This 2000 square foot, million dollar custom executive Penthouse Suite sleeps 8-10 and sits high atop the 7th floor of a ski-in/ski-out condominium on the slopes of Purgatory Mountain at Durango Mountain Resort. Panoramic views overlooking the Needles Mountains, ski slopes, and the heart of the Durango Mountain Ski Village await you when you arrive at this premier location on the mountain.

Less than 50 yards to the ski lift, the Penthouse includes a fully equipped granite kitchen with eating bar, separate formal dining room, living room with all leather furniture and fold out sleeper, large plasma TV, master bedroom with fireplace and bathroom with jetted tub, guest bedroom that sleeps 4 with and adjacent full bathroom, 3 fireplaces and a separate but adjoining large Studio Suite that sleeps up to 4 in a queen murphy bed and a queen sleeper sofa. The attached studio suite has a living room with fireplace, kitchenette with dining area, separate bath, and private deck with its own panoramic views. The Studio makes a fabulous Master Bedroom Suite, or utilize the 'sliding wall' in the studio to provide 2 separate queen sleeping areas. This studio suite has direct access to the Penthouse, as well as its own outside entrance, making this combination ideal for multiple families. The Penthouse and studio combined create a luxurious 2000 sq. ft. suite that sleeps 8-10 with plenty of room for the entire family to gather, or each can be rented separately to accommodate smaller groups.

Our Penthouse provides all of the amenities that you would expect to find in a custom suite of this size. This is a very private corner unit surrounded by decks for your enjoyment and outdoor entertainment, complete with large private hot tub, and separate deck access from the master bedroom for enjoying that morning cup of coffee or watching the sunset over the mountains. Two additional public hot tubs are available all year around.

During the summer months enjoy the on-site pool and hot tubs, and the family fun center including miniature golf and the super slide located at the opposite end of the building.

October is particularly beautiful with Aspens turning the 'Million Dollar Mile' and surrounding mountainsides into a canvas of brilliant gold. Guest of the complex also enjoy access to the residence pool, hot tubs, and exercise facilities located on site. Elevators from the covered parking garage to the penthouse keep you dry and eliminates climbing any stairs.

Historic Downtown Durango is a short 25 minute drive from the slopes, where you will find plenty of fine dining, shopping in quaint boutiques, fly fishing in the Animas River, white water rafting, miles of biking and hiking trails, hunting in the surrounding mountains, and golfing at Hillcrest Golf Course. While in Durango don't miss riding the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, the summer rodeo and motorcycle rally, or visiting the intriguing Anasazi Indian Ruins less than an hour away.

This is the ideal vacation home for small family reunions, wedding parties, corporate retreats, or several couples that just want to get away together. If you are looking for that private vacation retreat with fabulous views and direct access to the slopes, you'll love our place!

Perfect for our family of 5

  • 5 of 5

Eolus building is a fantastic location. This unit has 2 beds and 2 livings, 3 baths. The kids played video games in the 2nd living. I agree with other comments. This would have been awkward to have someone besides kids stay in the 2nd living. It's a queen murphy bed that would block the access to the bathroom when lowered. We had invited my inlaws and I am *so glad they couldn't come due to the lack of a true 3rd bedroom. Our queen bedroom was comfy. We loved the hot tub on the deck. Everything was well taken care of. We would stay here again.

Nice space, fantastic views, convenient skiing

  • 4 of 5

Amazing mountain views! The hot tub is great after skiing. The kitchen has everything, even hand mixer, muffin tins, crockpot. Good room to spread out--with 5 tall people that's impressive!

The listing is accurate. The studio can be awkward if used as bedroom and living area since beds have to be put away (one a couch, the other a murphy that becomes the dining table). Those mattresses would be better with a foam top. The master bed is very high. Bunk beds fit people under 6'. Multiple thermostats are nice and the heat works well (tip: if too hot/cold, turn until it clicks, ignore numbers). The leather couch and large dining table are great for hanging out.

The place feels pretty clean but we did laugh when the sun came out because the windows had been washed by someone quite short. The hot tub and bathrooms felt clean. We couldn't get the steam shower to work. Plenty of blankets and pillows; the recliners are comfy. The place could use a few small tables next to chairs or for a night stand in the studio.

The owner is responsive and the info binder helpful but the car plate wasn't clear (might be the plastic thing with a key?) and there isn't a phone. If the fire alarm goes off and it isn't serious, you have to call a number. We used the studio oven for a pizza and it set off the alarm, not sure why. Luckily, two of our party got cell signal and could call, but some of us didn't get a signal. If you don't have a signal, be extra careful when cooking.

As for Purgatory, we ate only at the pizza place. The pizza smelled good but the mac+cheese seems like dolled up kraft. Next time we'll try the outdoor bar, which looks fun. Halfway to Heaven is good for mementos and the outdoor store has a nice selection. The little market is sparse. Ski instructors are really good. If you aren't a confident skier get a lesson that includes coming down the main hill (like from lift 4), not just on the beginner slopes. I recommend making your own meals. Skiing ends early so there's time to relax in the evenings--although mountain skiing took a lot out of us and we went to bed early.

Yes, I recommend the property and would stay again. Pick up liquor/beer, groceries, papa murphy pizza (a large will fit in studio freezer), water (the tap water is fine but hard), and stop for donuts at Durango Doughworks on your way up so you don't have to leave the resort. We were glad to watch storms from the hot tub instead of trying to drive. The condo was comfortable and cozy!

Durango Penthouse

  • 3 of 5

This is NOT A 3 BEDROOM penthouse. There is a murphy bed that comes out of the wall in the attached efficiency space that is difficult to use as a bedroom because the bed opens within 18" to the kitchen sink and makes getting around it almost impossible without stumping your toe or having it bite your ankle. The mattress is maybe 6" deep and not comfortable. There are no bedside tables/surfaces, so if you like tissue, water, clock, etc. by the bed during the night it either has to go on the floor (eww) or you get out of bed to retrieve. The overhead light was almost impossible to figure out, but thanks to one of the guys in our group who likes a challenge, it was discovered you have to hold the switch down continually to turn on/off. Simple printed directions would have been nice, especially since it wasn't the only switch like that in the space. Printed directions for locking the door as you leave would have also been nice. Just inconvenient to stand and waste time when you're trying to get out to go have fun. I've always heard it said every Innkeeper should sleep a night in each bedroom. Don't think that's happened here even though the owner was super nice to deal with.

Other than that, how did we like the play, Mrs. Lincoln? We enjoyed it. Perfect time of year to get out of the Texas heat and not many people staying, so no crowds to deal with. Space was clean when we arrived and linens were plentiful. Well appointed kitchen and view was fun.

Now that we know what it offers, we would definitely go back, but not as 3 couples expecting 3bedrms/3 baths.

THANKS!

Owner's Response: We have owned this condo for over 10 years and have always had very satisfied tenants with many 5-star reviews, (this is the first and only 3-star) so we are quite surprised at this review. Our listing clearly states that, in addition to the 1500 sq. ft. main unit, our penthouse suite includes an attached 500 sq. ft. studio apartment, and describes the Penthouse and Studio in detail, with lots of photos, and the sleeping accommodations. The studio is MUCH MORE than just a 3rd bedroom, and has its own separate living room with wood burning fireplace, large full granite bathroom, fully equipped kitchenette and dining area, and a private deck. Although it can be opened directly to the main unit, the studio also has its own private outside entry. We have indeed personally stayed in our Penthouse Suite, including the studio many times, and find it very comfortable. Previous guests have often commented that the studio was much more than they expected, and functioned as an extra living quarters, as well as an over-the-top master bedroom. We work hard to ensure that our Penthouse Suite is one of the finest accommodations available at the resort, and we sincerely apologize if it did not meet the expectations of this guest.

Great property, could use a touch of TLC

  • 4 of 5

First off and most importantly: This is a great condo in a great location with some very good amenities. I recommend staying here either with a large family or a couple of families. The master bedroom and second bedroom in the main unit are good and can sleep 5 comfortably. The attached studio can sleep more although the beds aren't quite as comfortable there. The property just needs a little bit of maintenance - cabinets that won't stay shut, a grill that didn't work, etc. Overall it's very good, minus one star for the list of little things that need to be fixed.
