Escape summer's heat and come to Light Heart Retreat in Downeast Maine where the pace of life is such that one can hear themselves think AND hear the wind through the trees, the whistle of an osprey, smell the fresh scent of morning's dew and take a walk on wooded trail without running into another human being.
What we have to offer you, sanctuary for the soul, has prompted a number of our guests to pursue living in the area full time or to carve out a vacation sanctuary of their own.
Huckleberry Hideaway at Light Heart Retreat is nestled in old growth pine and spruce overlooking Taunton Bay and the Lucerne Hills to the west. From your second story deck you can look southward onto the Sacred Stone Circle, ala` Stonehenge. Looking east out the bedroom you can see the sunrise over the largest quarry at the retreat. Everywhere you look, nature greets you with a warm and welcoming smile...not another soul in sight nor is there the noise that often accompanies many vacation rentals.
You’ve found your way to magical, mystical Light Heart Retreat, where heaven touches earth. Solitude and beauty--safe sanctuary in our changing times, is beckoning you to return to your Light Heart.
The Huckleberry Hideaway was designed and built with much love and respect, with pine and granite from the retreat. Though initially planned as a one bedroom cottage for a couple or a single person on retreat, the choice to have two bedrooms has proven to be divinely inspired. Sometimes a loving couple needs to have their own space in which to dream their own dreams. And sometimes friends make good, respectful housemates to share a retreat with.
(In 2016 Light Heart is also making some exceptions for small families, if the fit is right. If you're a nature lover and feel the draw here and want to share this very special place on the planet with your children, please make an inquiry and let's see if we can make it work.)
The two bedrooms are private to each other. The master bedroom is on the second floor with a private half bath, skylights and sliders out to the west facing deck. There's a bodywork table with linens supplied in this spacious room. The first floor bedroom is immediate to the full bathroom and has a skylight and entry onto a private granite patio. This bedroom is bumped out from the main house, so guests in each bedroom have their own quiet and privacy, as desired.
Note: This cottage can serve 4, but is priced out for 2 as this is by far the more common request. If there are more than 2 guests (can accommodate 4) there is a one time surcharge of $60/per guest 3 and also for guest 4. HomeAway's on-line system cannot accommodate a one time surcharge, only a surcharge per night, so this will not show up in your quote. Any questions? call 207.669.4554
The Huck’s kitchen is well stocked with herbs. spices, oil, vinegar, foil, etc. You can cook, barbecue on the grill and even bake cookies if you want to. The dining nook table is pub style giving you great views to look out upon the changing light, birds and wildlife.
There’s a built in u-shaped window seat and comfy chairs facing the glass fronted wood stove. The radiant in-floor heat and the wood stove keep guests toasty year round. When damp, snow or cold winds keep you inside, you’ll be cozy and still connected to nature through the views provided by the ample windows.
Guests of the Huckleberry have a private outdoor hot tub on the south patio and access to a wood-fired sauna on the quarry. The stewards of the retreat maintain gardens, hiking trails and swimming areas on this 100 acre old growth forest and granite quarry ponds. There’s a library with holistic, spiritual and some mainstream reading and media.
Additional amenities include your own fire pit, a canoe on each quarry and a meditation hut that overlooks Bragdon Quarry, a serene place to meditate, canoe, sunbathe, bird watch and skinny dip.
You don’t have to pack a large bag when you visit. Your Huckleberry Friend has a laundry room with washer and dryer. You can travel light when you come here and when you leave you’ll be feeling even lighter. The stewards love to see the transformation that guests experience here reflected in a more youthful, relaxed countenance. Is the muse of Light Heart Retreat calling you?
If the Huckleberry Hideaway is a stretch for your means, please be sure to see the one bedroom Blackberry Cottage, 112158. It’s much beloved and has its own unique gifts to share with you.
Light Heart Retreat is 30 minutes from Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor and centrally located for day trips.
We do our best to provided an allergen free environment for our guests. This means that we have chosen to honor the needs of sensitive guests over pet owners. Light Heart Retreat is entirely non-smoking.
If you're looking for a place to party hardy, this isn't it.
Looking for sanctuary for the nature lover's soul? Looking for peace and quiet after sight seeing? Looking to swim in granite quarries and bake in the sun on the granite beach? Looking to experience a standing stone circle? Want to taste the best banana bread ever (got to appeal to all your senses in this screening process :) Pick blueberries? David Buell and Joanna Pinney Buell are the hard-working stewards of a very special place on planet earth, called Light Heart Retreat. David is a stone artisan, gifted pianist, poet and inspired gardener. Joanna has many years in the holistic and spiritual healing field, is an inspired cook, gardener, writer and designed the retreat houses and their own home, at Light Heart Retreat. Together David and Joanna share a deep love and respect for nature, of the Great Spirit and of humanity. They delight in seeing the transformations that happen for the guests of Light Heart Retreat. ***David made his transition back to the Great Cosmos in March 2015. Joanna is loving and living the good life at Light Heart Retreat and looking forward to returning friends and new friends yet to be made at Light Heart Retreat where heaven touches earth.
Joanna Pinney Buell purchased this cottage in 2006
The Huckleberry Hideaway is one of 2 retreat houses offered at Light Heart Retreat. No words can rightly capture the spirit of peace, tranquility and beauty that this space exudes from within and that which is part of the surroundings. This year-round house has been for adults only and is best suited to one or two couples as well as making a very wonderful retreat space for an individual. However, accommodations have been made to host a small family when we're a good match.
This is not our own home...it is a space designed and built with deep intention for those who are seeking beauty, peace, rest, renewal, peace and inspiration. Light Heart Retreat offers all of this and there is the added benefit of being just 30 minutes away from Acadia National Park with it's vistas of the Atlantic and great hiking. The Huckleberry has a fully equipped and well stocked kitchen for cooking at home or one can treat themselves to some fine dining locally.
Light Heart Retreat is the best kept secret...that's starting to be found out. Best to book early.
I love the opportunity to retreat to the Huckleberry myself, (Joanna) especially in the winter and early spring. Though the outdoor hot tub is a delight anytime, I especially enjoy it on a snowy night or a spring morning when the birds are beginning to sing. The long view from the balcony of Taunton Bay and the Lucerne Hills is is particularly nourishing to the soul when arrayed in autumn's reds and golds. I like to begin and end a winter's day in the rocking chair in front of the wood stove. There is no place I'd rather be on retreat than at our very own Huckleberry HIdeaway at Light Heart Retreat.
Our guest book is filled with many thanks for the special touches and warm welcome our guests receive at Light Heart Retreat. Guests of the Huckleberry Hideaway enjoy a homemade loaf of bread upon their arrival and have a seasonal floral arrangement on their dining room table.
There really in no place like Light Heart Retreat. Where can you go on retreat, have the comfort of a well designed retreat house, privacy, quiet, solitude, beauty, beauty, beauty...a wood-fired sauna, library and not be sharing it with 30 or more other guests? It's just us and the guests of the two retreat cottages on 100 acres with a gated entry. We offer so much that is of REAL value here. The retreat is 30 minutes from Acadia National Park. The Park is phenomenal, but can be crowded. Bar Harbor is a favored destination and with the many cruise ships in can be crowded in the high season. Cottages on Mount Desert Island cost 3 times our fees for a similar size rental. But why compare apples to oranges? See our site. http://www.lightheartretreat.com/. Your heart will call you here if Light Heart Retreat is for you.
This has been a wonderful week to relax and heal. You have created a beautiful retreat full of light and Happiness. Thanks so much for your thoughtfulness and attention to detail. Blessings.
Words cannot describe the feeling you have when you arrive here. My girlfriend and I were searching for the escape from our New York City lifestyles and definitely found it here. We arrived in the pitch of midnight (long day driving) and fell asleep to the sound of frogs and nothing else. Upon awaking we were greeted with the sunrise over the quarry and the beauty of this retreat.
It is a magical place. When Joanna gave us the orientation a bald eagle crossed our views. A delightful omen. Joanna is a wonderful person and somebody who you can easily get along with. Very accommodating, and respectful; to you, to her property, to mother nature.
Our first day, we had planned to go to Acadia, but were so enamored with the property, that we just hung out there! She has 100 acres to explore, canoe, swim and meditate. It is so wonderful.
Although it is on a dirt road, it is not totally removed from civilization. Ellsworth is only 20 minutes away and has your typical American chain stores. The Hannaford is very good (good meat and salad selections).
Bar Harbor is about 45 minutes to an hour, but everywhere you drive in that section of the planet is a treat.
This place inspired me so much and I hope one day to return. We stayed in the blackberry cottage which is ample for a couple. It is small, yes, but we never felt cramped. We also toured Huckleberry Hideaway which was absolutely breathtaking, full of light, and inspiration.
The place is magical. Off the beaten path, very reasonable, and probably better than most places you will find on mount desert island (If you are into nature, roughing it a little, and looking for more out of life).
Having done a great deal of research to find the perfect spot for a much-needed vacation, my husband and I found the Light Heart Retreat. We were looking for both active and passive hours in an allergy-free environment. We wanted to spending a lot of time outdoors biking in Acadia and swimming somewhere safe and clean (this is the summer of the shark attack, after all). The LHR website descriptions were so thorough and well-organized (not to mention creative and intriguing) that we knew we found our spot.
We had spent hours biking the Carriage Roads in the past and knew how much fun that is (that is, after all, the reason for our focus on the Hancock area for a rental), but we had never spent time swimming in a quarry pond. The time we spent reading on the granite slabs and exploring the quarry pond with its stone formations and schools of fish was so amazing and relaxing that it rivaled our miles biking in Acadia. Access to the ponds, sauna, meditation hut, library, paths, hot tub, stone circle made us wonder if we ever really wanted to leave the grounds (expect to stock up Huckleberry's well-equipped kitchen).
Huckleberry Hideway is a beautiful, clean, well-stocked, and immensely comfortable cabin. We felt as if we not only found a wonderful home away from home, but also a private, secluded, and peaceful estate to explore and enjoy. The land surrounding the houses and two quarries is so rugged, yet well-managed and maintained that we wished we had spent two weeks at the retreat instead of one.
Joanna and her late-husband have created a true retreat for the body and soul. We both forgot all about our everyday responsibilities and were able to completely relax and replenish ourselves with absolute peace and quiet. There are also a million tiny details that Joanna maintains that make the cabins, grounds, and amenities special. Also, we found a wonderful, personalized guidebook waiting for us to not only explain the cabin and the grounds, but also the local amenities such as great restaurants in the immediate vicinity and short cuts to Bar Harbour and other less-touristy destinations.
We have the fondest memories of our stay in Huckleberry Hidewaway and plan to return for the two-week vacation that we wished we had planned during our first stay. We have already been recommending the Light Heart Retreat to friends and family, knowing that they would benefit as much as we have from the positive energy generated by the whole experience.
We have stayed at Light Heart Retreat several times, and keep going back. Swimming and canoeing in the quarry, hiking through the woods, discovering abundant wildlife, secret stones and becoming one with nature. This place is truly magical. Our whole family yearns to return every year. Joanna and David are gracious hosts and always make us feel welcome. Close to Acadia, Schoodic Point and Bar Harbor. Lots to do, lots of quiet and reconnection .
The location is exactly as advertised, great pictures and descriptions. This property is among the cleanest and most well stocked of any place we have stayed. We had wonderful hosts, they seemed to sense our every need from a nice supply of baked goods, and a well stocked kitchen to prior preparation of kindling and logs for both our indoor and outdoor fires. I recommend this property in the highest manner and will be posting everywhere I can about it. The caretakers provide company and information when needed and allow you to remain as private as you desire while enjoying this amazing property in nature. This is the perfect place to reflect on your life, forget about your daily cares and enjoy the natural beauty this earth has to offer. Should you find yourself in need of other distractions, Acadia National park is within easy reach, both MDI & the Schoodic peninsula. Many great small harbor towns surround this beautiful property.
My boyfriend and I stayed at the Huckleberry Hideaway for a long weekend just before Christmas and it was exactly what we were hoping for and more! The house it cozy, homey and generously equipped with anything you may need. This cabin is nestled on a side of the property that has lots of land to snowshoe through and has a beautiful view, especially from the deck off the master bedroom upstairs. Joanna made us feel right at home when we arrived and David made sure we had plenty of wood for the wood burning stove. The spa was amazing plus it was snowing which made everything look beautiful at sunset.
Clean, cozy, inviting, beautiful, private, relaxing and quiet-we had absolutely no complaints! We loved our stay and hope to stay again soon!
Our stay at the Huckleberry Hideaway was nothing short of magical. The Huckleberry is ensconced in nature's beauty- surrounded by towering trees, and neighbored by the granite sculptures that evoke an introspective process and reflection during your stay. The fresh air demands to be gulped in deep breaths, which are often stolen by the incredible views of the valley below, or clearings in the snow-covered woods. The house itself is perfectly cozy, with all of the modern amenities one could ask for-- and impeccably clean. The hot tub under the stars is the coup de grace--if you can't find relaxation there, you're beyond hope. There are also plenty of well-marked trails to hike and quarries to traverse (on snowshoes). We had the pleasure of staying during a significant snow storm--didn't lose power, but were well prepared if that had occurred thanks to our hosts. Joanna and David are the quintessential gracious hosts--attentive without ever being intrusive. We will definitely be back.
The Huckleberry Hideaway is located at Light Heart Retreat a 30 minute drive to Acadia for site seeing, hiking, horse back riding, a whale watch, schooner ride, swimming at pristine Sand Beach, cross-country skiing in the winter. Many craft shows, fairs and local festivals through out summer and fall--wonderful local crafts people with great galleries. Rent kayaks or bikes. Visit nearby Schoodic Point. Sail on a schooner from Bar Harbor or go whale watching. Schoodic for the Arts Program: great, short workshops in storytelling, music, art...Eat lobster in the rough. Visit Theodore Roosevelt's Campobello. Attend the Rockport Blues Festival, first weekend after 4th of July. Bangor American Folk Festival, last weekend in August. Weekend contra dances. So much to do, see and eat!
Visit historic Eastport, the Botanical Gardens, Camden/Rockland, the Booth Bay area, all make for a great day trip.
There are several excellent galleries within 15 minutes of Light Heart Retreat. Though rural, we have several fine dining restaurants... Our favorite is the Crocker House Inn in Hancock for a special dinner. Everyone loves Chester Pike's Friday night fish fry...not just fried fish...and their breakfasts with homemade breads. Great lunches and deserts, too.
Head south of here and explore the Blue Hill Peninsula. The lovely town of Blue Hill has been nicknamed, Little Cambridge and is home to Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary fame. Visit Stonington and Deer Isle, getting there is part of the joy as the drive takes you along open fields, farms and forests along the water's edge.
This is one of the most visited areas in the country and for good reason. Maine--the way life ought to be.
