**This is not just a cottage rental. For the price of a fine cottage, you get that and so much more.

Arriving here, you will be most happy to have found your way to magical, mystical Light Heart Retreat, where heaven touches earth. Solitude and beauty--safe sanctuary in our changing times, is beckoning you to return to your Light Heart within.

Just a short drive to Acadia, but a world away from the hustle and bustle, Huckleberry Honeymoon Hideaway is nestled in old growth pine and spruce overlooking Taunton Bay and the Lucerne Hills to the west. From your second story deck you can look southward onto the Sacred Stone Circle, ala` Stonehenge. Looking east out the bedroom you see the sunrise over the largest water-filled quarry at the retreat. Everywhere you look, nature greets you with a warm and welcoming another soul in sight and if you do see one, that soul will most likely have been called here for the tranquility, the peace, refreshment and renewal.

The Huckleberry Hideaway was designed and built with much love and respect, with pine and granite from the retreat. Though initially planned as a one bedroom cottage for a couple or a single person on retreat, the choice to have two bedrooms has proven to be divinely inspired. Sometimes a loving couple needs to have their own space in which to dream their own dreams. And sometimes friends make good, respectful housemates to share a retreat with.

The two bedrooms are private to each other. The master bedroom is on the second floor with a private half bath, skylights and sliders out to the west facing deck. There's a bodywork table with linens supplied in this spacious room. The first floor bedroom is immediate to the full bathroom and has a skylight and entry onto a private granite patio. This bedroom is bumped out from the main house, so guests in each bedroom have their own quiet and privacy, as desired.

The Huck’s kitchen is well stocked with herbs. spices, oil, vinegar, foil, etc. You can cook, barbecue on the grill and even bake cookies if you want to. The dining nook table is pub style giving you great views to look out upon the changing light, birds and wildlife.

There’s a built in u-shaped window seat and comfy chairs facing the glass fronted wood stove. The radiant in-floor heat and the wood stove keep guests toasty year round. When damp, snow or cold winds keep you inside, you’ll be cozy and still connected to nature through the views provided by the ample windows.

Guests of the Huckleberry have a private outdoor hot tub on the south patio and access to a wood-fired sauna on the quarry. The stewards of the retreat maintain gardens, hiking trails and swimming areas on this 100 acre old growth forest and granite quarry ponds. There’s a library with holistic, spiritual and some mainstream reading and media.

Additional amenities include your own fire pit, a meditation hut that overlooks Bragdon Quarry, a serene place to meditate, canoe, sunbathe, bird watch and swim.

You don’t have to pack a large bag when you visit. Your Huckleberry Friend has a laundry room with washer and dryer. You can travel light when you come here and when you leave you’ll be feeling even lighter. The stewards love to see the transformation that guests experience here reflected in a more youthful, relaxed countenance. Is the muse of Light Heart Retreat calling you?

If the Huckleberry Hideaway is a stretch for your means, or is not available for the time of your inquiry, please be sure to see the one bedroom Blackberry Cottage, 112158. It’s much beloved and has its own unique gifts to share with you.

More info about locale:

On the quiet side of Frenchmen’s Bay, away from the crowds, we offer you nature’s sanctuary for the soul. Light Heart Retreat is located close enough for ease of visits to Acadia National Park, the beautiful seaports of Mt. Dessert Island, the well known Camden/Rockland area, and Blue Hill Peninsula.

Drive 2 miles from here, take a left onto Route 1 and you’re within 2 hours of Campobello Island, Lubec, Eastport and New Brunswick, Canada. Here you’ll find uncrowded trails, beaches and vistas and of course, lighthouses. You can drive 25 minutes and be on the tip of Schoodic Point looking out over a wild and wooley ocean, clear across to Europe. There are bike and hiking trails here, a picnic area and pier to fish from.

Schoodic Point is part of Acadia National Park, but out of the fray, not being contiguous with the main park. You’ll pass by the small downtown of Winter Harbor when you go to Schoodic Point. It’s home to the Schoodic Arts Festival which hosts events year round. There are contra dances, musical events and a wide variety of workshops.

Go inland a bit and you’ll find pristine Donnell Pond, Schoodic Mountain, Black Mountain and other assents, part of the Frenchman’s Bay Conservancy’s network of trails. You’ll also find yourself traveling along the tops of blueberry barrens which turn red in the late fall and depending on the light, can appear neon red or pink even!

Light Heart Retreat is 30 minutes from Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor and centrally located for day trips.

About Joanna Pinney Buell

Your host Joanna Pinney Buell has many years as a practitioner in the holistic health and spiritual healing fields. She is an ordained minister, an inspired cook, organic gardener, writer and Joanna designed the retreat houses, their own home, and the little library. Together with husband, David, she has deeply enjoyed seeing Light Heart Retreat work it’s magic on those who have chosen this special hideaway, off the beaten path and away from the crowds. David made his transition back to the Great Cosmos in March 2015. His gifts and contributions are everywhere…the tree swing, the beautiful trails, the stone circle, the granite benches and standing stones that David created and placed. It’s too bad you’ll have missed his piano playing and his poetry readings and his garden tours. However, you cannot help but feel David’s loving, kind presence guiding you to discover the gift of peace, beauty and soul’s purpose that await you here.

Why Joanna Pinney Buell chose Franklin

The Huckleberry Hideaway is one of 2 retreat houses offered at Light Heart Retreat. No words can properly capture the spirit of peace, tranquility and beauty that this space exudes from within and that which is part of the surroundings. This year-round house has been for adults only and is best suited to one or two couples as well as making a very wonderful retreat space for an individual. However, accommodations have been made to host a small family when we're a good match.

This is not our own home. This is a space designed and built with deep intention for those who are seeking beauty, peace, rest, renewal, peace and inspiration. Light Heart Retreat offers all of this and there is the added benefit of being just 30 minutes away from Acadia National Park with it's vistas of the Atlantic and great hiking. The Huckleberry has a fully equipped and well stocked kitchen for cooking at home or one can treat themselves to some fine dining locally.

The owner has prepared an excellent guide to the area for visitors and is available to make further recommendations.

Light Heart Retreat is the best kept secret, starting to be found out. Best to book early.

Owner screens guest for a good match.

What makes this cottage unique

I love the opportunity to retreat to the Huckleberry myself, (Joanna) especially in the winter and early spring. Though the outdoor hot tub is a delight anytime, I especially enjoy it on a snowy night or a spring morning when the birds are beginning to sing. The long view from the balcony of Taunton Bay and the Lucerne Hills is is particularly nourishing to the soul when arrayed in autumn's reds and golds. I like to begin and end a winter's day in the rocking chair in front of the wood stove. There is no place I'd rather be on retreat than at our very own Huckleberry HIdeaway at Light Heart Retreat.

Our guest book is filled with many thanks for the special touches and warm welcome our guests receive at Light Heart Retreat. Guests of the Huckleberry Hideaway enjoy a homemade loaf of bread upon their arrival and have a seasonal floral arrangement on their dining room table.

There really in no place like Light Heart Retreat. Where can you go on retreat, have the comfort of a well designed retreat house, privacy, quiet, solitude, beauty, beauty, beauty...a wood-fired sauna, library and not be sharing it with 30 or more other guests? It's just us and the guests of the two retreat cottages on 100 acres with a gated entry. We offer so much that is of REAL value here. The retreat is 30 minutes from Acadia National Park. The Park is phenomenal, but can be crowded. Bar Harbor is a favored destination and with the many cruise ships in can be crowded in the high season. Cottages on Mount Desert Island cost 3 times our fees for a similar size rental. But why compare apples to oranges?

Guestbook comments from the owner

This has been a wonderful week to relax and heal. You have created a beautiful retreat full of light and Happiness. Thanks so much for your thoughtfulness and attention to detail. Blessings.

The Huckleberry Hideaway is located at Light Heart Retreat a 30 minute drive to Acadia for site seeing, hiking, horse back riding, a whale watch, schooner ride, swimming at pristine Sand Beach, cross-country skiing in the winter. Many craft shows, fairs and local festivals through out summer and fall--wonderful local crafts people with great galleries. Rent kayaks or bikes. Visit nearby Schoodic Point. Sail on a schooner from Bar Harbor or go whale watching. Schoodic for the Arts Program: great, short workshops in storytelling, music, art...Eat lobster in the rough. Visit Theodore Roosevelt's Campobello. Attend the Rockport Blues Festival, first weekend after 4th of July. Bangor American Folk Festival, last weekend in August. Weekend contra dances. So much to do, see and eat!

Visit historic Eastport, the Botanical Gardens, Camden/Rockland, the Booth Bay area, all make for a great day trip.

There are several excellent galleries within 15 minutes of Light Heart Retreat. Though rural, we have several fine dining restaurants... Our favorite is the Crocker House Inn in Hancock for a special dinner. Everyone loves Chester Pike's Friday night fish fry...not just fried fish...and their breakfasts with homemade breads. Great lunches and deserts, too.

Head south of here and explore the Blue Hill Peninsula. The lovely town of Blue Hill has been nicknamed, Little Cambridge and is home to Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary fame. Visit Stonington and Deer Isle, getting there is part of the joy as the drive takes you along open fields, farms and forests along the water's edge.

This is one of the most visited areas in the country and for good reason. Maine--the way life ought to be.

Light Heart Retreat -Amazing Peaceful Space

  • 5 of 5

Love it! Great relaxing, peaceful place to just BE. Close enough to see all the Acadia sights but removed enough to really slow down and be restored. Joanna is a gem, every detail is taken care of.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for this thoughtful review. It's an honor and privilege to be able to share the beauty, peace and Nature of Light Heart Retreat with guests during these challenging times-- to provide respite and nourishment mind/body/spirit/heart and soul. Guests are prompted to visit this part of Maine to visit the famous Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. Yet there is something that underlies that prompt-- the soul's call for solitude and renewal. That higher calling is what Light Heart Retreat is all about.

It's a wonderful experience!

  • 5 of 5

Light Heart Retreat is such an enchanting and tranquil place that's created by Joanna and David. It was perfect for my last-minute getaway from the hustle/bustle of daily life. I had a couple of days off the grid, enjoying Acadia National Park and day trips to places recommended by Joanna that's off the beaten path. Joanna is a very resourceful and considerate host. She got the hot tub ready for us before we arrived, made the cottage spotless and homey. Their library cabin is filled with all sorts of fascinating books. The cottage is located on 100-acre of land with two quarry and forest. We got to see breathtaking sunset on the deck and stars from skylight. On top of that, Joanna's banana bread was so delicious! Love the place!

The 3 R's - Relaxing, Refreshing and Reconnecting

  • 5 of 5

To celebrate 25 years of marriage I was looking for somewhere special to get away with my spouse. With our 7 children now grown and on their own it was time for us! Huckleberry cottage at Light Heart Retreat was everything we needed. Tucked into the woods of Maine we truly felt at peace - so quiet and yet so alive with natures wonders. So much to see and take in - the granite rockhedge, swimming/floating in the rock quarry, hiking the many trails, watching the sunset from our balcony and then watching the stars as we relaxed in the hot tub. It truly was a relaxing time - a time well spent as we reconnected with each other.

Joanna is an excellent hostess - easy to contact and very pleasant to talk with. Our only regret is not getting to spend more time with her as we were fascinated with her telling us the living history of the area. As an added bonus - while one is very secluded you are still within minutes of the Bar Harbor area and many other sites. We highly recommend a stay here at Light Heart Retreat.

This is a true retreat. Rustic and remote yet so clean and comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 3 nights at Huckleberry hideaway in the off season (mid-march). It was everything we had hoped for and more - the perfect place to get away from it all. Joanna pays attention to every detail. Everything was spotlessly clean and tidy and she even had baked us a delicious banana bread and set up a fire ready to be lit in the wood stove. Particularly memorable were the sunset views from the balcony porch and star gazing in the private hot tub each night. The drive to Acadia is easy and worth it for the loveliness of the cabin. We regret that we were so busy exploring Acadia that we didn't have time to spend on the property grounds - an old granite quarry. Highly recommend this place to anyone who wants a quiet sanctuary away from the crowds and traffic of the island.

Owner's Response: Thanks Emily & Andrew for being such mindful guests. I'm honored that you chose the Huckleberry for your first nights away, from your little girls. I hope you'll have another opportunity outside of snow and mud season. Blessings for the mud to dry up, the sun to shine and green leaves appearing soon here and where you live, Joanna

We alsmot want to say bad things to try to keep a secret but the positive energy must be shared... Perfect mountain cottage that feels like a home. Has everything you need for a perfect get-away. Cozy fireplace with plenty of wood. Towels, full kitchen, soft sheets. Watch amazing sunsets from the balcony. Watch the sunrise on the trees while still in bed. Walking trails just outside the door and Acadia not too far away. Too many amazing features to describe! Joanna is the perfect host-- shows you what you need then let's you have your space. Magical

  • 5 of 5

Words cannot describe the feeling you have when you arrive here. My girlfriend and I were searching for the escape from our New York City lifestyles and definitely found it here. We arrived in the pitch of midnight (long day driving) and fell asleep to the sound of frogs and nothing else. Upon awaking we were greeted with the sunrise over the quarry and the beauty of this retreat.

It is a magical place. When Joanna gave us the orientation a bald eagle crossed our views. A delightful omen. Joanna is a wonderful person and somebody who you can easily get along with. Very accommodating, and respectful; to you, to her property, to mother nature.

Our first day, we had planned to go to Acadia, but were so enamored with the property, that we just hung out there! She has 100 acres to explore, canoe, swim and meditate. It is so wonderful.

Although it is on a dirt road, it is not totally removed from civilization. Ellsworth is only 20 minutes away and has your typical American chain stores. The Hannaford is very good (good meat and salad selections).

Bar Harbor is about 45 minutes to an hour, but everywhere you drive in that section of the planet is a treat.

This place inspired me so much and I hope one day to return. We stayed in the blackberry cottage which is ample for a couple. It is small, yes, but we never felt cramped. We also toured Huckleberry Hideaway which was absolutely breathtaking, full of light, and inspiration.

The place is magical. Off the beaten path, very reasonable, and probably better than most places you will find on mount desert island (If you are into nature, roughing it a little, and looking for more out of life).
