About the property

Sugar Bay House, 4 Bedrooms, 4.5 Baths, with Private Pool & Stunning Views

Live the sweet life in an elegant, hilltop villa that links St. Croix’s intriguing past with today’s most luxurious lifestyles. This charming, West Indian great house embraces a 40-foot private pool and overlooks the sea with a stunning view of the Salt River Bay where Columbus arrived with his fleet in 1493.

Enter through double gates of solid mahogany to a spacious outdoor gallery. Here, catch up on your reading in a colonial planter’s chair under the shade of palm trees, or stretch out on one of three decadent cushioned, lounge beds and enjoy the sun or the stars.

A breezy gazebo is perfect for lunch, complete with a handy grill and speakers for background music. And at cocktail time, Harry’s Bar is irresistible—it’s your own private poolside pub!

From the pool area, Harry’s Bar leads into a magnificent Danish yellow great room and dining area with a spectacular window wall facing the Caribbean. Shutters lower at the touch of a button if you decide to darken the room for a movie and an armoire entertainment center is complete with DVD/VCR, iPod docking station, satellite television, and even Sirius radio. Ahead is a crisp white kitchen with all the culinary gear you might need.

The villa’s bedrooms all face the pool through individual French doors and are decorated in subtle tropical hues with tasteful classic West Indian-style furnishings. All four have private baths and air conditioning to use if you wish, though island trade winds will provide natural cooling. You’ll appreciate thoughtful touches provided for your stay-bath amenities, beach towels-even Sugar Bay House dressing gowns.

Running the length of the pool are three bedrooms. Two have twin beds that can be converted to kings, the first in spun-sugar pink with a shower/tub bath and the second in powder blue with Wedgewood accents. The third bedroom, with its soft mango glow and palm theme accessories, houses a king-size four poster bed.

At the end of the pool, steps lead up to the fourth bedroom’s pavilion with pale lime green walls, a queen-sized four poster bed, and tester canopy overhead. This spacious suite has its own wet bar with refrigerator, and another set of French doors to a patio.

Rooms feature high, beamed ceilings, traditionally employed in island residences for centuries and throughout the house are finely-crafted mahogany furnishings inspired by the plantation era, including hand-made local tiles in Danish yellow. Look closely you’ll see inlaid accents carved from authentic ballast brick brought to the island on 19th century sailing ships that carried sugar and rum back to Europe.

From the great room or the pool area, watch sailors come and go on the great bay below an outdoor museum designated as the Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve. Tour the park’s Visitor Contact Station, enjoy a refreshing swim at its white sandy beach visible from your villa, or stop by the marina to arrange a guided kayak expedition through the bay. And if you are a Scuba diver, or would enjoy learning, everything you’ll need is available at the marina’s dive center.

Your villa is ideally located at the center of the island’s north shore, an easy drive to either of the island’s two colonial towns, Christiansted or Frederiksted, for shopping, sightseeing, and fine dining. And just minutes away is Cane Bay, a spot favored by locals for its diving, snorkeling, and beachfront restaurants.

Whether you choose water sports or exploration to fill your days, you’ll find Sugar Bay House to be an ideal base. But you may decide to spend most days simply enjoying your delightful villa a destination itself that you’ll want to return to year after year.

About Jackie

Hello! My name is Jackie and I am the very lucky owner of Sugar Bay House. My husband and I fell in love with St Croix in 1986 and bought a house on this very same site in 1987. That house was destroyed by Hurricane Hugo but out of this catastrophe came the opportunity to build our dream house in 1994, the current Sugar Bay House. We have traveled to many parts of the world, being English and Australian ( and now American) but we always returned to the beauty and tranquility of St Croix and especially Sugar Bay House. We have had so many wonderful, fun times at Sugar Bay House with our family and friends and we hope to have many more. We invite you to create your own wonderful memories whatever the occasion!

Jackie purchased this house in 1994

Why Jackie chose St. Croix

The views from the house are simply amazing. It is impossible to capture them in photos. The location is also close to so many great beaches and restaurants and yet is still tranquil and peaceful. We also like being able to easily reach either Fredericksted or Christiansted, the two main towns on the island. In addition, overlooking the Salt River National Park where Columbus first landed is very cool!

What makes this house unique

Our outdoor living area with the amazing views and great places to either eat or sun is wonderful. Tropical living should be outdoor living and at Sugar Bay House that is certainly true. Our outdoor beds are also so relaxing whether reading a book during the day or star gazing with a glass of wine or a tropical cocktail at night. And of course there is Harry's Bar, the heart of the house where everyone gathers and shares stories at the end of a beautiful day in paradise.

Fantastic Place

  • 5 of 5

My over-riding impression upon arriving at Sugar Bay House is that it is in a perfect spot, with a magnificent view all around it and that the accommodations are really relaxing and comfortable.

So let's deconstruct that sentence.

Firstly - The perfect spot.

Sugar Bay House is situated on the top of a small hill overlooking Salt River Bay on the North Shore. We drove around this wonderful island and we thought that the Salt River area was the most interesting, beautiful and quiet place upon the island. There are a few houses nearby, so it's quiet. The Salt River area, has an interesting little Marina, through which I walked nearly every day. There are interesting boats and people there and I ended up getting to know of few of them a little.

Its an easy walk down the hill from the house to the little beach or Marina, but a little more effort is needed to get back up again, but it's worth it. The nearby beach was good for swimming and lazing. Everywhere you look around the house from the terrace and during the walk down to the beach is full of colorful flowers growing on bushes everywhere.

It's really easy to get around St. Croix to visit all the great beaches which are never far away. Most had a beach bar on them, white sand and clear turquoise water. Some of the roads on the island are a little rough though, so you might want to rent an SUV. We didn't, we had a small fiesta which was fine but sometimes not quite fit for purpose, especially around the rain forest.

So now to the second point - the view.

I spent so much time sitting on a bench under a covered table at the corner of the deck just looking at the view; it's stunning and it's interesting. I watched the boats coming to and fro and even 2 getting wrecked in a squall one weekend. You can see for miles in many directions. Sea planes flew over head, birds dropped by for a chat and even an iguana dropped by to bury some of her eggs. I was there everyday for many hours, during the mornings, days and especially at night - all right I couldn't see much then , but still loved it. There was always a gentle breeze blowing by, that was cooling on a hot day, but never cold.I think it's sitting at that table that I miss most as I look back to those heavenly two weeks there.

The Pool was great and actually deep enough to dive in and long enough to swim lengths.

Now the third point - the comfortable house.

To be honest, I wasn't in the house too much but when I was, I was asleep in a comfortable bed with all th

A Stay In Pardise

We had been to St. Croix several years ago as a cruise ship stop. We always wanted to come back here for a longer visit but airfare and flights were difficult to plan. Finally the flights were available and convenient so we decided to go for it! We found Sugar Bay House on VRBO and all who were traveling agreed that I should book this house. We were not disappointed!

From the moment we were greeted by a member of the Vacation St. Croix team at the airport, until we got on the plane to return home, we were impressed! The house is absolutely amazing! The view is awesome from nearly every vantage point. The pool area had plenty of dining and lounging options. The pool was large and very refreshing. The kitchen was well equipped for cooking and the refrigerator has an ice maker that worked really well. There is also a small refrigerator in Harry's Bar. We all loved Harry's! It was fun to mix up some interesting Caribbean cocktails there! The outdoor kitchen/grilling area also came in handy.

The livingroom area is extremely spacious and comfortable. The TV and surround sound worked well, although we rarely watched TV.

Each of the four bedrooms was comfortable and had a nice attached bath. Another small outdoor table for the back of the house was delivered while we were there and that's a nice place to sit to see a different view. We saw a cruise ship leaving port one evening.

Although it was difficult to pry ourselves away from the comforts and views of Sugar Bay House, we enjoyed snorkeling at nearby Cane Bay, also a Buck Island snorkeling tour with Caribbean Sea Adventures, Cruzan Rum Factory Tour, scenic drives, beaches, and numerous restaurants and bars. We never had a bad meal, including those we prepared at the house and some that we brought in from the BBQ stands.

My son said it was one of the most relaxing trips he'd been on and all of us agreed. We will definitely try to get back to Sugar Bay House in the near future. I would not hesitate in renting this lovely villa. Communication was prompt and helpful.

Sugar Bay House is OUTSTANDING!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

My group of 8 family members and friends enjoyed 2 wonderful weeks at the Sugar Bay House. The location is perfect from the gorgeous views of Salt River Bay and the Caribbean to the ease of driving to Christiansted, Fredricksted and Cane Bay.

The house is very well designed all on one level around the pool. There are plenty of comfortable spaces to gather (inside & outside) all together for dining, playing games or watching TV; as well as enough spots to curl up alone with a book, sunbath or take a nap. The kitchen is very well stocked with cookware, dishes, utensils, appliances, spices, paper towels, trash bags, detergent, etc. The bedrooms and bathrooms were clean and comfortable with plenty of linens, towels and hot water.

We loved Harry's Bar :) Not only was it well stocked, but we enjoyed gathering around the bar for lunch or for cocktails in the evening. The pool is a big and well positioned so that it gets sun all day and is protected from the strongest winds.

Our compliments to the owners. They designed, decorated and maintained Sugar Bay House so very well!

Sugar Bay House

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect for our group of eight. As soon as you walk in, you felt right at home. Even with our large group there was plenty of room, we never felt crowded. One of the nicest things was how helpful the owner was. I have rented many villas/homes through vrbo and have never worked with such a gracious owner. The house has everything you need. The view was spectacular. You won't want to leave the villa. However when you do the roads are easy to drive and there are nice beaches and restaurants close by. I would definitely recommend this villa to rent.

My stay at sugar bay house could not have been more enjoyable! Waking up every morning, cup of coffee in hand, and looking out at the beautiful island of St. Croix and going to bed every night, after spending what could be an eternity, outside on the couch beds gazing at the stars is everything an island vacation should be. With it's plethora of rooms, living area, kitchen, and outdoor amenities, the sugar bay house is perfect for any size party and made for a very comfortable stay. While there's lots to do in St. Croix, and I took full advantage of the adventures and the beaches the island has to offer, the sugar bay house really makes you never want to leave the house. The pool is spectacular. I think I was in that pool at least three times a day, everyday -- it's perfect for a quick escape from the warm St. Croix air. If that's not enough, the couch in the living area should do it for you -- never have I even sat on a more comfortable couch. And even though it was such a comfortable couch, I honestly spent almost all of my time outside in the back of the house. It's such a nice place to sit and relax during the day and hang out and have fun at night. St. Croix is a beautiful island but I don't think my stay would have been anywhere near as wonderful had I not chosen to stay at the sugar bay house! The view, the location, the rooms, the back pool area -- everything at this house was perfect. I loved it!
