Ryan or Barbara purchased this house in 2004
While on a weekend ski trip over President’s Day 2004, we fell in love with Massanutten Resort and purchased our first second home, The Retreat at Massanutten. We have now vacationed at Massanutten for more than ten years and used the resort for many years to get away from the hustle and bustle of Northern Virginia and Washington, DC, for winter skiing and summer outdoor fun. We now live in Idaho but return often to The Retreat and Massanutten as one of our favorite vacation destinations. No other resort near Washington, DC offers as wide a variety of activities as Massanutten, and at such a great value for the family to get away together. Since 2004, we have added three additional Massanutten homes to our inventory and rented to more than 700 families. We hope you will enjoy The Retreat at Massanutten as much as our family and our guests have.
During the summer, we purchase the 'pool pass' that allows our guests to use the private outdoor pool. This is much more private and avoids the hustle and bustle of the crowded indoor pools.
We had a wonderful stay at your Masanutten/Shennandoah property. All of us enjoyed the couple nights. We will come back again.
We really enjoyed staying at the Retreat for a weekend in October. 12 adults had plenty of room to spread out. Guys loved the game room. Nicely stocked kitchen and very clean overall. Owner was very helpful in suggesting local restaurants/sites as well and very responsive in answering any questions. A little wear and tear around the edges, but overall great place and would stay here again.
We stayed at this home for a celebration of my daughter’s 40th birthday so including myself and my husband, children and grandchildren we had a total of 18 people. A full house!
The bedroom with the King size bed had the most privacy with its own adjoining bathroom so we gave that to my daughter and her husband. The kitchen/great room was great for family gathering and the kids enjoyed the foosball as well as having a separate level. Actually, I think my adult sons enjoyed the foosball the most!
The house does show signs of use such as closet doors not quite closing and kitchen cabinet doors misaligned but these are minor and really don’t impact your stay. We found the home to be clean and the beds comfortable enough and plenty of pillows and blankets. There were plenty of DVD players throughout the bedrooms but there wasn’t one for the large TV in the great room. Not sure if that was a temporary situation or not but just as a heads up for the next tenant.
The kitchen was fairly well stocked. I had brought my hand mixer to use and found I didn’t have to unpack it as there was one in the cupboard. There were plenty of plates/glasses and mugs and utensils. I would agree with one of the other reviews that more dishtowels would be a nice addition.
We used the outside grill and that worked fine. We tried to use the upstairs fireplace but were unsuccessful. We didn’t call about that as it wasn’t important enough late at night but you might want to check it out first if you’re planning on using it.
Things we did run out of and that I would bring next time: extra toilet paper, paper towels and trash bags. I would also bring some baggies/foil/plastic wrap.
My deposit was returned quickly. Overall I would say the house does show signs of use but, with 7 bedrooms and a wonderful great room, has plenty of space, is in reasonably good condition, and has a kitchen with enough cooking and eating utensils for a large group. We also appreciated the house notebook with instructions and local information. All phone calls and emails were answered promptly by the owner or the manager.
Spread out rooms for everyone. Private for the one who likes her space. The house needs some maintenance. Kitchen lacking important items (dish towels, kitchen mitts, enough dishwasher soap, spices) seem small, but were big when they were needed. Should provide more toilet paper (for the price being paid). Some chairs broken.
Great location to gather the family for Christmas.
The cleanliness and maintenance of the house was bad: one kitchen stove didn't work, one cabinet was broken, the video game did not work and the grill was dirty and was not working, dead roaches in the lighting fixtures. The maintenance number was useless.
I along with 17 other young women stayed at this rental for a retreat. This rental was so perfect for the occasion. There is SO much space & it's easy to be very comfortable in there. One of the great things at the rental was the HUGE TV in the living room. It was perfect for watching group films. There was just enough sitting space for everyone. In addition, the kitchen is fully stocked. Coming in, we weren't sure what the kitchen would have so we had brought our own pots/pans/spoons/griddles... We actually did not even need to bring all of that. The kitchen had all the appliances needed. Departure was easy- just follow the contract and do a few things like start a load of laundry and take the garbage out. The on site manager was great. We needed something fixed and he came right over, minded his business, & fixed what we needed. I would definitely recommend this property to future vacationers.
We stayed in the home this past weekend and had a wonderful time. We love October in the Shenandoah Valley and this weekend was particularly good weather and a great time to be in the mountains. The home itself is plenty large and had more than enough room for our entire family. The home is also well stocked with lots of little things, like spices in the kitchen and the like. That was nice to be able to rely on some of the items that were already in the home, even though we did bring plenty of our own items for cooking. And the owner stopped by to check on our rental. He was great to work with. We had no problems and a great weekend. Can't ask for more.
