About the property

3 brs, 1 bath, sleeps 8

Remember when you were young and there was a creek somewhere you went and looked under rocks for crawdads and caught a few brim? Well this is that place. It's also a great location to put your kayak or canoe in. There's an official takeout 5 miles downstream where the creek meets the James River! The cabin is situated right on the creek for easy access. the back room bed has creek views... Convenient to Roaring Run State Park and the national Forest. 30 miles to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

HomeAway wants you to book through them but we prefer to be in control of our own destiny. Regardless of what they say, that does not make us scammers or bad people. We've been doing this for many years and will make sure you are happy. Plus they add a damage deposit so they get to have your money till you get it back, we don't.

This cabin features three bedrooms, dining room, living room, and kitchen. Hammock and fire ring in yard. Gas logs in living room. Available year round. Fishing in a trout stocked creek on property!

Please note that this rental is a rustic summer cabin. We heat with gas logs and a wall heater. If your expectations are camping, you will be very happy. There will be bugs, especially if lights are left on at night. There's an occasional mouse that finds it's way in when the local black snake doesn't get it. 10% of our guests feel that that the cabin is not up to their cleanliness standards. The other 90% are fine with the condition. If you think you are in that 10% of folks with high cleanliness standards, this might not be the place for you. There are some cobwebs and the occasional bug. this place is cleaned by a man who's not to good at it. As long time campers, we love it!

About Jeff Bowles

Just a regular guy who brews beer at home. From Waynesboro but currently live in Blacksburg. Like most people we are busy which is why we like to head to the cabin whenever we can for some R and R.

Jeff Bowles purchased this cabin in 2001

Why Jeff Bowles chose Shenandoah Valley

If you are looking for quit and restful, this is the place. Not for fancy pants! Sometimes we have a mouse and there's an interesting assortment of insects especially in the summer. Most of them make good bait!

What makes this cabin unique

Right on the creek! You can lay in bed and see and hear the creek. On a clear night you can see the milky way from the hot tub!

A great location and a great place. I did a December weekend with my wife, Dad, and brothers when unexpected cold weather derailed a previously planned camping trip. The cabin kept us warm, dry, and entertained. Experienced campers will find this place to be luxurious. Comfortable beds, a functional and well-stocked kitchen, and a beautiful creekside setting. It might not be appropriate for someone looking for all modern conveniences available, but then why rent a cabin if it's got everything you've got at home? I will rent it again and will recommend it to others.

You Get What You Pay For

  • 1 of 5

* Price. You won't find a cheaper rental. Most rentals are double-triple the price.

* Hot Tub

* River access

* Fire Pit

* Location. Close to hiking trails and fishing

* 15 feet to a busy hardtop road and close to other homes. This property isn't quiet or secluded.

* Unacceptably dirty. Most people have a reasonable standard for cleanliness. This house is far below those standards. You get what you pay for.

Owner's Response: So here we go again...10% of the population are clean freaks! We clearly state that this is a rustic cabin and you can scrub it all you want, (several guests have) and it really won't come clean. Somehow these folks keep slipping through the cracks and think they aren't the ones. YES YOU ARE!!! It's not that bad. Nothing is going to bite or infect you. It's a clue when they said 15 feet from the hardtop... These folks must live where roads aren't paved and no one drives on them. The road by the cabin has 20 cars every morning on the way to work and the same 20 cars in the evening on the way home. A few tourists going to Roaring Run to hike on the weekends. I've been in the hot tub for an hour many evenings and nary a car went by. So they mention 5 good things and two bad. On a scale of 1 to five, that should be a 3. Can I get an amen?

This property was exactly as described and was a perfect place for a getaway weekend. Loved the hammock, ring game, card games with chips, cornhole, fishing, and campfire. Couldn't have been more pleased with the stay. Thanks so much!

Rustic Cabin Perfect for Budget and Comfort

  • 4 of 5

We were so thankful to secure an affordable lodging experience on short notice. I read the reviews and was prepared. We we seeking alternative hotel lodging close to Covington so we could spend time with our son who played baseball for the Lumberjacks.

The drive to Covington seemed long and windy (especially after dark) but the respite we had during the day was just what we needed. Since we were only there for a couple days, I pre made food and brought it with us. I also brought paper plates so that we could all chill and eat when we wanted. It was relaxed.

We brought our fishing gear and enjoyed attempting to fish, brought enos and took day naps, skipped rocks, went tubing (owner was available to share suggestions on where to go with that), explored with the camera and piddled. One day, we went to Falling Springs Falls and played in the swimming hole and several hiked to the bottom of the Falls for fun!

I could have easily stayed here several additional days. The scenery in this area is beautiful. We were thankful for the affordable lodging to make this trip so special. Kids enjoyed nightly movies. We rested in the stinky hot tub (iron) and enjoyed the stars... I even enjoyed hanging towels and swimsuits on the clothesline... Simple.

Quiet relaxation

  • 5 of 5

Lovely location in the mountains and right on the creek. Cool water during the day and warm hot tub at night. The hammock event has a solar light chandelier over it!

A bit rustic but plenty of room for our family and friends.

The ring string game was challenging and there's a kids version as well! Corn-hole and board games too.
