Large Studio located in a quiet private residence. Get away from the crowds and condominium complexes and relax. The property (77-6561 Alii Drive) is across the street from the ocean, built on an ancient lava flow. It is approximately fifteen feet above the beach road and affords wonderful ocean views with the sounds of the surf. It has a semi-private driveway with ample private offstreet parking. It is located between the two most popular beaches of Kailua-Kona:White Sands Beach and Kahalu'u Snorkel Beach.
Surf, boogie board, snorkel or just 'kickback' at one of these wonderful beaches. Both are within easy walking distance of a few blocks. Jogging and bicycling are also popular on Alii Drive as this stretch of road is home to the Ironman Triathalon Event held every October.

Vacant lot was initially purchased in 1984. Our home was built on the property in 1991 with a downstairs studio which is completely separate and private from the main residence.

The property was purchased for its ideal location. It is perfect for maximizing beach time as well as enjoying bicycling/running on the beach road (Alii Drive).
We enjoyed our Kona stay and found the studio to be useful and comfortable in all the ways we needed - terrific appliances and kitchen set-up, good food and bathroom supplies, beach gear, etc. We did find the lack of anyone to welcome, ask questions, and make a connection to be different from our other 3 VRBO locations, since the owner lives on another island and we saw the "house-sitter" only by chance for 20 seconds.
We had a great time staying at Gary's Studio from Mar 5 - 15, 2016. The location is excellent - less than a 10-minute drive to downtown Kona - it is not that far away but the slow moving traffic takes that long to get there. The studio is spacious; just like what you see as presented on the web. The kitchen is well-stocked. We were very impressed by the full list of beach accessories at the Studio, and we used the beach chairs, beach mats, and the cooler every time we went to the beach. There is no direct access to the waters right across the road because of the private residences there, but the public beach access is within walking distance either you walk north or south along Alii Drive. There is a guidebook "Hawaii The Big Island Revealed" by the small table at the entrance. Save yourself $20 of buying it at the airport and just take it with you wherever you go; it has every bit of info you need to enjoy your adventure on the Big Island.
We love snorkeling and this studio is just a 5-minute drive to the famous Kahalu'u Snorkeling Beach (we had the cooler and the beach chairs etc therefore we chose to drive). We saw more than 15 kinds of species the first time and the second time we went back we came across a turtle! We literally saved ourselves USD150 per person for the snorkeling experience instead of going on a boat trip. Gary was very responsive to our questions. We did not see the wifi password info on the small table beside the main entrance. When we text him he responded immediately.
One small suggestion: it would be nice if the 'day bed' is replaced by a futon couch that can be pulled out as a double bed (for the potential 3rd & 4th guests). The set up of the 'day bed' is not entirely comfortable for us to sit on it when we watched TV at night. But again we did not spend much time watching TV because we were busy exploring this place of paradise. Thanks Gary for hosting us and we indeed had a great get-away!
It feels like home and has everything you could need for cooking and relaxing. We used every "toy" in the laundry room (snorkeling gear, boogie board, towels, cooler, beach chair....)
Nice space, could have been better. My main problem with staying here was that the place was too cluttered with furniture. This is basically a medium-sized one room apartment with an attached bathroom. In this one room, you have a dining room table plus 4 chairs, two beds and two good sized coffee tables. There just isn't much room to move around. The second bed, a large twin bed, is my main problem with the use of the space in this apartment. It is right across the room from the TV set. It occupies a space where there really should be a sofa or a futon. There isn't a sofa or futon to sit down and watch the TV (which we really only used to get the local weather) or read a book or to just hang out in the apartment (there isn't any comfortable furniture to just sit down and relax). This second bed takes up a lot of room and I guess it's for additional people to sleep. But the apartment is really only big enough for 2 people. It would be much better to have a futon that folds down to a bed to sleep additional people rather than having a second bed. My wife and I didn't use the second bed and therefore this second bed was just wasted space. You can't convert the bed into a sofa, so it just occupies a lot of space. My recommendation would to be to replace the second twin bed with a futon or sofa, get rid of the table and chairs in the kitchen area (there is a table and chair set outside on the covered patio) and get rid of one of the coffee tables. This would open up a lot of space and really would allow for more space to move around. But right now, the feng shui of the place isn't very good. Again, there is too much clutter in this one room. I think Gary needs to take a second look at the functionality of this space.
That said, we still enjoyed our stay here. It is a splendid location on Alii Drive. It is easy to get anywhere on the west side of the island. You have a nice ocean view (we watched the sunset from here many nights). The outside patio is a nice place to eat meals and enjoy the ocean view. The beach towels and beach chairs plus on site washer and dryer are nice amenities. It's pretty quiet. And Gary is very responsive to your needs (we had a couple of things that needed fixing while we were there and Gary got on it right away).
This studio was perfect for us to explore the Kona side of the island. The thoughtful amenities provided (beach supplies, bathroom items, etc.) were really appreciated. It would have been nice to have blinds on the kitchen window for more privacy.
The location was great, with easy access to sites & local shops, which served us well. The house was just right for us, & the amenities were many - all in good order. Was a very relaxing place to stay & a pleasure working with Gary. Would recommend - with out hesitation. Thank you!
Keauhou Shopping Center is one mile south of the Studio.
There are excellent restaurants as well as a cinema, KTA grocery store, post office, a Friday night Hula show and a Saturday Farmer's market from 9am to noon.
