About María Prat
We came to Extremadura from a big city long time ago, looking for direct contact with nature and a different way of life. Since that time we want to share with all nature lovers this treasure, still very unknown but very well appreciated by nature photographers, walkers and birdwatchers.
Why María Prat chose Berzocana
Our location is unique, in the top of a hill the views are stunning. Surrounded by very diverse landscape, in the heart of Villuercas Geopark. Suiteble for monumental tourism, between Guadalupe and Trujillo. For birwatching, between Monfragüe, the big reservoirs and close to the crane´s population. For nature lovers, very pure area, with very low population. Many paths to explore, through different landscapes, reaching vestiges or cave paintings.
What makes this Cottage unique
The location, the birds variaty, the nature and the personal attention. We´ll share with you our knowledge of the area to get a perfect stay according to your interest and hobbies.

comfortable rural accommodation in remote part of Spain
The focus of our holiday was to see and photograph the Vultures and other birds in Monfrague National Park which is an hour or so drive away and well worth seeing. The weather was appalling for much of our stay with wind and driving rain; Maria assured us this was unusual. She was helpful and friendly and the accommodation was comfortable and fairly well equipped for cooking. Internet speed was glacial which was perhaps a reflection of the remoteness of the site. We had a great view over Berzocana which you can walk down to very quickly, although in April nothing was open and I'm not sure if there would be much more going on in the summer.
I imagine it would be a delightful place to stay in good weather. We may come back!
Amazing location and lovely chalet
We stayed here in August with out 2 boys (6 and 8) and we loved it. The chalet had everything we needed and had a lovely balcony overlooking the mountains for breakfast. Maria was extremely helpful and told us where to find river swimming pools to beat the heat, as well as secret walks and the best wildlife spotting sites. We had an amazing time and were sad to leave. Thank you.
Beautiful view and very nice owners!
We stayed in a 4 person cottage and had a fantastic view on the village Berzocana and it's surroundings. The cottage was very comfortable and contained all the things you need to cook and relax. The owners are very friendly, helpful and talk English very well (nice for us as Dutch people). They are truly enthusiastic about the area and can tell you about all the nice views and walks in the direct surroundings of their property. The place is a perfect start for bird watching, botanists and people who like to walk in a highly varied landscape. We enjoyed every minute and would highly recommend it!
Thank you to all of you. We like to know you had enjoyed your stay. For us, it is a great satisfaction !!!
If you come again we will be waiting with new hiking proposals to make sure you will enjoy as much as the ones you did last time you were here.
A wonderful week in one of the most superb places in Western Europe
We had been looking forward to our stay in Extremadura, a little-visited region in the southwest of Spain but our experience there surpassed our expectations. In this large, sparsely populated area of contrasting topography (mountains, steppes, river plains and the dehesa, a unique agricultural landscape where man has, for once, partnered successfully with nature) you can see rare birds and a sea of wildflowers, as well as ancient forests of oaks. It is a glimpse of a Mediterranean landscape that has almost disappeared. The towns are beautiful, with superb Roman ruins in Merida and Renaissance architecture in Caceres. There are few tourists, empty roads and great food. If you want all-day breakfasts and to lie on a beach surrounded by sunburnt Brits, this is not the place for you. If you like peace, beauty and friendly hosts, then Cielo Abierto will give you great pleasure. We can't wait to go back. It is a long drive from the ferry at Santander but on largely traffic-free Spanish motorways it can easily be done in a day. Many thanks to Maria and Maximo (and their adorable Labrador puppy) for making us so welcome and comfortable.
Thanks Linda for your great revew. We are very glad you enjoy your stay in Cielo Abierto. It's a pleasure as a host to have people like you. We hope to see you again.
Great place for walking, birdwatching, sightseeing or only relaxing and enjoying the nice view over the village and good spanish wine and food. Maria, the owner, is very nice and helpfull, asking for your wishes, she has information for everyone and is very fond of her region, the Villuercas. The house was very clean and had everything we needed. We enjoyed our stay and wished we could have stayed longer. Strong recommendation!
Delightful, comfortable chalet in lovely area
We spent a week in a two bedroom chalet at Cielo Abierto which was not long enough and we hope to return. We have booked self-catering accommodation on many occasions in Extremadura and Castilla y Leon and this is the best so far. The chalet was on a hillside overlooking the pretty village of Berzocana and was well furnished, comfortable and emaculate. The south facing terrace was the perfect place for eating meals or relaxing, with complete quiet except for the songbirds. In the evening, the log-burning stove is easy to use and efficient, with an ample supply of logs. Maria, who speaks excellent english and lives nearby, was ever helpful and a fund of knowledge about local places to visit. We enjoy walking but after visits to Trujillo and Guadalupe only had time for the delightful walk into the village, to visit the market and the queseria which makes several types of goat cheese. The bird watching routes look as if they are the ideal way to explore the area and we are reading the literature given to us by Maria in anticipation of a longer stay.
Very good location for those looking for birdwatching, walking holidays, plants and flowers or photography enthusiasts.
Very diverse landscape, close to Guadalupe and Trujillo. Between Monfragüe National Park and La Serena and Sierra Brava reservoirs. Big cranes population.
Lot of old vestiges.
