The "Casa de Oliveira" is an apartment of 160 m² with 3 large bedrooms (a master suite, a bedroom with double bed, a bedroom with a sofa bed for 120 x 200 cm), a double lounge / Dining room, a spacious kitchen (sufficient for 6/8 people) and perfectly equipped (fridge, dishwasher, electric hob, coffee maker, oven, microwave, washing machine, etc.) , 3 bathrooms / toilets, an entrance hall and a long balcony facing south (on which the sun gives from 8 am to 5 pm). The apartment is located on the 4th and last floor, which makes it very bright and allows him to enjoy a beautiful view of the mountain of Penha.
In terms of its location, the apartment is located northeast of Guimarães, in the "Freguesia da Costa" area slightly elevated compared to the city center. It is about ten minutes walk from the historic center and medieval Guimarães. A small supermarket and a bakery are at the bottom of the building. Cafes, tearooms and "Take Away" surround. You will find many restaurants in the historic center; If you wish, I can advise you on certain addresses, those which seem to me the most representative of the local gastronomy.
45 minutes from Porto airport, with a bus service that drops directly into the city for 8 € and bookable online in advance (Guimarães is the birthplace of Portugal, the city where was born the first king of country, Alphonse-Henri, where the kingdom was proclaimed by the latter, and from which it has gradually spread since the twelfth century, to the current borders.
Wherever one is in Portugal, one is never far from the ocean or sea: the whole country is a coastline. The beaches of the Atlantic coast are the closest. For a beautiful sandy beach, you can for example get to Povoa de Varzim and Vila do Conde, 45 km from the apartment (about 40 minutes by motorway by car). River beaches are located closer, with water at a warmer temperature.
For nature lovers, a cable car near the apartment (fifteen minutes walk) to mount to the summit of the mountain of Penha (that faces the balcony of the apartment) and enjoy a view beautiful on the entire region, as well as a renowned restaurant, large wooded areas dotted with more or less hidden caves. The location is ideal for walkers and hikers.
From a cultural point of view, Guimarães does not have to be ashamed of the comparison with Lisbon or Porto. Because of its history, this is one of the most active cities in Portugal in this area throughout the year. Its programming so rich has made it the European Capital of Culture in 2012.
The fact is that the historical monuments punctuate the city: the castle of Guimarães, the palace "Paço dos Duques" which houses a museum, many medieval churches, the museum Alberto Sampaio (former monastery with a magnificent arcaded cloister reconverted into museum and presenting a large collection of sculptures and jewels from the Middle Ages to the 18th century) ... Without forgetting its magnificent medieval historic center which was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.
Contemporary culture is not left out and offer in this area is vast and varied. There are two of the largest cultural centers in the country: the "Centro Cultural de Vila Flor" (called by its initials CCVF), the Platform of Arts and Creativity (also called the International Center of Arts José Guimarães) dedicated to contemporary art. But these are not the only places dedicated to culture elsewhere in the city, you can attend numerous concerts and visit large galleries with exhibitions (painting, photography, etc.).
Also take place in Guimarães numerous festivals, some of which have become unmissable events of the European art scene. The most famous are: in October, the Noc Noc festival presents a very rich program in all the arts, with the particularity of making apartments and houses of private individuals places of concerts and exhibitions; In the first weeks of November, the Guimarães Jazz (which celebrated its 25 years in 2016), whose notoriety never ceases to grow, is one of the most famous festivals in this matter; On the last week of July, the Manta Festival offers a series of concerts in the city's gardens, mainly rock and independent music, all for free ...
Finally, in the winter, the illuminations of Christmas shine with a thousand fires and, in summer, outdoor cinema and street shows animate the city by day and night.
As one of the capitals of the "vinho verde" or green wine (which is actually a white wine), it also benefits from the wine tourism boom in the region, driven by the city of Porto, close, particularly active and dynamic in the matter. The "vinho verde" is indeed the dominant wine of this northern region, ideal to accompany seafood and fish. His name was given in homage to the dominant color of the region. river Douro to the Minho, the vineyards extend in a 130 km wine route ( "Rota Dos Vinhos Verdes"), increasingly famous road therefore requires Guimarães. The wine region extends over nearly 35 000 hectares. You can visit the outskirts "Quintas" (vineyard), walk in the vineyards and enjoy a wine tasting.
Gastronomy are its golden letters. Besides the restaurant located at the top of the Penha, it would be a shame to miss the "São Gião", considered for many years as the best in the country, or the "Casa Amarela" and the "Historico", both located in Full center.
