Built in 2007 a large two story house with 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. There is also a one bedroom apartment adjoining with a beautiful ocean view located on historic property reminiscent of the sugar heydays of the early 1900's of Hawaii. The one bedroom apartment can be rented for larger groups but is not included in the pricing. Please contact Starr the property manager if you are interested in renting the apartment also. Hakalau is a small village founded in the early 1900's by sugar processors.
Enjoy the peacefulness and wonder of "real" Hawaii. Hakalau Haven was built with the intention of giving our guests a place to escape everyday stress and kick up their feet while gazing at the stunning ocean views. The driveway to Hakalau Haven is essentially your portal to the tranquility of Hakalau bay just seconds away.
Famous Akaka Falls is just minutes away. To find Akaka Falls you drive through the quaint little town of Honomu. Honomu has Ed's bakery, small shops to buy souviners, and the Wood Shop Gallery for a quick bite to eat. The falls is 442 feet high, surrounded by beautiful scenery and the sweet smells of Hawaiian flowers await you. Kolekole Beach Park is only 1.43 miles away, great for kids, swimming, surfing, boogie boarding, sun bathing and a nice place to picnic. It is also located between two Botanical Gardens and several waterfalls. The town of Hilo, which offers shopping malls, museums, grocery stores, restaurants, and anything you might need, is just a short drive away. The Tsunami Museum is a must see. The dedicated staff at the museum has a wealth of knowledge regarding museums and life saving information for any visitor to the islands. A Farmers Market is open on Wednesday and Saturdays, with fresh produce and lots of crafts. Volcanoes National Park is a 45 minute drive and a great place to see this island grow. There's also a variety of beaches, white sand, black sand and even green sand.

We live in Palouse, Washington. We have a son with his wife and five grandchildren living in Hawaii.
Starr Adachi purchased this house in 2007
We decided to build a home in Hawaii, so when we frequently visited our son and his family we could also enjoy the comforts of home. When we built Hakalau Haven we knew it would also be a vacation home for other people.
We have a beautiful garden and a breath-taking ocean view. Hakalau Haven is within easy walking distance of Hakalau Bay, which is also a Black sand beach. Two miles from Hakalau is Akaka Falls, a beautifully scenic 442 ft. waterfall. Hakalau is centrally located for several beautiful Hawaiian attractions.
Much mahalo to your ohana, I am so happy you felt at home at Hakalau Haven. I hope to see you again. I will get a knife sharpener.
Mahalo & Aloha!
Sadly, our experience was not as positive as the other reviewers.
First, keep in mind that this rental has no air conditioning, and during our stay temps were in the high '80s with high humidity. Sleeping can be quite warm, and there is not much airflow throughout the house with all windows open. There are ceiling fans but if you have difficulty with hot/humid locations please note this during the summer months. Certainly not the fault of the owner, but it's worth pointing out.
The real disappointment was that the property and house are not well maintained. We found some trash left in the front yard, the grass needs cutting, there were a few rotting coconuts, and there is a driveway sliding gate that was taken down and just left lying down in the front yard. The charcoal grill grate was loaded with burned-on grease.
On the inside, we're asked to remove our shoes but the concrete floors made our feet quite dirty. The ceiling fans had cobwebs on the pull chains, the fridge light was burned out, and the drains all require rubber stoppers as the drain pulls were broken. We had a hard time getting water to the right temperature on the baths; the faucet knobs required a bit of juggling.
On the positive side, this is a large, roomy, airy house in a very small, quaint village where you can experience the real Hawai'i - this is no tourist resort. You're just minutes from Akaka Falls and close to Hilo. The baths are large, comfortable and modern. The master has a nice jetted tub. The main room has an open kitchen and high ceiling and is a great gathering place. The kitchen is well stocked and has nice countertops. There is a nice spinet piano by the front door. It's nice to walk to the end of the quiet residential street and see where the ocean meets the Hakalau stream. A very peaceful and unhurried lifestyle.
Starr was the best property manager I've ever met. Even when there was a minor problem with the property, she came right over and helped us solve it. And the home gave us a place where we had heart-to-heart talk with each other, were healed, and got new energy to do what we came here for.
Our entire family loved staying at this spacious and comfy retreat! We had a big group of about 16 aunties and cousins all staying here for my sisters wedding. We rented out the house and apartment which gave us lots of room for everyone. There were plenty of beds, futons/couches, pillows and bedding for all. Plus 4 full bathrooms! We especially enjoyed how spacious the kitchen, great room and outdoor living areas are. Perfect for group cooking and having family parties!
And if that wasn't enough Starr, the property manager, is just about the nicest and most helpful person you'll ever meet! She greets you warmly as soon as you get there and makes you feel right at home. She's very knowledgeable about the area and goes out of her way to help you enjoy your stay!
Hakalau is our favorite place to be!! The whole house was very inviting. Everything was perfect for all members of our family. Thank you Starr for keeping this place a favorite of ours and being a part of our family. We are already talking about coming back, but not for Merrie Monarch. Just to come an relax and enjoy more sight seeing places that we have not been. Again I thank you for your hospitality. I will be calling as soon as we can establish a date.
Our family really enjoyed our stay! The house was simply decorated which is nice with young children. The location is very accessible from the hiway although there was a little traffic noise at night. Overall we would definitely come back to the house!
My entire family came over to Hawaii to celebrate my Son's wedding and Hakalau Haven was the perfect Haven to house all of us. It comfortably fit all 15 of us and even provided a pack and play for our little 1 year old. This will definitely be one of our most memorable family vacation!
Starr was very accommodating getting us settled and allowing us a late check out!
Thank you for the warm hospitality!
