Alice Humbert owns the Kaunu cottage, from whom we rented personally on VRBO. We were privileged to be able to experience this cottage. The cottage was immaculate and beautifully furnished and decorated. From the moment you open the door you are transported into a world that takes you back to an earlier time in Hawaii. Everything you could want is in this cottage. From a coffee grinder for that fresh and famous Kona Coffee available all over the island to a washer and dryer just the right size for keeping your suit and board shorts ready to wear. The two comfortable bedrooms have the island style atmosphere and if you close your eyes you can almost feel taken back in time. Each morning we enjoyed our coffee on the beautiful lanai with ocean views and beautiful sunsets. The sounds of the local birds added to this picturesque setting. We would spend our mornings at the beach and afternoons in the private yard where we enjoyed tanning or just a little nap! Great surfing, boogie boarding, diving and every other beach/water sport imaginable is near by. The outdoor shower is great for rinsing off people and gear. In the evenings we could prepare our own meals either at the cottage or barbecue on the lanai. This cottage has it all! Several of the best beaches on the Big Island are ten minutes away and we had many restaurants to choose from along the Kohala coast or up country in Waimea. We had such a wonderful time and Alice provided us with a wealth of local knowledge and aloha that made our stay memorable.
Everything about this cottage exceeded our expectations. Not only did it work perfectly for a relaxing vacation, it was close to the best beach in the country (only 8 minutes away). The owner has truly thought through all of the amenities one needs for an Hawaii vacation -- picnic coolers, boogie boards, beach umbrellas, beach towels.
We'll be going every year now I expect. We highly recommend this to others.
The cottage was a very comfortable place for us to spend a few days. It is close both to the coast and to Waimea and is surrounded by beautiful countryside.
My husband and I spent 3 night's at Alice's cottage. We chose the property because it was so close to a cultural event that we planned to attend on the first morning of our stay. We live on the other side of the island, several hours away, so driving in the early morning wasn't an option as the event started at 6:30 AM. The location was ideal but the cottage itself was even better. It was immaculately clean, beautifully decorated and absolutely restful and peaceful. We especially loved the comfortable bed and the walk-in shower, both of which make a big difference when traveling, but really everything in the cottage was just lovely. We stopped in Waimea for groceries on our way to the cottage so made most of our meals there, but we also enjoyed shave ice from the truck in the Blue Dragon parking lot in Kawaihae (Original Big Island Shave Ice) as well as take-out sliders and fries from the Blue Dragon. The cottage is within minutes of several world-class beaches, so we spent several afternoons snorkeling at various spots. We also took a drive around the North Kohala and Hamakua Coast and spent one afternoon in Kailua Kona. The cottage is convenient to everything on that side of the island. And the sunsets are spectactular! We enjoyed every minute of our stay. Thank you, Alice.
My wife and I had a great stay at Alice’s cottage. Here's a quick rundown of the highlights:
- Location, location, location: On the dry side of Waimea/Kamuela. Minutes down the hill to the best beaches on the island. About 10 minutes up the hill to downtown Waimea, with its restaurants and grocery stores. Super convenient to exploring the Waikoloa, Kohala and Honoka’a areas of the island. Very private cottage that is by itself on a large plot of land.
- Amenities: Comfortable bed, wonderful shower, lanai and back yard. Powerful ceiling fans in living room and both bedrooms. Full kitchen with dishwasher. Washer and Dryer.
- Air Conditioner in the master bedroom. It’s a small portable unit, but the cold air is welcome when the winds stop blowing.
- Fantastic host: When we arrived, we saw that two small repairs were needed in the house. Alice showed up with a handful of tools and a bunch of glue and we had a great conversation while she fixed everything. Not the ideal way to meet your hostess, but it certainly was welcome that she cares enough about the cottage and her guests to fix it herself.
All in all, our trip was a great getaway!
We spent a glorious six weeks at Alice's cottage to start off 2016. It was a wonderful experience. Alice is a gem, making sure you have what you need and giving tips on local conditions. The cottage is well represented in the photos and you get what you see. You are somewhat isolated and need a car. But you are only about 8 minutes away from some of the great beaches of the Kohala Coast. Also Waimea is a lovely town to spend time in for your shopping, markets, restaurants etc.
The one drawback is that there are no hiking trails you can access from the property. You have to drive first to take a walk. We would love to go back again when we make it back to the Big Island.
This was my second stay in the cottage. I found it just as relaxing as the first. Everything was clean and well appointed. The easy access to the beaches and other parts of the island makes this the best place. Plus the sunsets are always so beautiful.
