The hottest part of the day is between 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm We suggest planning your day outside the unit during this time period to avoid the discomfort for those who can't take the heat or take a swim in Moloaa Bay or kayak down the river to the beautiful Moloaa Bay that will cool you down with ocean breezes and large shade trees along the shoreline. For sun lovers, the deck is an incredible tanning location from early morning until late afternoon.

There are also lovely and relaxing reading locations on this property. Take your pick.

The spacious bedroom offers a queen size bed with its own TV and ceiling fans and an exit door to the back lanai offering easy access in the night to star gaze just outside your bedroom. The bathroom has a walk in glass shower with good water pressure.. Some prefer the outdoor shower below with hot & cold water.

Due to the stairwell access to this home by going up 16 feet high in the air, we feel that it would be too difficult for the elderly to access with ease. Also, due to the height of the cottage and the surrounding waters, we feel children would be at risk

Beautiful property, perfect stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this home while in Kauai for our honeymoon in June. It was absolutely wonderful and hard to leave at the end of the week! The house is clean, comfortable, and had every amenity we could've asked for. (Dishwasher, washing machine, towels, recycle bins, safe, television, Wifi, bbq, kayak, etc) We loved the lush surrounding property as well as the light, airy feel of the interior of the home. The property owners were responsive and helpful anytime we had a question or concern. We loved the privacy and the secluded sitting area near the river. The location is so great, a short walk or kayak trip to the amazing Moloaa beach, we ended up liking this beach more than any of the other beaches we traveled to on the island! We liked that the home was also a good starting point for any daily activities, Princeville, Hanalei, and Hideaways to the north, and Kapaa, Lihue, and Poipu to the south. We even hiked a trail into the island near Kapaa one morning, stopped back at the house for lunch and a quick siesta, and finished the day in the northern towns. We loved coming home to such a beautiful place every evening. Overall this property was phenomenal, worth every penny, and we cant wait to return on our next visit to Kauai.

Peaceful Beauty

  • 5 of 5

Wow, this was such a treat. After spending a week in Poipu, my husband and I headed to Moloaa for a four day less crowded finish to our trip. From the updated interior, the beautiful garden, the kayak through the forested lagoon to the BEACH. Fabulous hike to spectacular vista, refreshing swimming in the ocean, to the best snorkeling we found. We were going to rent a house on the beach, but were so glad that we didn't, as this house is a hop or short kayak to the beach, at the end of the day were came back to privacy, Short drive to Hanalai, and surfing at Anini. Well stocked beach supplies as well!

Wonderful house and location...poor customer service

  • 3 of 5

Overall we had a lovely stay, however the trip started out much less than ideal. After booking our reservations, I printed out the driving directions and house key access code as usually done in the event of poor cell reception. Upon reaching the house around midnight, the access to the lock box did not work. It was the wrong code. There is no cell phone coverage at the house so we drove back to the main road to call the owner. We called three different phone numbers listed as emergency contact phone numbers. Did not get an answer from any of them. After multiple telephone calls, attempts to access the house key, and failed efforts for other lodging, our first night in Hawaii (after 15 hours of traveling + 3 hours of despair) we parked at 3 am to sleep in a rental car.

We received a voice message from Tom in the morning and, to add insult to injury, he admitted forgetting to put his cell phone in his room AND having heard the home phone in the middle of the night, but he assumed it was a telemarketer calling and thus ignored the ringing phone. He said the lock box code we had had not been used in years. He gave us the correct code and we were finally able to get in.

Linda was out of town and reported having problems with her cell phone, so she didn't get our message until the next day. So all in all, a very loose definition of what it means to be "emergency contact" phone numbers.

Linda later admitted she had drafted an email to us which contained the correct code to the lock box. But for some reason the email was left in her draft box and had not actually been sent. We never got it.

They eventually offered to provide a refund for that first night (that we didn't use the house). But they didn't make it convenient. Instead of applying the refund to our credit card, we had to take time out of our vacation to drive to their house to receive a cash refund.

On the upside, the house was a lovely place. We enjoyed our stay after getting some sleep and freshening up after the unfortunate experience. The house is located in a beautiful area of Kauai. One cannot frown on such a tranquil property that is walking distance to the beach with amazing sounds of ocean waves and birds in song. However, I cannot say we will return to Summer's Rental property. My rating does not reflect the vacation rental itself, but the poor customer service. We truly enjoyed the house and its proximity to the beach.

Owner's Response: With deep regret, this was an unfortunate occurrence. We again express our sincere apology and provided a cash refund for one night stay. While in New York, I lost my cell phone in a taxi and was unaware that an emergency call was made to my cell phone leaving my husband as the only contact. My husband was unaware of the late arrival (my error) and assumed the phone call that came in at 12:28 am was a solicitation and did not pick up the phone. I’m pleased to know the accommodation was beyond your expectations and that you enjoyed your stay on our beautiful island, in spite of this ”unacceptable” customer service. Due to this valuable lesson, and offering our sincere apology, I accept your critique and thank you for your candid evaluation. Please know that this is the first occurrence of this type and I will make sure it will be the last. Linda Summers Property Manager Moloaa Mahina Hale

Comfortable House and Property

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our time at the house overall. I would say the house is much nicer than the photos depict, the kitchen is uniquely custom built with drawer fridge and freezer, which was a creative and interesting use of space. Everything you need for cooking, including oils and salt and pepper, plus there was dish soap for hand washing or the dishwasher.

The bed is also very comfortable, something that is crucial to a good stay. The ability to wash clothes was great too, though a folding clothes drying rack you could put up inside would help a great deal. When it's raining and windy and your clothes are hanging outside it does take a lot longer to get them dry.

Mother nature did dampen the experience, there was terrible flooding shortly before our arrival. This made the ocean inaccessible due to runoff of chemicals, sewage and mud, so the waters all around the island were brown. They beginning of the bay was also littered with natural and human debris. But that's not the owner's or the house's fault, just bad timing. However it was sad to not be able to swim at all in the oceans off Kauai.

The property itself is very lovely, well manicured and fruit trees you might be lucky enough to eat from, we sadly were not there at the right time. All wheel drive is a must or at least having a good amount of clearance with the vehicle. We rented an AWD SUV and were fine getting in and out.

The house to the left is also a rental and is pretty close by. The owners did a good job putting up privacy fencing so you felt fairly private, but it wasn't as private as I had hoped when I booked it. The neighbor's house overlooks the back seating area, which was not a big deal but also not ideal.

Wonderful house and great stay, even in bad weather :)

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay here despite some wild weather. When we arrived we were greeted by the lovely neighbors who brought us a bouquet of handpicks flowers and instantly fell in love with the breezy open cottage and nice sized deck overlooking the river. The house is perfect for a couple or small family and is fully equipped with beach equipment, laundry, outdoor seating etc. and makes for a very relaxing visit.

Unfortunately the weekend of our stay was the same weekend when the island was hit by a major storm and experienced massive flooding. We awoke to a flash flood on the property but were safe and dry in the house which never lost power or had any cause for concern as to the stability of the house. Linda and Tom were very responsive and made sure that we were okay and were able to drive out safely (which we were) and we continued to enjoy our stay after the flood receded.

The kitchen was lovely with all the amenities one would need to cook meals on the property and though we weren't able to kayak on the river down to the beach the access to the river is lovely and plant life around the house is lush and plentiful.

We would absolutely recommend this property and wished we had been able to stay longer to enjoy it in sunny weather.

one tip for future renters: Rent a car with 4WD - the road into the property is very rugged and in the rain gets quite muddy and slick and try to arrive at the house during daylight hours - it would have been very difficult to navigate to the house in the dark.

Car: necessary

Moloaa Mahina Hale (House of the Lazy Moon) is unique because it is a rare and comfortable retreat for those seeking a private and somewhat secluded location. You can hear and smell the ocean but get only a tiny glimpse from your cottage which is only a stones throw away. Become part of the small community for your stay. You can take a short five minute walk to beautiful Moloaa Bay which is an interesting beach offering surfing, snorkeling, sunbathing and beach combing. Take an easy pathway to the north all along the Bay to where it ends at a fenced Bird Reserve. Due to limited public access and parking, Moloaa Bay is not very well attended making it one of the more private beaches on Kauai. You are 3 miles from the Anahola General Store providing sufficient convenience items. and is located next door to the Anahola Post Office and the Famous Ono Char Burger Stand. Moloaa is located half way between Anahola and Kilauea Town. You are only 10 minutes to the Sugar Mill Town of Kilauea and it's famous Light House recently named after Senator " Daniel Inouye " and Bird Refuse Center and 20 minutes away from Hanalei Town with lots of shops and restaurants and the beautiful Hanalei Bay. Drive out of Moloaa Valley to view other wonders of The Magical Garden Island

Other Activities: Kayaking, Snorkeling, Surfing, Hiking
