Carmel House Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, sleeps 6

Step back in time in this rare, beautiful, original Carmel redwood cottage full of timeless charm, nestled in an enchanting garden with fireplace, stone patio, antique furniture and original art. Designed by famous Early California architect Julia Morgan, this wonderfully preserved, immaculate home is a historic gem of old Carmel.

Our Great-Aunt Etta built this cottage in 1919 and operated her own bed and breakfast here, offering 'breakfast in bed, lunch on the patio, and dinner by the fire.' Our family has lovingly cared for this beautiful redwood gem for three generations--and now are are pleased to share it with you. Experience the authentic atmosphere of old-time Carmel Point--just two blocks to Carmel Beach, four to River Beach.

The Cottage sleeps 4-6 in three bedrooms. Amenities include wireless internet, cable TV, DVD, laundry, microwave. Our wonderful caretaker lives next door. Rental by week or month (3-4 day weekends OK in winter).

Romantic Getaway or Family Gathering: This is not a store-bought modern luxury rental--it is a beautifully maintained, enchanting little historic cottage tended with love through three generations. Perfect for a family gathering, a romantic honeymoon, or a special reunion with your best friends. Most of our guests return year after year.

Our grant-aunt Etta operated the Little Cottage of River Winds as a bed and breakfast from 1919 until the 1960s, living in the tiny front bedroom and fixing meals in the galley kitchen. She offered 'breakfast in bed, lunch on the patio, and dinner by the fire.' Etta believed in a cozy cottage and a wild garden--and her spirit lives on in the charm--and sometimes the quirks--of this soulful place.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Our stay at Aunt Etta's cottage was just what we wanted. The cottage is comfortable, welcoming, neat as a pin and truly has all the comforts of home. It is an easy walk to the beach, to "downtown" Carmel or the mission. During our stay, the gardens were in bloom and they are beautiful. It is easy to understand why the family who owns it loves this home...it is a treasure.

Beautiful, relaxing cottage

  • 5 of 5

We came here for our yearly family vacation and were happy to stay here. The cottage has a beautiful garden and was very peaceful and relaxing. It's only a couple blocks to the beach and we went for daily walks. The beds were very comfortable and the rooms are charming. We loved the cottage and would stay here again.

A true home away from home.

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful space in a beautiful place. The cottage is clean, cozy and comfortable. It only took a day or two for us to begin referring to the cottage as 'home' when we were out and about taking in the sites. I'm convinced this type of connection cannot happen in a hotel or motel establishment. We took the very short walk to the beach daily simply because we could and enjoyed listening to the sound of the ocean at night as we sat in front of the fire in the fireplace reading. I'm sure we will find time on our calendar in the next year to make it back to the cottage for some additional rest and relaxation. As a couple who grew up within driving distance from the shores of Cape Cod, that's really saying something! Thank you again for sharing this wonderful space with others.

Perfect cozy cottage

  • 5 of 5

Three generations for three nights for Thanksgiving --felt just like being in our own house! We credit that to the very personal feel of this family home, right down to the photo album in the living room. It was clean and comfortably set up, including soap for the washer!

The house itself is in a pretty garden setting and in very working order. The historic nature was evident without being inconvenient. Location was perfect for us: a block or so from the beach walk, 6 or so blocks to Ocean Avenue, and just a couple blocks from Thanksgiving dinner at Mission Ranch.

Overall, it was a delightful stay in a delightful cottage!

Gracious Garden Cottage

  • 5 of 5

It was a delight to enjoy this Carmel Point classic. It is a true heritage home. The home has a spacious feel, with a wonderful great room with views over the lovely garden. We also enjoyed the sunny patio for meals and coffee. The three bedrooms are pleasant, though small. It is an old home, with some quirks that come with age. But what grace.

Carmel Point is a fantastic location. The ocean is 3 blocks in two directions, with great walks on bluffs and beaches. Point Lobos and Big Sur beckon across the bay to the south - Pebble Beach to the north.

Inviting, Like a Family Heirloom

  • 5 of 5

We rolled into Carmel in the late afternoon with pretty kranky kids of 5 and 6. Then we turned off Ocean onto Junipero; Right away my girl says, "This is a fairy village!". We pull up to the Cottage of River Winds and walk up the garden path and discover the pictures are not even close to as awesome as this place. My son asks, "Can we live here?", I say yes.

If you are looking for a place to relax with your family in a cottage that feels like you belong, then the Cottage of River Winds is the place for you. Coming from modest roots, I felt like this place was an heirloom from a long lost aunt 'Etta'. Then looking out the large windows to take in the well maintained informal garden with my Wife's favorite, Alstroemeria, growing right outside. It all felt just right; Totally authentic without a hint of pretension.

We REALLY used the kitchen. Aside from a serious need for a sharp knife, LOL, we made some really great food; Braised short ribs with

As the week went on I reflected on how blessed I felt for my life and thankful that I'd had the opportunity to have a trip like this. I'm lucky; In love and family. I couldn't want more. Thank you so much, Krys, Doug, and Aunt Etta.
