About Sterling Dorje

As a college student of 19 I found myself on Oahu (I was from Philadelphia) visiting Hawaii for the first time during the Vietman war. At that moment I knew Hawaii was someday to be my home, Maybe it had to do with the ice storm I left back in Philly. When I got home, I applied with United Airlines and moved out to Chicago, then to L.A. I flew for United for 27 yrs. around the world. Nothing came close. Hawaii was to be my destiny ! I married a very interesting man from Tibet 15 yrs. later and eventually we found a place to call home in Hawaii. We both lived out of a suitcase doing international business together and traveling the world. Now we sell 'memories of a lifetime' and enjoy meeting people from all over the world

Sterling Dorje purchased this house in 2003

Why Sterling Dorje chose Hawaii

Living and working in Hawaii is the best you can get ! Sharing our world with our guests brings us much satisfaction. We love our island and the people who make it great. There is nothing like Oceanfront property.. they are not making any more of it..except at Volcano National Park.

What makes this house unique

Outrageous ! The waves, the whales, the pool on the edge of the ocean, the fresh air you breathe in looking down on the crashing waves below. NOTHING LIKE IT !

Something you don't say everyday: I'm watching whales from the pool!

  • 5 of 5

Hilo Shangrila was a lovely location especially our goals to taking a boat to see the lava flow and do whale watching. About a half hour from Hilo, (10 minutes from Pohoa where we could shop for groceries) the location was private (even though in a neighborhood) and right on the ocean. A short walk down the street brought us to secluded and dramatic lava cliffs above the ocean. There were five people, so we also used the Ohana Suite. All bedrooms were well appointed with comfortable beds and linens. The kitchen was well stocked with the basics, good quality cookware and an adequate supply of utensils and dishes, including serving dishes. There was a grill that we made use of for fresh Ahi. The hot tub and pool were clean and ready when we arrived. There was a local contact for any questions that arose. Ceiling fans and ample windows made for comfortable inside space, but we spent a lot of time out on the lanai that had nice patio furniture, pool lounge chairs and tiki torches. A relaxing and beautiful home.

Wonderful Puna Ocean Front

  • 5 of 5

This location is perfect for gazing out over the swimming pool at the surf and never feeling the need get out and see any other sights. However, should the tourist bug bite, it is conveniently located within easy driving distance of the east side attractions including the southeast beaches, volcano park, Hilo, and the Hamakua coast drive. We didn't swim in the pool as it is just a little too cool during the winter, but we can see how it would be very refreshing during the slightly warmer summer months. However, the Jacuzzi was well used morning, afternoon, and night! There are plenty of ceiling fans throughout the house and two room air conditioners in the bedrooms which help compensate for the heat from the afternoon sun on the west side of the house. All in all, a superb location on the east coast.

Relaxing, out of the way, well appointed home with clear view to whales and turtles!

  • 5 of 5

This house was exactly what we were looking for. Completely out of the way of tourist traps, complete kitchen with all the amenities and dramatic ocean sounds. The hosts were so considerate. The instructions on the house were very clear and the house was spotless on our arrival. They had everything we needed from towels and bug spray to dishes, pots and pans to do our own cooking. Lots of space and gorgeous shaded deck to eat outside each night, rain or shine. On sunny days, super close to Pahoa Farmer's Market, Pahoa, and Volcanoes National Park. If it rained we were in the hot tub spotting whales on the horizon. We are already trying to plan our next trip back!

Amazing house! Amazing view!

  • 5 of 5

Being the skeptic that I can be at times, before we left for the Big Island, I said "if this house is half as nice as the photos, I will be happy." Happily, my skepticism was not needed because the house is fantastic! The house was clean, comfortable, and fresh. The kitchen is stocked for real cooks, it had everything I needed to prepare meals for a crowd, which we did many times during our week stay. Coffee on the lanai, breakfast on the lanai, dinner on the lanai! (You get the picture!). This is a lovely, charming house, thank you, Sterling and Trish!

When Hurricane Madeline threatened (but eventually became a typical storm), we learned the house had flashlights, candles, matches and lanterns. The ocean view, lanai, hot tub, and pool were enjoyed continually and just perfect. We spotted green sea turtles in the waves and swam in the pool under the stars. The Ohana Suite provided the extra space we needed for the group. While a bit of a drive from Hilo, with some grocery planning in advance, we didn't mind and loved the peace and quiet. We took morning neighborhood walks with an ocean view and met warm and friendly locals. Our other outings included Blue Hawaiian Helicopter ride, hikes in the Park, visit to black sands beaches in the south, and Akaka/Rainbow Falls, and more. When it was time to leave, we all agreed we wished we had booked more days. Great Big Island vacation in a very special house!

The house is as advertised. Fantastic ocean view and good location for east side activities.

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our 10 day stay here. We have two teenage girls and having the pool was a nice balance to the ocean. The property is in a good location for volcano park and nice snorkeling and water fall exploring. It is about a 2 hour drive to Kona. We made the trip to the west side several times during our stay. Is about 30 minutes from Hilo depending upon traffic. Very quiet and less touristy than the west side. We saw turtles every day while we sat at the edge of the pool. This side gets about 150 inches of rain a year. It rained every day but never lasts long and did not prevent us from doing what we wanted. I would stay here again.
