Open concept newly renovated 100 year old school house!

Enjoy your holiday in central location of Cape Dauphin (20 minute drive to Baddeck) at the base of Kelly's Mountain, in a school house that is newly renovated, over 1200 square feet, cathedral ceilings, original hardwood floors and wainscoting throughout, open concept kitchen and living area, bedroom on main level and a very large loft area on the second level which has two single beds and a queen bed, half bathroom and separate shower/tub room on the main level, large wrap around deck, bright and private with great views of the Bras D'or Lakes, nice breeze from ocean. There is a lovely sandy beach sometimes rocky spots depending on the years tidal action, just a 5 to 10 min walk (down a path, across a dirt road and down a driveway). For those who have trouble walking you can drive. There is a fire tub on the beach so you can collect wood along the beach and have a fire if you desire (of course weather permitting ). Very private and secluded. Pets are welcome (we charge a pet fee).

We also have two other properties with potential availability in the same area that could be booked if there is a gathering of families.

Restaurants and grocery store: There are a few restaurants close by. The cottage is approximately a 15 min drive down a dirt road (good condition) to the Trans Canada Highway. There are two good restaurants 10 min from the TransCanada Highway.

Wonderful holiday spot. Molly (dog) and Noofer (dog) loved the yard and the sniffies.

We loved the cottage and C.B.!

We planned off-season for the peace and quiet. Weather was perfect.Couple days of rain to ensure we took a home day. Brilliant sun and warm the rest of the time. Colours were intense a must-get-in Pie from the Jam market just before north sydney. Also Bread and Buns on the cabot trail. The dancing moose cafe has some home made goodies, a nice cat and incredible views.Meat Cove and Bay St. Lawrence are worth the trip. Gorgeous!

Inverness Beach one of the best in the world. Egypt Falls ( barely on the map) by upper mar agree is a vertical climb for the very fit. Glenora Distillery pour your own single malt from a cask. Town of Louisbourg is very pretty take the side trip to the lighthouse. Keep pets and kids in the car !! cliffs are unforgiving- waves are awesome beaches everywhere EXPLORE!!

Rustic but quiet and comfortable.

Kitchen cookware was adequate but the dishwasher was awful - a white coat covered every dish surface. House was cool enough in the heat but would have liked to use the wood stove on the cool nights but there was a note telling us not to use the stove. Had a squirrel issue but Richard came right away and took care of the problem

The property and home is rustic, private with a great view

Our family enjoyed the "Old school house" very much. There is loads of room and wide open space inside and outside we were surrounded by trees and animals. One of our neighbors was a sweet bunny we saw and watched forging for food daily on the property. We swam daily in the ocean; the water was amazing and the beach very private. The owner attended to our needs promptly. We would considering renting this property again. I think a Fall/Winter stay would be something we would also consider.....should that be available.

Beautiful, Isolated Place

Richard, the landlord, was quite helpful during an emergency time of big winds and floods nearby. Lovely, quaint building but bring flashlight for using bathroom at night if you're upstairs (spiral staircase). Cable TV out maybe due to storm. Peaceful, beautiful setting! Road was in decent shape but be prepared for an 8 k drive on dirt road...

Lovely, Relaxing, Home

I feel bad reading the negative reviews on this VRBO! We were quite satisfied! People need to remember that this is a cabin, and not a hotel. We found it quite clean and comfortable. Everything is labeled with notes and instructions. We appreciated the bottled water. It would have been good to know what was provided, such as coffee filters, as we went out and bought some (which clearly others have done too). And to know the laundry situation too (I had lots of whites that I wasn't able to wash.) It is so handy that the toilet and shower are in separate rooms, and that each room has a sink. Wi-Fi would have been a bonus, but it was kind of nice to be "unplugged" for a bit. And if we were desperate, we found a signal out on the deck... which we loved, by the way. (The sliding door needs some work though) Honestly, our only real disappointment is that it is quite a drive off the main highway and a little difficult to find. Our GPS almost got us there, but led us up the wrong driveway (some better signage at the end of the driveway would be very helpful! Thankfully, we found your sister's cabin and she showed us the way!) Oh, and were we allowed to start a fire in the fireplace? No firewood...

Owner's Response: thank you for your response and will follow up at updating the site to explain the washer situation, also we did have wifi at one time but the lack of reliable service from bell we opted to disconnect it and we do specify that there is no wifi service but good cell service. And yes the patio door is due for replacement this winter. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay

Not impressed

Stayed in 3 different home rentals during our stay in the East Coast. This was our least favourite. For us, it was too isolated. If travelling on the cabot trail, we felt it was too far out. (9km from main highway, on a dirt road) We utilized the ferry at Englishtown, but it still took almost 2 hours to get to Ingonish. Travelling to Sydney it was very convenient. The house itself, has a nice space. For me, it could have used a better cleaning. Dust was on the floorboards and bathroom corners. As a renter, I want this to be cleaner than a hotel, and to me it was not. I understand this is in the country, but it still could be maintained somewhat better. Crumbs were found on counter top when we arrived, and that through me off as well. WE used the dishwasher everyday, but as we were only given 3 dishwashing tablets, we broke them in half to use at each wash cycle. All dishes had a white layer on them I assume from using cold water only. The cookware itself, needs updating. Every pan used, our food stuck onto and made a mess. There was nothing to use, such as "Pam" to prevent this. Could stock better as well with things such as saran wrap or foil, or zip lock bags to make things more convenient for renters. The washing machine only uses cold water, and as the iron levels are high I did not wash whites, as warned, but some of our coloured clothes, had stain marks on them as well. Plenty of towels were there to use, but we found hairs on some of them, which puts me off! I used the bed downstairs and found it so hard that my body ached. Pillows were so soft, they had to be doubled. We paid the most for this during our maritime stay, and found this the least favourite on our list. The owner was said to come to meet us, so unless he came when we were not there, no one came to see how we made out.

Owner's Response: Hi there, thank you for your review, I was up a number of times but you were out and the cottage is well equipped with the essentials as is most cottage rentals. The school house is over a 100 years old and is 9 km from the highway as stated on the site and has beautiful drive in and out along the water. As far as stocking kitchen consumables I don't know of any one that does this we do however provide ample supplies for the everyday use (soap, dish soap and yes there were enough tabs for the dishwasher for each day) The beds are newer and we have never had any complains on their comfort but there is a underlay foam bed mat in the closet that you could have used. Sorry that you did not contact me to discuss these issues when you were here.

Cute, Clean, and Peaceful

We were a little concerned to book this house because of the mixed reviews. When we arrived we were pleased to discover that it suited our family of five perfectly.

The house itself is charming and clean. We loved the open floorplan, loft and funky spiral staircase. There was plenty of towels and bedding. No A/C, but there were several effective ceiling fans. We loved walking down the road to the rocky beach -- very relaxing.

There are a few minor downsides. The kitchen could use a little attention -- more utensils and bakeware. A cookie sheet would be fabulous. Be warned that the water has a ton of iron. We bought bottled water to drink. If you plan on washing clothes, there is a washing machine only, and the iron-rich water will stain your whites. There is also no wi-fi but that worked beautifully to un-plug and de-stress our family. We watched a movie or two on the TV and DVD player (there are a few movies there).

Otherwise, out of the three houses we stayed in on our vacation, this was our favorite. The location was great - fifteen minutes to the Gaelic College, half an hour to Sydney, an hour to the Louisbourg Fortress (very cool). Nice big wrap-around porch and a grill (yes!!!). Starry skies, a hoppy bunny, but no moose or bears. :( Super quiet, secluded, and a good price. We'd go back in a heartbeat.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feed back and we will definitely have a look at the kitchen utensils and restock and declutter existing utensils, the house does have a high iron in its water but we do let all visitors know of this so that they do not do whites in the wash and or choose to drink the water as it is safe just high in iron. We are also installing a water cooler to help with the iron issue. Hope to see you come back again Thank You Richard

Car: recommended

We are located on the New Campbellton Road in the community of Cape Dauphin (population 15 full time residents).

Take a 5 minute walk and you are n a private sandy beach, you can walk for miles and not see anybody. From Cape Dauphin you can do all your day trips around the island. Down the road there is Kelly's wharf where you can fish mackerel, buy fresh lobster, join in with the cottagers for a bonfire. Close by there is Bird Island boat tours, boat charters and whale watching, world-class golf course (Bell Bay), Highlands National Park, hiking trails, Alexander Graham Bell Museum and historic fortress of Louisbourg. It is 50 minutes from Sydney, 30 minutes to shopping area in North Sydney, 25 minutes to the tourist town of Baddeck.
