I am the director emeritus of the North Star Ballet and have lived in Fairbanks for 28 years. I am happy to share my experience of living in the area.
Norman Shelburne purchased this house in 2001
Friends from California came for a visit - they enjoyed it so much that after their stay they suggested I open a Vacation Rental so that some of their friends could have an Alaskan experience!

Part of my family came to Fairbanks Alaska from South Carolina for Thanksgiving. My husband turned 50 this year and wanted to see the Northern Lights. We had 4 adults and 1 really great 14 year old, we stayed at The Knoll House. When we arrived in Fairbanks (coming from SC keep in mind we get about 1/2 of an inch of snow annually) there was about 10 inches of snow on the ground and still falling. We got our rental van and headed out. When we got to the knoll house our van would not go up the hill. We carried out luggage up the very long driveway in the snow, and we laughed all the way, especially when my mother in law fell in a huge snow bank. The house is beautiful and very homey, we cooked our thanksgiving meal in the home, and just had a get time, we did a dog sled tour, snow machine tour, and drove to Chena Hot springs. We had to trade the van in on a 4x4 which was able to go upstate drive. We bought sleds at Walmart and we all had a great time going down the driveway. Norman the caretaker was very friendly and had our drive scraped a couple of times, but it just kept on snowing, I think we had about 36 inches by the 4 th day, and we loved it!!!! My son made snow tunnels in the banks that he could get into. Even though the northern lights were not visible the whole 7 nights we were there, it just means that we get to go back and try again! And the Knoll House is where we would like to stay.
I do recommend a 4x4 if going in snowy weather though.
Fjell and Knoll could not have been more perfect for our Family Reunion. The houses are spacious, beautifully appointed, and have magnificent views. We used Knoll as our gathering place for cooking and BBQ, and when our family grew to 26 we were able to secure the Upper Room also! It was by far the Alaskan Experience we wanted to give our guests, and the perfect venue to support all our activities. I highly recommend!
We spent 4 nights at the Knoll house during our two week trip to Alaska and this was our favorite of the accommodations. It's too stinking cute for words! We hadn't seen many pictures of Knoll before we arrived but were very pleasantly surprised when we arrived. The house was well appointed, well cared for, decorated very nicely and was very welcoming. We enjoyed the views too!
A previous reviewer complained about limited water during their stay...at check in Norman explained to us that they have a water tank to provide water and that he is happy to get more water whenever you need it, but please be conservative. We were 5 people, 4 nights and we never ran out! If you are environmentally conscious this is a non-issue.
Overall we very much enjoyed our stay and hope to come back one day to see the northern lights! I wouldn't hesitate to book here again! My only suggestion would be to add a good mixing bowl & measuring cups to the kitchen....I think those were the only two items I needed but couldn't find - they very well could have been there and I just overlooked them. A hair dryer would have also been a nice addition :)
Thanks again for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home, we had a lovely time!
We kicked off our Alaska vacation by staying in both of these magnificent homes. As a family of 18, we needed plenty of room and were so pleased with the accommodations and amenities these homes offered. In addition, the owner was amazing to work with. We could not have been happier with our stay.
I stayed with my entire family at the Knoll house end of May and I am short for words for how beautifully appointed this home was. It has the most gorgeous views from every room in this house. It had all the amenities you would need to spend a memorable vacation. Normal was a wonderful host and was quick to respond to any questions we had during our stay and prior to making the reservation. I would make a trip to Fairbanks just to stay at this house. Thanks Norman!
A team of research scientists and educators stayed here for 2 weeks while studying the Aurora. This house well exceeded our expectations as did Norman - He was great! Every time we had a question he was quick to reply and he was very attentive the whole time we were there. The pictures do not to it justice - the house is gorgeous. We hope to come back next year and would stay here again without hesitation. Its close to everything in Fairbanks and the view is phenomenal!
Chena Hot Springs is a comfortable drive from the house - it has a swimming pool fed by natural hot springs
