Location
At the foot of the Alpilles the archaeological site of Glanum is characterized by important religious and civil monuments discovered in 1921. Glanum is a city sanctuary at the crossroads of two ancient routes linking Italy and Spain, one by the Alps. Located south of the town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, in the direction of Baux-de-Provence, the city extends at the entrance of a rocky defile that leads to the mount Gaussier. At the entrance of the site, on the other side of the departmental road, one sees the mausoleum of Glanum and the Arch of triumph of Glanum, close to a few meters, traditionally called "Antiques of Saint-Rémy- De-Provence ". Their situation on the flanks of the Alpilles and their state of preservation ensured a celebrity well before the late rediscovery of the city of Glanum. Glanum, Greek city dedicated to a healing god, before being the Glanum ancient city of the Roman Empire, in the town of Saint-Remy-de-Provence in the Bouches-du-Rhone. It reached its peak at the time of the first Roman emperor Augustus. Its development was based on the protection of the reliefs of the Alpilles, the presence of a (sacred) spring and the vicinity of the Domitian Way. The city is based on several layers of occupation, which can be grouped into three major periods: Gallic period, Hellenistic period of influence, and finally Roman period. VAN GOGH Vincent van Gogh arrives May 8, 1889 in Saint-Rémy de Provence, from Arles, to be "interned", at his request, the Asylum Saint-Paul de Mausole. Fascinated by the quality of light and the ardent beauty of the landscapes he discovers in Saint-Rémy. Very inspired, happy and relieved to finally find a serene and understanding atmosphere with the nuns and the staff who welcome him, he realized nearly 150 paintings and many drawings in the space of a year (Les iris, La meridian, The starry night, Self-portrait ...). This period Saint-Rémoise is considered as major in the work of Vincent Van Gogh. He left Saint-Rémy, May 16, 1890, for Auvers sur Oise where he will disappear, a little more than two months later, July 29, 1890. AVIGNON Capital of Christianity in the Middle Ages, Avignon has kept its history of an exceptional heritage of which a large part is inscribed on the World Heritage List of Unesco: the Palais des Papes and the Pont d'Avignon, but also the palace square with the baroque facade of the mint, the Petit Palais museum and the cathedral of the Doms, as well as the ramparts from the Doms' garden until at the bridge. THE BAUX DE PROVENCE The village of Les Baux de Provence is located in the heart of the Alpilles on a rocky plateau at 245m. It dominates exceptional landscapes on Arles, the Camargue and the Alpilles and offers you breathtaking panoramas. This huge and beautiful stone fortress is undoubtedly one of the must of Provence The village is classified and labeled "one of the most beautiful villages in France", it has been patiently restored with great care. Today, its historical heritage is exceptional with a treasure of 22 architectural pieces classified as a Historic Monument: church, castle, city hall, hospital, chapels, houses, doors ... not to mention the furniture and the collection of paintings. THE CAMARGUE The Camargue, a territory at the confluence of Gard and Bouches du Rhône, Languedoc and Provence, the Rhone and the Mediterranean. South of Arles, in the Rhône delta, the Camargue covers an area of 150,000 hectares between sky, land and sea. Covered with ponds and lagoons, it is a breeding ground for horses and bulls that live in freedom among flamingos and hundreds of other animal species. Discovery of Gardian culture and its traditions, its cities with an exceptionally rich history, walks on foot or horseback between sea and ponds, tourist route, water activities or lazing on the beach, you will be spoiled for choice!
