Casa Piña SMA is one of San Miguel de Allende’s finest colonial homes furnished with period antiques and original artwork. This three-bedroom and four-bathroom downtown villa sleeps up to six guests and is attended to by a courteous, diligent and trustworthy staff that provide personalized service for guests and the luxury of total leisure.
Experienceing the best of both worlds
Casa Piña SMA’s front door is just half a block from the center of town, offers unparalleled access to the idilic life of el Jardin and convenient strolls to all points beyond in the centro historico. Yet behind the thick adobe walls of its original facade guests will experience a rare form of peace, privacy and privilege.
Dining al fresco and sunsets from the mirador
Casa Piña SMA’s focal point is the central patio with a large stone fountain in the middle. The south-facing “outdoor” living room and dining room is a year-round favourite with all guests. It fills with warm winter sunlight and remains cool and shady in the summer as the sun travels further north. It is a lovely spot to spend the entire day, to entertain or host a comida with guests. Another table in the cactus garden at the rear of the house provides an al-fresco dining option.
At sunset, the rooftop mirador is the best spot in the house to start the evening in style or to reflect on the day’s events as the sky lights up in a colourful display and sun disappears behind the distant mountains.
Master bedroom suite and guest bedrooms
At Casa Piña SMA, the three widely-separated bedrooms over three stories provide privacy, tranquility and rest.
The second-floor master bedroom suite has a huge boveda, or domed, ceiling and provides guests with total comfort and space. It includes a king-sized bed, an adjacent, private, outdoor sun deck, two walk-in closets, and two en-suite bathrooms. Banks of south facing french doors on either side of a fireplace keep the room toasty with direct natural light in the winter.
The second bedroom, in a separate building, is half a flight up from the patio and has it’s own veranda. It has soaring ceilings supported by original beams, twin beds, fireplace, bathroom with shower, and French doors that open on to the cactus garden.
The third bedroom sits atop the the second bedroom but is a full story up from the master bedroom suite. It has a has a Queensize bed, bathroom with shower, and a comfortable terrace overlooking the central patio. Guests seeking higher ground will find it along with stunning views up the spiral staircase to the rooftop mirador, or lookout.

My family and I have stayed in Casa Pina twice in the last few years; the house and the location are remarkable. We have stayed in other homes in San Miguel but the house on Aldama has been the best, it makes the SMA experience even more memorable.
Three couples, all of us old friends rented Casa Pina for two weeks and found it a truly exceptional place. Not only is it as beautiful and interesting as the photos suggest, but even more special. Each of us had our own private bedroom and bath and each an outdoor space for quiet reading, etc. Moreover, the house comes with Lupe, an outstanding cook, who did all the grocery shopping for us and prepared some unforgettable Mexican dishes. She also squeezed fresh orange juice for us every day and presented us with a daily platter of sliced fruits that any gourmet restaurant or hotel would be happy to serve. We also had the service of Teresita, who made our beds, cleaned our quarters as well as the public spaces and did our personal laundry. On top of all this, we were a 5 minute walk from the very center of historic San Miguel and the weather was magnificent. Jacarandas in bloom are unforgettable. We are all retired and all lovers of art, architecture and the wonderful flora of the Bajio, this great section of Mexico. We are encouraging all our friends to consider taking a holiday in Mexico at Casa Pina. One unexpected plus: any one over 60 gets huge discounts on public transportation; our roundtrip 6 hour bus trip Mexico City-Queretaro cost us the princely sum of $20 US each on the matchless Mexican luxury buses.
Traveling for two weeks with friends you have known for forty years can be a wonderful experience or a little too much together time. Thanks to the very private accommodations at Casa Pina, our friendships are stronger than ever. And thanks to the delicious meals prepared by Maria Guadalupe we were totally spoiled by the time we left. Teresa kept this beautiful 250 year old villa spic and span as well as keeping us spiffy by helping us with our laundry. We are already signed up for next year.
My husband and I returned to San Miguel after our first trip in 2012. This time we were with two couples who had not been to the City. On our recommendation, we stayed again at Casa Pina, where we had stayed in 2012. The other four were seasoned travelers, and so we held our breath, hoping that they would love Casa Pina as much as we had the first time we were there. We needn't have worried. They were as charmed as we were, and thanked us many times for bringing them to this magical home.
Maria and Theresa, the cook and housekeeper, were there again, and were again attentive to our needs . . . and patient with our lack of Spanish speaking skills. Again, we did not take advantage of the lunches that they would have provided, but enjoyed their wonderful breakfasts every morning, as well as one dinner prepared at our request. The house was also beautifully maintained and picked up for our return each late afternoon or evening. Aleida, the owner, was also available to answer any questions that we had, as was the English speaking property manager.
The location of the house is without peer. Within 1 1/2 blocks of the Jardin, and very near to the action while being very quiet and secluded. The design and decoration of the house are also very special. Three very private bedroom areas gave each couple all the privacy that they might want, while the common areas (particularly the living/dining room that is open to the courtyard, gave ample space for our time together. A second living room and dining room are available, but seldom used because we didn't want to leave the open air living area and large fireplace - perfect for eliminating any early morning or evening chill.
In addition to the ample private areas, the Wi-Fi helped those of us who had to do a little work while we were there.
Look no further. This is the place to stay. This 250 year old villa is perfect. Indoor/outdoor living in an historic setting, 1 block from the square, with helpful staff. Elegantly furnished with comfortable beds. Private.
Our stay at Casa Pina was a wonderful experience! We were so pleased with the attention that staff members Theresa, and Guadalupe gave us throughout our stay - wonderful breakfasts, attention to gluten-free requests, delicious guacamole on the spur of the moment and well-maintained living spaces.
And, thanks to owner Aleida for being available and making sense of our requests throughout our stay. We all appreciated her excellent restaurant and shopping recommendations.
The authentic Mexican property worked beautifully for our needs. We loved spending time together in the outdoor living room and beautifully maintained interior gardens. And, each of us enjoyed the privacy of our personal living spaces.
Proximity to the Jardin and Parroquia was another major plus since our party included a couple of ”not so mobile” guests. And, a special early morning treat was the view of the Jardin and the ever-present hot air balloon (at 7:15 am) from the Casa Pina rooftop!
We are looking forward to our next visit.
Casa Piña SMA is at the start of Aldama, a picturesque, cobblestone, residential street that leads away from the back wall of la Parroquia, San Miguel's main church located on el Jardin, the town's central square. The chic restaurants, bars and rooftop terraces of hotels Matilda and Rosewood are a just two blocks away, on el Parque Benito Juarez, San Miguel's Central Park, if you will. El Centro Historico is at your doorstep, everything's within walking distance-- really.
