The Original Rainbow Dreams Cottage - with a spectacular oceanfront view, the only vacation rental so close to the ocean on the scenic Old Red Road (Rural Route 137). Our Cottage is situated on the beautiful Puna Coast of the Big Island. Set amidst a 150-year old 'kings' grove of coconut palms, the cottage directly faces the Pacific Ocean with stunning, 180 degree views framed thru palms and rare ocean mahogany trees. Situated amid a tropical garden planted with over 125 Palm Trees, exotic fruits and redolent with the fragrance of tropical flowers, this cottage is simply the best rental in the area.
Inside the private and well-appointed cottage, you will find vintage Koa, mahogany and bamboo furnishings. The cottage is set up with everything you need - a well-stocked kitchen, one full bath, an extra outside shower for washing off after the beach, and two bedrooms with closets. All rooms have windows to let the natural trade-winds in, and there is a small porch in front with a small screened lanai on the side to enjoy the balmy air.
Rainbow Dreams Cottage is the perfect eco-retreat, where you can really get away from it all. We are solar powered, so therefore there are limitations to this rental. Please read our reviews, since there is NO cell service, NO wi-fi, NO T.V. or even radio - just the beauty and the power of nature, the sound of the ocean and the ocean breezes. However, ALL of those services are just minutes away, up the road or in the nearby town of Pahoa.
With a direct view of the ocean, you may spend your whole vacation simply gazing at the waves, birds and sky, yet the cottage is the perfect base for exploring the unique natural and cultural heritage of the Big Island. All along the coast in the rural Puna District, you will discover special places to explore, from scenic parks to sheltered coves. Three miles from the cottage is exotic Kehena Beach, where palms and ironwood trees surround a lovely crescent of black sand. Two miles in the other direction is MacKenzie State Park, where steep lava cliffs form a rugged, rocky shore with dramatic crashing waves. Ahalanui State Park with a naturally-heated fresh/salt-water swimming pond is about five miles drive. This is a truly unique spot in one of the most beautiful areas of the Big Island in which to explore, enjoy and restore.
We spend as much time as we can at this magical property and always find it to be transformational and rejuvenating. I grew up in New England, went to college in Philadelphia, and currently reside in San Francisco. I work for a nonprofit organization that supports the National Parks near the Golden Gate and helped to organize the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge as well as the recent installation by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz.

We looked all over the State of Hawaii for our perfect place and found many areas that we loved, including Hanalei Bay on Kauai, and Hana, Maui, and this area reminded us of those areas, and we liked the nearness to Hilo, which is the second largest city in Hawaii after Honolulu. We especially liked the rugged quality of the Puna Coast and the primal feeling of the land in this area. Being "off the grid" and without cell service - turned out to be heaven. We have many repeat visitors, because people love coming back again and again to this very special and powerful place.
The Rainbow Dreams Cottage is extremely unique in its proximity to the ocean and its surroundings in an area that is entirely dominated by the beauty and serenity of the natural world. Also, the off-the-grid experience is becoming more and more unique as people need a place to unplug and get away from the daily bombardment of internet and email. For those that need to be connected, it's just a short drive from the cottage in either direction to access the web and cell service.
Just returned last week from our stay at the cottage with my Husband and teenage Son. This place is AWESOME, words and pictures cannot describe.
I admit being a bit apprehensive about being off the grid, but once you are there it just doesn't matter. Rolling out of bed and watching incredible sunrises over the ocean was the best. It is an easy drive to the National Park, Hilo an everything you would want to explore in the area. We were lucky enough to be there at a time when lava was flowing and could be seen from short drive to the end of the road. Like the other reviews, just wish we were there longer.
Thanks for the great stay!
Immaculately kept and well appointed. The exotic location was just what Hawaii is meant to be. Being off the grid was a first for us and surprisingly uncomplicated. Not having TV or Internet was a real relaxant. Thank you David. We'll be back for a longer stay.
This property was all we could have imagined and more. Gorgeous, peaceful, serene, beautiful bird songs, tree frogs in the evening. we had never explored the south Hilo area before - and what a find! We liked Paheo, the nearest town and discovering the Wednesday night shindig down at 'Uncle Robert's' - a must visit.
The cottage is so lovely and breezy....I am definitely recommending it to friends. Thanks Dave
After I booked this property I was second guessing my decision; I thought we might be too isolated. I couldn't have been more wrong. The main road in front of the house leads to the "end of the road" where the lava crossed and in that area there is a small store and restaurant and other local vendors. The traffic on the road was fairly constant but not bothersome. The views from the property are stunning and probably the best from any residence on the road.
The cottage was very clean and comfortable with lovely decor.
The town of Pahoa is not far away with some excellent restaurants. The drive from the house to the top of the volcano national park took one hour, much closer than if we had stayed on the Kona side of the island. That is the reason we chose this location and we couldn't have been happier. The rain forest surrounds you and the ocean is at the front door.
There aren't any beaches for swimming but it doesn't seem that the big island offers much for beaches anywhere.
We had fresh bananas and star fruit from the property after the owner was kind enough to show us around and point out what was available.
I should also mention the sounds of the ocean and the frogs at night was really peaceful , and a star filled sky topped off the evenings.
I would definitely recommend this property if you want to relax and get away to peaceful and calm surroundings.
To say we had a totally relaxing and memorable stay at Rainbow Cottage is a complete understatement. This place shines in a way that in indescribable. It's off-the-grid perfection. Our 10-day stay in late January 2016 was far to short; next time, and there will be a next time, we'll plan for weeks or maybe a month. To spend every morning watching the sunrise over the Pacific and every evening relaxing with a tropical cocktail listening to the ocean waves crashing on the rocky lava shoreline was idyllic. It's the way life should be: easy and peaceful. There was plenty for us to do - black sand beaches, warm ocean-side tide pools, an occasional trek to other parts of the "Big Island." We ate fresh fruit and produce from nearby farmer's markets every day. Our trip was heaven for us; simple and easy and away from it all. Mahalo Hawai'i! Kenny & David
My husband and I and another couple stayed at the Rainbow Dreams Cottage for 4 days. We thoroughly enjoyed getting away from it all and also enjoyed the beautiful area. We did visit many of the locations mentioned by the owners. We loved being able to get our own fruit off the abundant fruit trees in the area. We appreciated being off the grid as we also use solar power back home. A couple of more lights and an outdoor grill for cooking would have been helpful, however to our overall experience. This was a great location to explore the southern part of the island and also the Hilo area.
