Kealakekua Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Rainbow Ohana Vacation Rental offers open ocean views, banana trees, hibiscus, plumeria and a small working Kona coffee farm right on the premises. We offer simplicity, comfort and the spirit of Aloha.

Rainbow Ohana is an affordable vacation rental for the adventurous traveler seeking authentic Hawaiian beauty, peace, and serenity. All the comforts of home in a lush tropical setting only .4 miles off the highway but with a feeling of rural space and modest luxury.

Handpainted furniture, tasteful art and decor, this spacious 1 bedroom unit has both modern conveniences and tropical Hawaiian charm. Less than 10 minutes from Kahaluu Beach Park and 15 minutes from Kailua-Kona resort town, our location is ideal for relaxation or sightseeing along the sunny Kona coast. We are actually about 5 minutes north of Kealakekua (in Honalo), making travel to Kona just a little bit faster than it would be from Kealakekua itself.

Managed with warm aloha and gratitude for our guests choice to stay with us on their Hawaiian vacation. We hope your visit to our guest house will be the first of many happy travels to explore our beautiful island.

About Beth Firestein

I fell in love with the Big Island several years ago and in 2007 I had the opportunity to buy a place of my own on the Kona coast. I really enjoy sharing the beauty of my Hawaiian cottage with others. I can't be on the island full-time and sharing this incredible place with you brings me joy. I hope you enjoy your stay as much as I do when I am on the Big Island.

Beth Firestein purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Beth Firestein chose Kona Coast

I love being part of the historical Kona coffee growing area of the island. I can watch the coffee cherries mature over the year from the delicate white coffee flowers to the deep red of ripe coffee cherry ready for harvest. I also enjoy the cooler temperatures at our elevation of 1100 feet above sea level. The cottage is a very comfortable place to stay any time of the year.

What makes this cottage unique

I find such peace and pleasure when I snorkel with the colorful tropical fish and sea turtles at Kahalu'u Beach Park, only 7 minutes from my lovely cottage. I can enjoy gorgeous sunsets from the screened-in lanai and on clear, moonless nights, I can see the Milky Way. I also love eating the bananas and avocados that grow on my property. I can't think of a better place to stay on the Kona coast.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our stay at The Rainbow Ohana was wonderful from the moment we arrived. The property is well maintained and included lots of amenities not usually found in a rental property, i.e. foil, plastic wrap, coffee filters and plastic storage bags. Ample beach chairs, towels and coolers were also included. It is close to several beaches and restaurants but far enough off the beaten path that you don't feel encroached upon. Do not be put off by the less well maintained properties that you pass at the top of St Paul Road before you get to the Rainbow Ohana.

Urlaub im Garten Eden

  • 5 of 5

Perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

Rainbow Ohana is perfectly situated, away from the crowds but close enough to everything! We were able to easily explore the northern part of the island and all of the beaches north of Kona. The cottage is well equiped with everything neded for a comfortable stay. The kitchen/eating area is spacious with a great view of the ocean. The bedroom/sitting area is large with plenty of storage space for your belongings. The grounds are beautifully maintained, making the entire property very peaceful and inviting!

Tropical Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Both my 80 year old mother and I loved staying at the Cottage. It felt like a lush tropical paradise with banana trees, pineapples, papaya tree, etc all around us. The view of the ocean is lovely and the whole setting is enchanting. The kitchen is very well equipped and we loved eating breakfast in the screened in kitchen listening to all the birds. The cottage was clean and had everything we needed. I would happily stay there again. Thanks so much to Beth for all the great information she had sent beforehand and the fruit that was waiting for us when we arrived. We had a wonderful time there and loved the location.

clean and neat cottage off the beaten path

  • 4 of 5

We wanted a unit that was not a condo and was away from the city center and busy traffic and this unit was perfect - close enough to the major attractions and the main highway, but in a very quiet neighborhood with a private screen porch and back yard overlooking the ocean. Shopping, both for food and otherwise, was within 10-15 minutes' drive. When we had questions the owner and/or local manager were very quick to respond via email. We found the unit clean and very well equipped with many small items that most rental units do not provide. Unfortunately we had been traveling for 22 hours when we arrived in Kona, and it was pitch black when we arrived at the cottage. The neighborhood road off the main highway is narrow, and we had a problem finding the driveway in the dark - but in hindsight the directions were clear enough and it was just our fatigue and jet lag that caused the problem. The only negative is that the entire island (and Kauai too, as we've since found) seems to have LOTS of chickens and roosters running loose, and if you believe the old saying "the rooster crows (only) at the break of day" you'd be mistaken - the only time they were quiet was from dark until about 3 am. Other than the chickens (which I'd imagine would be a factor at almost any other unit too) we'd be happy to return to this unit if we return to the Big Island or recommend it to others.

Owner's Response: Mahalo for your thoughtful and kind feedback on your stay at Rainbow Ohana Guest House. We strive to meet and exceed the expectations of our guests and do our best to treat every guest who stays with us as ohana (family). We take pride in our responsiveness to guest needs or concerns and providing our guests with the little extras (spices, a few condiments, and so forth) that make staying at our cottage a little more accommodating. Given that we are located 1/2 mile off the main road, we do have a typical neighborhood street with no street lights. Fortunately, we do give good, detailed directions and we are now checking to make sure that the solar light marking the honu (turtle) sign at the entrance to the driveway is working properly. Of course, most guests find it easiest to arrive in daylight hours the first time when possible. While we don't own any roosters or chickens on our small farm, some of our neighbors do and quite a few of the chickens are wild and wander around at will. Having been on my property many times over the past 9 years, I know that they are sometimes far away and sometimes nearby. We have found that closing the windows and sliding glass door into the bedroom definitely helps and we are now offering a "Cockadoodle Don't" kit (i.e. ear plugs) for sensitive sleepers when our nomad roosters forget to obey the "no crowing until dawn" rule. Again, thanks so much for taking the time to offer your comments. We enjoyed having you as our guests and hope you are able to return someday. Sincerely, Beth and Staff

Beautiful ocean view and sunsets

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent 4 nights at the cottage and we loved it. The pictures and information provided were accurate, the cottage was very clean and the bed is comfortable. The gardener, Kelly, left us a beautiful vase of tropical flowers, and fresh bananas and an avocado from the garden. The open air feel and porch living were just what we were looking for. Enjoyed dinner at Annie's Burgers and Ke'ei's Cafe.
