About Sterling Dorje

As a college student of 19 I found myself on Oahu (I was from Philadelphia) visiting Hawaii for the first time during the Vietman war. At that moment I knew Hawaii was someday to be my home, Maybe it had to do with the ice storm I left back in Philly. When I got home, I applied with United Airlines and moved out to Chicago, then to L.A. I flew for United for 27 yrs. around the world. Nothing came close. Hawaii was to be my destiny ! I married a very interesting man from Tibet 15 yrs. later and eventually we found a place to call home in Hawaii. We both lived out of a suitcase doing international business together and traveling the world. Now we sell 'memories of a lifetime' and enjoy meeting people from all over the world

Sterling Dorje purchased this house in 2003

Why Sterling Dorje chose Hawaii

Living and working in Hawaii is the best you can get ! Sharing our world with our guests brings us much satisfaction. We love our island and the people who make it great. There is nothing like Oceanfront property.. they are not making any more of it..except at Volcano National Park.

What makes this house unique

Outrageous ! The waves, the whales, the pool on the edge of the ocean, the fresh air you breathe in looking down on the crashing waves below. NOTHING LIKE IT !

The house is as advertised. Fantastic ocean view and good location for east side activities.

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our 10 day stay here. We have two teenage girls and having the pool was a nice balance to the ocean. The property is in a good location for volcano park and nice snorkeling and water fall exploring. It is about a 2 hour drive to Kona. We made the trip to the west side several times during our stay. Is about 30 minutes from Hilo depending upon traffic. Very quiet and less touristy than the west side. We saw turtles every day while we sat at the edge of the pool. This side gets about 150 inches of rain a year. It rained every day but never lasts long and did not prevent us from doing what we wanted. I would stay here again.

Disappointing

  • 3 of 5

The good, the bad, and the ugly: We stayed here for one week with our grown son, daughter in law, and two teenage grandsons. We expected much more based on the VRBO description and particularly the photos. This is not a house that will wow you. Here are our disappointments: the "large screen TV" advertised for the living room was a small one that had been raided from the guest house (ohana). Not only was the tv too small for six people to watch the March Madness basketball games together, there was NO TV in the guest house (strike 2). The ice maker did not work. The pool heater didn't work. The furniture was worn and the bedding in the guest house was in need of replacement. The bathroom in the guest house wasn't nearly as nice as the ones in the main house. The person who made up the bed in the guest house didn't put any kind of protective cover over the very worn pillow. Yuch! The photos are deceptive to put it mildly. The pool was chilly particularly the first few days despite great weather. The good: the view out the back is gorgeous. We loved watching the waves roll in. While you can't see down to the rocks where the ocean meets the island, it is truly a mesmerizing view. We saw many green turtles in the ocean. We were relatively close to the volcano national park so we could be there early in the morning before it got crowded. The ugly: the small tv that was raided from the guest house and put in the living room was on an upside down cabinet. I kid you not. The legs were pointing to the ceiling and the doors on either side blocked your view. Stupid? I suspect it was an attempt to make the tv look bigger, like the one we had been promised maybe? I would not stay here again and I certainly am not recommending it to anyone.

Owner's Response: Aloha Craig, We are very sorry to learn that you were not completely satisfied with your vacation at Hilo Shangrila. We only wish you had communicated these issues during your stay so we could have remedied them immediately. Being on an Oceanfront location, the sea spray and moisture are constantly damaging the electronics on our TVs and appliances. We have had to replace TVs almost every 6 months, same with the Icemaker in the Fridge. The day of your arrival we discovered that the Big Screen TV in the living room was not working. It was replaced it with a smaller spare TV as a quick fix solution and enclosed in a cabinet to protect it from the elements. (It was not done to “make the TV look bigger”). We regret that the smaller TV was not good enough for you to enjoy the March Madness Basketball Tournament and you were mad about that. The swimming pool is a 36,000 gallon pool and is Solar Heated. The “Solar Heater” system does work. There is no Gas or Electric Heating for the pool. If the skies are overcast, the pool will not heat as much as when the weather is sunny. The pool water is usually 80 to 85 degrees. We did not have the greatest weather for the few days before your visit. We are glad you enjoyed the incredible views, the serenity of watching the waves roll in… it is quite mesmerizing being one with the ocean and the sky. To address your feedback, we have replaced the TV in the living room with a 40 inch Samsung Smart TV. A New Refrigerator with an Inside Icemaker and Living Room Sofa set have been ordered for mid June 2016 delivery. We constantly strive to improve and upgrade the amenities at Hilo Shangrila to offer our guests the best experience possible. As you can see from the many positive reviews, other guests have enjoyed their stays at Hilo Shangrila.

The Best of Both Worlds with a Pool on the Oceanfront

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for four relaxing nights in November 2015. We love swimming in the ocean but weren't sure about how warm the water would be this time of year or how calm the waves would be on this side of the island. Our search for a home with a pool came to a happy end when we found the Shangrila which offers a lovely pool, hot tub, AND amazing oceanfront views. I'd be shocked if you managed NOT to spot a few sea turtles during your stay.

The home is located on what we consider to be the more interesting side of the Big Island. Although you may have to drive to Hilo if you need something like the post office or a big box store, this property is a minutes drive from the best natural attractions Hawaii has to offer. We loved taking advantage of the many sites and activities nearby: the Kapoho Tidepools, Ahalanui Hot Pond, and many beaches including the "hidden" Kahena black sand beach. The lovely little town of Pahoa is also nearby where you can find a market and many yummy restaurants. The house itself is beautiful and the kitchen has a very adequate supply of cookware for preparing meals.

Although I did not knock down the rating on this property for the following, it should be noted that we thought the house could be a little cleaner. There was nothing that was specifically dirty, per se, but the house could use a general "once over". You can tell it's cleaned after every visit; clean towels and sheets, floors are swept, pool is free of debris. However, it is not clean as if someone is living there. We noticed little bits of kitchen grease on the drawers and cabinets for example, and many of the drinking glasses were not properly washed.

As a side note, make sure not to miss the nearby Uncle Robert's Awa Bar and Farmer's Market on Wednesday nights. It is a pure aloha experience.

The Shangrila offers an abundance of luxuries you will not find anywhere else. It is located on an amazing plot of paradise and we will be back.

Another Relaxing Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

This is now our second time vacationing at this wonderful home. We stayed here for 15 days at the end of October and into November of 2014. (So sorry for the late review) The home offers the perfect spot right on the ocean for incredible views. The pool is amazing! We spent many days just hanging out in the pool and watching the green sea turtles frolic in the surf. The house has everything you could want or need and we cooked in many nights. We were on the Big Island during the lava flow in Pahoa. For a mainlander it was both amazing as well as, shocking and sad to see the destruction. We hiked along the coast to Shipman Beach. We ended up being the only people there that day, taking advantage of this beautiful setting. On your “must do list” when your visiting here is: visiting the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens, Kapoho Tide Pools and the Farmers Markets in Maku’u and Hilo. We highly recommend this property for its location, value and the warm friendliness of Sterling & Trisha. Steve, their caretaker gave great service. Another great vacation to remember. We will definitely be back! All the best, Jim & Gary from Vermont

Beautiful Oceanfront Home

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 9 nights. Even though the weather was not ideal, the pool and spa were great. While we were a little early for whales, we saw plenty of turtles. The sound of the surf and rain at night was very relaxing. The home has great kitchen amenities and the beds were very comfortable. The neighborhood was quiet and peaceful. Volcanoes National Park is a quick ride up the hill. Hilo is close as well. Traffic does back up in the afternoon commute, but there are lanes being added to the highway to remedy this.
