About Jennifer Elwood

Our family consists of two Atlanta area professionals with three children who keep us very busy. One of our favorite things to do is plan family vacations. One thing we know to be true in raising children is that the days are long and the years are short. We are doing our best to fully enjoy this season!

Jennifer Elwood purchased this cabin in 2007

Why Jennifer Elwood chose Ellijay

The North Georgia mountains offers our family the respite we need to recharge. Our riverfront property is ideally suited for both relaxation and recreation. We enjoy spending time at Shady River Retreat and venturing out to Blue Ridge for shopping and entertainment.

What makes this cabin unique

You will love the swing on the over sized screened in porch and the wide river frontage. The fire pit is a great place for yummy smores and evening chats!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Just a short note to let you know we really enjoyed our vacation at the cabin. The Smores were a nice surprise especially since my granddaughter asked me on the way there if I remembered to bring marshmallows. The water was a very nice surprise. Your pictures do not show how beautiful it really is.

So much more than a retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Shady River is so much more than a Retreat - we truly felt like we were in a small slice of mountain paradise. We have travelled quite a bit all over the world with our 3 daughters and the Elwood's cabin was the perfect getaway barely more than an hour from our TN home. We had everything we needed in a clean and well-appointed cabin - lots of space in the bedrooms for everyone to spread out, excellent layout of the den/dining room/open kitchen which connects to the huge screened-in porch where we had all of our meals together at the picnic table. The pool table downstairs was a huge hit!

The property is set on a private road so traffic is minimal and neighbors are very friendly. We roasted marshmallows for smores around the firepit each night and lazed about in the Adirondack chairs while the kids played around the riverbank. We brought our Enoo hammocks and were able to set up two between two trees to continue our relaxing weekend. The owners have provided a bunch of tubes for water play, and we walked a ways up the river and put in alongside an open stretch of road for a "long enough" tube ride that was both over calm and small rapids which deposited us right in front of the house.

The photos really are not able to encompass the breadth of what the property has to offer... in addition to a nice soak in the covered hot tub. The hot tub was on and music was playing for us as we arrived - that was a nice touch for kickstarting the weekend! We saw tons of deer and although my husband didn't catch any fish (don't forget to get your GA fishing license), he more enjoyed the peacefulness of the process. Perfect weekend, thanks for your hospitality!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the kind review! We also feel it is a small slice of paradise and while it's not far at all from two major cities--Chattanooga and Atlanta, it feels worlds away. Glad you enjoyed some family time together and hope to host you all in the future.--The Elwood Family

Great place, we loved the house especially the big porch. It rained one day but we were happy on the porch and the kids never felt shut in. Beautiful place would recommend to everyone except maybe people who have trouble with stairs. Thanks for sharing your home we hope to go back next year.

Resting and Relaxing on the River

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic week at This wonderful river retreat! There’s so much to do, I wish we could stay another week or two so we could see more of it. The Nearby Apple festival was great for getting the family in the mood for fall. We enjoyed one day on Lake Carter where we rented a pontoon boat. The views were wonderful. It took a full day to see all the unique shops downtown. Highly recommend Lee’s for lunch. We also enjoyed a day at the Casino which was about 45 minutes away. The cabin was very clean and well-stocked. The views of the river are breathtaking! A+. We will be back!

Peaceful Mountain Retreat!

  • 4 of 5

Our family loved our stay at this mountain cabin by the river. The cabin was very clean and cozy. My favorite part was sitting on the porch swing, drinking coffee, and listening to the river below. The only thing I would change is the bed in the master bedroom. It was a bit small for us. We made some wonderful family memoriess and plan on coming back soon !

Exceptional opportunity for families to make memories

  • 5 of 5

Our young granddaughters (6 and 9) really enjoyed the various opportunities to play in the water--from the cabin's hot tub to the resort's indoor swimming pool. Evenings around the campfire along the river were special times for the entire family. (Does anyone want another s'more?) All three generations had so much fun that we are already planning our return trip next year. And next time, we are definitely going tubing down the river!!
