About James Munson

The Munson brothers (Stuart, James, and Chris) spent their summers in the Munson Cottage beginning in 1968. They made lifelong friends, held summer jobs, and came to think of Kennebunkport as their second home. Many extended family members would gather in K-port each summer, spilling over into local hotels to enjoy time together in beautiful Maine. Their father Bob was the heart and soul of the Munson Cottage for decades until his passing in 2011. He would drive up from Virginia each May to ready the house, weed his rock garden and daylilies, and enjoy time with family and friends. He would return in September to enjoy the changing season in Maine and prepare the house to be closed for the winter months. The house continues to be a place for the brothers, their families and friends to gather in the summer to make special memories.

Why James Munson chose Southern Coast of Maine

The Munson Cottage is over 100 years old and has been lovingly maintained by the Munsons for decades. Great care has been taken to retain the charm and character of our summer home. We hope that other families will make the same lifelong memories that we have made at the Munson Cottage with family and friends.

What makes this house unique

Antique cast iron stove in kitchen that still works! We use it to take the chill off the early summer and fall mornings. The large screened porch is always the favorite gathering spot, and the large dining room has plenty of room for the whole gang!

Fun family vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 11 had a great time staying at the Munson Cottage. It is ideally located -- short walk to the beach and a couple restaurants, and town is a quick bike ride or walk away. The house is a charming old farmhouse with plenty of room for a large group. The house is rustic and homey with a fully stocked kitchen.

Owner's Response: So glad your family enjoyed the house and the short trip to town. We love our walks along the river to town and enjoy the water views from the Colony Beach, the Breakwater and Parson's Way.

Enjoyable stay in a rustic home.

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the Munson cottage. Blessed with cool nights with windows open and a fire in the fireplace to start the morning. Easy walk to the Colony hotel and beach, Port Lobster and Mabel's and lovely walk along Ocean Ave. Short drive or longer walk into town. Plenty of bedrooms and beds for a large family and 3 bathrooms , also appreciated for a larger group. Kitchen has all the basics and very well- equipped with every pot, pan, utensil ever needed. Washer and dryer were appreciated with a toddler along. Lovely yard and wonderful screened porch where we spent a lot of time. Definitely would return. James Munson was a great host and very helpful when we needed for a couple of issues.

Wonderful spot for a family vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Our sincerest thanks to the Munson's for sharing their home. This was the perfect spot for our family to meet. With kids in California and Vermont we love to get everyone together whenever possible. This home was so comfortable. Plenty of space for everyone. The kids rooms with 5 single beds and the screened in porch were favorite areas for the little kids. The house and kitchen had everything we could possibly use or want. Beautiful yard and easy walks down to the water. Beautiful beaches in the area and lots of fun things to do in town, trolley ride, lobster cruise and yummy places to eat. It was perfect. Thank you, Cathy and Guy

Club Munson an A+ experience

  • 5 of 5

This will be year 7 renting the Munson Cottage... I love this house- you feel so at home. Having family from Kennebunkport- this house was a home I have always admired from a far and when I saw it was ar rental I had to jump on it.....

Susan and Chris are true class people to deal with, they make the renting experience a pleasant and very easy one.

I cannot express the words I feel when we pull up in the drive- I just feel so at home.....

The house is always so clean and just nestled enough away from all the hussle and bussle from downtown but a nice walk to the beach

Perfect vacation spot for adults as well as children!!!!

A slice of heaven

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed at the Munson Cottage several times and absolutely love love love it! It s like taking a step back in time.

When we arrived there were bouquets of flowers on the beautiful porch where we spent much time relaxing. There are lots of places to take long walks down to the ocean. I hope to visit the Munson cottage again next year!

Good for children and adults!

A true Maine experience!

  • 5 of 5

Just ended my week at the Munson Cottage and wanted to share my expereince. This vacation was a combination of my 50th Birthday and a family reunion and I couldn't have found and chosen a better location. I wanted to give my family a Maine experience and the Munson Cottage delivered just that. If you are looking for everything new and shiny, this might not be the place for you. But if you are looking for a comfortable kick off your shoes relaxing place to to rest your weary head this is it. The true character of the cottage is over whelming. Down to it's wide board pine floors and the wonderful pull rope windows and the most wonderful screened-in porch. The cottage is really quite large even with 12 people roaming around. Having the 3 baths was a real plus.Plenty of towels and linens. This cottage is well maintained and cared for. Working with the Munsons was an added pleasure. They were very informative and extremely helpful. Thank you Susan and Chris for sharing your lovely family cottage. I can't say enough about Kennebunkport and the surrounding communities. Beautiful! Also would recommend the Kennebunk beaches ( get the week parking pass) or find your way down to Drakes Island beach in Wells.PS the back yard is a great place for a real Maine Lobster bake!
