Mar is marvelous. The photos are accurate but pictures cannot convey the overall feeling. It is visually appealing everywhere you look. It also works well for a crowd with plenty of privacy and space to spread out. The bedroom suites are equal in amenities, which was nice for our group of adults. Because the setting is so attractive, we ended up spending more time at the villa than I expected. Planned excursions, especially in the evenings, fell by the wayside in favor of enjoying drinks by the pool, al fresco dinners, and late nights under the stars. It is quite dark at Zen del Mar because of lighting regulations that help the endangered turtles. Being there during turtle nesting season was an additional pleasure.
The food provided by staff and the chef was excellent. We used the chef three times and I highly recommend him. If you are the least bit adventurous, request Yucatan specialties. He provided seafood stuffed chili rellenos in a cream sauce that were as elegant as you’d find anywhere. We also had cochinita pibil (barbequed pulled pork) served in the traditional way, a superb seafood ceviche and fajitas which will please any crowd.
Things that I often find to be lacking at ‘luxury’ rentals are done right at Zen del Mar - towels were large and plentiful; good quality bedding and sheets; nice ceramic dishware; good plumbing. The daytime staff was pleasant and unobtrusive. They were extremely responsive to requests and phoned the managers for anything that they couldn’t take care of themselves.
This is an extraordinary place that we will definitely return to.
Zen Del Mar is an amazing house with a wonderful layout. Tha backyard is beautiful with ample opportunities for enjoying the sun and the shade. The service could not have been better. The breakfast in the morning and the fresh quacamole, salsa, chips and margaritas are not to be missed. The property is very well maintained and the owner was friendly and extremely helpful with activities and restaurant recommendations. We loved Turtle Bay Cafe, La Lunita and Buena Vida. We also loved xel-ha, snorkeling at Dos Ojos and the Tulum Ruins. Our week was wnderful.
We had a lovely week both weather wise and activity wise. Had a chance to fish on a small Panga from the down town fleet. Caught a couple sizable Dorado and your Master Chef cooked them up Veracruz style. Really great. Went to Aktun Chen for a neat tour of the Akumal caves and Cenote as well as Ya Kul for some great snorkeling in that bay.
So thank you for building such a great place. The staff were great and the location excellent.
Our stay at Villa Zen del Mar was in fact a zen experience. We landed in Cancun in May 2014 where a car was arranged to pick us up. It was an easy drive to “Zen” and upon arrival we immediately began to shed the stresses of the prior many months. Any concerns I might have had about sharing a Villa with multi-generations of 12 people were put to rest as the villa and surrounds were better than advertised to accommodate our large group. The pool, the furnishings, and the large kitchen were made for large groups or intimacy – whatever one’s needs – such was the attention to detail throughout the Villa. Very important to us was a level of privacy afforded by retreating to any of the en suite rooms, a secluded spot on the beach or in one of the Adirondack chairs positioned around the Villa to take in the waves and turtle watching (turtles nest here – really amazing to see). I spent many hours swimming and then sitting poolside sipping a delicious cocktail with the freshest fruit, a great view of the sea, and a good book.
After our arrival, the rest of our group of family and friends began trickling in, each immediately kick-starting their retreat with either a very short walk into town, in and around the pool or on the beach. The staff was unobtrusive, seeming to appear whenever needed, were friendly and polite and took great pleasure in taking care of us. The chef services were better than a good restaurant, so we only ate out twice at La Lunita for dinner and the Bakery Café for lunch.
Some of the “parents” were concerned about safety but that was quickly dispelled with security on the street and a few walks around the very peaceful and gentle environment.
While I vow to be tech-free when away, good wifi is essential, and I had connectivity throughout our stay.
I have had great experiences at 5 star resorts but ZEN stands out as one of my best vacations and this was seconded by one and all of our diverse group. There was something for everyone. We will be returning to this Villa next year for two weeks.
Cave diving, scuba diving, archaeological Maya ruins.
