Lonely Planet Loves our Private Riverfront Cottage, and You Will Too!
Hidden away on one of Kauai’s most lush and beautiful estates, Coco Cabana offers complete privacy and all the romance of a jungle bungalow.
Lonely Planet named Coco Cabana one of the best and most affordable accommodations in Hiena/Hanalei, and for good reason. The one-bedroom, one-and-a-half bathroom cottage offers all the comfort and serenity you’d expect from an upscale rental home, but at budget-friendly rates.
Before we get into details, read part of the glowing review left by Katherine:
“We just booked our third stay at the Coco Cabana. If you like all the comforts of home while experiencing tropical Hawaii, the Coco Cabana is the place to stay. The house is very secluded down a quiet, narrow lane in a verdant jungle clearing right on a river. On my desk at work sits a picture I took while standing on the lanai of the view looking up the river through the jungle with the mountains in the back ground. People can't believe that was the view we enjoyed right from the house!?'
The cottage overlooks banks of the leisurely Wainiha River and is tucked away in five acres of palm trees, bamboo, and vines. The estate was once a taro plantation; today it’s home to dozens of species of native birds. Other than the gurgling river and singing birds, the only thing you’ll hear is the occasional patter of rain against the roof. Coco Cabana is truly the perfect setting for a honeymoon or other romantic getaway.
While you could easily spend your entire vacation enjoying the view of the Mountains, slow moving river and wildlife , Coco Cabana is only minutes from the North Shore’s best beaches, including Hanalei Bay, Lumahai Beach, Shell Beach, Tunnels Beach, Hiena Beach, and Ke’e Beach. Adventurous travelers will also enjoy snorkeling (the best is on the North Shore), hiking (the World Famous )Napali Coast, which is about 2 miles from the cottage, cave exploring, golfing, kayaking, whale watching and more.
You can hear the river from most of the rooms in the house, and the living room balcony has a full view of the water below. Coco Cabana also boasts a fully equipped kitchen, a wraparound lanai.
While Hanalei is a small Hawaiian town, and a North Shore favorite, the rest of the island is full of charm.

The Coco Cabana property was once a Taro Plantation. I am drawn to old Hawaii and privleged to own a piece of it's history.
As the only home on the estate, Coco Cabana is very private and secluded, embraced by a lush tropical jungle, and situated along a serene river.
It is close to many spectacular island activities yet isolated enough to relax in peace and quiet. There's a small general store at the beginning of the old country road.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Coco Cabana Jungle Bungalow. The property is truly beautiful, and private. The wrap-around deck overlooks a river and a lush landscape. We spent an entire day just hanging around the property and enjoying the river and the birds. The interior is also very nice--everything was clean when we arrived, and in good condition. It has a more rustic, cozy feel than a hotel would. The bathroom has a jetted tub and was well-stocked with shampoo, soup, and other necessities. Even aloe vera for when I accidentally missed a spot with my sunscreen. The kitchen was also well-stocked. We used the kitchen daily and saved a lot of money by not eating out every day. The only downside is that if you are not a heavy sleeper, the roosters will likely wake you up in the early morning. That is inevitable, though, since there are roosters everywhere in Kaua'i. Earplugs helped us sleep in. Highly recommend!
My husband and I were here for our honeymoon and we had the most perfect time. The property is so well thought out and considerate. We really had no need for anything. One of my favorite parts was simply seeing the lush greenery surrounding us through every window. Thank you so much for providing the perfect backdrop as we begin this new chapter together!
Beautiful and private. long dirt part of road full of potholes, but not a big deal. appreciated having condiments in kitchen, as we did a lot of cooking. also, the beach stuff was great. we snorkeled, boogie boarded, used beach shoes, cooler and chairs. even bug spray. nice to have all that there! Perfect romantic hideaway foe our anniversary! we want to come back and would DEFINATELY recommend it
We really enjoyed our time in Hanalei and Coco Cabana was a great place to stay. We enjoyed the feeling of seclusion but we're still very close to everything the North Shore has to offer.
We were looking for an off-the-beaten-path location that wasn't a Yurt but still gave us a sense of island flair. Coco Cabana is just as described and then some. The river that runs through the property was relaxing and constant. The grounds were very well maintained and private. The road to the place was a little rough but worth the trip and just what we wanted. While secluded, the beach was only a few minutes away from the bungalow. If you're looking for a place to get away from it all but not to far then this is the place.
I first visited Kauai in 2015 and liked it so much decided to return in 2016 (a good way to turn 50). For the second trip, my surfing companion and I decided we would stay at Coco Cabana and the choice proved to be a fantastic option. The North Shore of Kauai has become my favorite place on the planet, and Coco Cabana is simply amazing accommodation in such as beautiful setting. I think 'peaceful' could be defined as spending some time here. The short drive to the beaches and Hanalei is really convenient, and the drive itself is just so beautiful. The house is perfectly set out with everything you could possibly need for a relaxing time. I loved it and would recommend it to anyone with an appreciation of beautiful peaceful surrounds. I'll be back.
It's definitely a 5 star view of the river and mountains. Cottage is small but very comfortable with very nice furnishings and well equipped kitchen. We really enjoyed our stay. It's 3 miles west of Hanalei.
