Casa Fantone is a typical stunning detached farmhouse, 300 years old, remodelled and updated with a wide private garden and park of 5 hectares and a private pool of 6 x 12 meters using salt instead of chlorine. The villa lies in a quiet hill near Poppi village, 30 km to Arezzo and 50 km to Florence, and it has a good level of furniture. The villa has modern kitchen and bathroom facilities, but it still gives one the feeling of stepping back in history. The villa, made by stones, is exposed to the sun and it has a fantastic view on the Casentino valley. Absolute privacy and a maximum of security are guaranteed, also because the property is fenced and the access is possible only through an automatic gate. A typical Tuscan terrace close to the kitchen can be an opportunity to have your breakfast or to drink a glass of Chianti with your friends looking down at the beautiful valley. In the terrace you will also discover an ancient baking oven which could hold at least 20 pizzas at a time. If only those walls could talk!

TUSCANY is famous in the world because its beautiful landscape, its cities art, its wine, its food, its history.

FLORENCE, one of the the most beautiful city in the world, shows in every corner priceless treasures. An open-air museum with an incredible artistic and historical heritage.

Florence is a city of art by definition. During the period of the Renaissance passed the great names of painting, sculpture and architecture. In Florence also born artists such as Giotto, Cimabue, Brunelleschi, Donatello, Botticelli, Masaccio, Verrocchio, Ghirlandaio, della Robbia and ending with LEONARDO da Vinci and MICHELANGELO.

They lived in Florence with the greatest exponents of the poetry of the time, big names of literature such as Dante, Boccaccio, Gucciardini and Machiavelli. This predominance of art and poetry also meant the primacy of Tuscany between Florence and Italian dialects.

Works of art created by artists more grandiose: the Galleria degli Uffizi, the Accademia Gallery, Palazzo Pitti, the Bargello National Museum and the Museums of San Marco are just a part of these treasures of art.

Piazza della Signoria, one of the most elegant squares where there are the most impressive monuments, and Piazzale Michelangelo, which offers a breathtaking view over the city, are some charming places.

Keepers of the jewels of the past, such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Basilica of Santa Croce, the church of Santa Maria Novella and the fascinating Medici Villas.

AREZZO, was founded by an Etruscan settlement in the fourth century. B.C. The city retains a medieval structure characteristic of great artistic and historical value, a constant attraction for the beautiful works of art it contains. And 'it ideal not only for those who love art and culture, but also for those who love walking down old buildings. Furthermore, in the city takes place the famous medieval 'Giostra del Saracino'.

Piazza Grande also known as Piazza Vasari, is among the most scenic and picturesque squares in Italy, site of the Giostra del Saracino and well-known antiques fair. This fair is held the first weekend of every month.

Remember the cathedral (completed early '500) and S. Domenico church where inside, the center of the apse, you can see the huge painted crucifix, an early masterpiece by Cimabue (1260-65).

In Arezzo was shot part of the film 'La vita è bella' by Roberto Benigni.

SIENA, is one of the best preserved historical cities of Tuscany. Ancient medieval city built on three hills, is still surrounded by walls. The whole city of Siena, built around the Piazza del Campo, was conceived as a work of art that blends into the landscape of the Crete Senesi. To remember the Palio, traditional medieval horse race, is run around the Piazza del Campo each year. July 2 and August 16 are the dates when the Palio di Siena is held.

The historic center of Siena since 1995 among the world heritage sites by UNESCO.

Tuscany offers also some historical, well-mantained and very interesting villages as Cortona, S.Gemignano, Volterra and Monteriggioni.

Land between Siena and Firenze is famous for the production of Chianti wine ( 'Chiantishire' ).

Tuscany is also the land of the wines: Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Brunello di Montalcino and Nobile di Monte Pulciano.

POPPI, is at the center of the Casentino valley, a valley among the most beautiful in Tuscany.

It's a medieval walled city and at the top dominates the Castle of the Counts Guidi ( Conti Guidi ), the work of the famous family of architects Di Cambio, 'prototype' of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.

Built in the thirteenth century, it is characterized by a façade of mullioned windows, the center of which comes off a high tower, and surrounded by a wall with battlements Guelfi and a wide moat. Thanks to constant restorations over the centuries, the castle of Poppi is currently in excellent condition.

Inside, the Library Rilliana, full of hundreds of medieval manuscripts and incunabula.

Another key element of importance is the chapel of the Counts with a fourteenth-century frescoes attributed to Taddeo Gaddi, a pupil of Giotto.

An important event in Poppi, at the end of August: 'the Gusto of Guidi':

The taste and selling exhibition of Tuscany wines and traditional and organic products of Casentino valley.

With the opportunity to enter in the old cellars of Poppi, no longer used, but still with the old tools for the production of wine.

The Golf course Casentino offers a relaxing view of the village of Poppi and Casentino Valley. Five minutes of driving are enough to get the golf course from my property.

The Park stands out as one of the most prized forest areas in Europe. At the heart of the park are the Foreste Demaniali Casentinesi [State Casentino forests], within which can be found the Riserva Naturale Integrale (Integral Nature Reserve) of Sasso Fratino, founded in 1959. The territory also has towns and villages rich in history and artistic and architectural heritage, which present themselves to the visitor in a wonderful natural frame, rich in flora and fauna, including the most important population of the Apennine wolf, as well as the exceptional presence of five species of ungulates (mammals with hooves): wild boar, roe deer, fallow deer, common deer, and mouflon (mountain sheep).

Inside the park there are two points of great interest and spiritual importance: the Sanctuary of La Verna and the Hermitage of Camaldoli. At La Verna St. Francis of Assisi had the stigmata.

The protected area can be visited by pleasant excursions on foot, mountain bike, horseback along a path network of approximately 600 kilometres.

Poppi has also a zoo, with local fauna, but not only.

S.Martino and Quota are the nearest villages to the property, 1,5 miles far from the villa. They have a grocery and a bar. Quota has also a family restaurant. Ponte a Poppi, far 3 miles, has supermarkets, restaurants and any other kind of shop. In Bibbiena, 5 miles away, there is a wide and new commercial centre: 'COOP of Casentino'. There is also the Casentino valley hospital. Every day of the week there is an outdoor market in some of Casentino's villages. Tuesday is the Ponte a Poppi day for its open market. The fourth Saturday of each month, in Bibbiena, it’s possible to buy agricultural products directly from the producer. Every first week end of the month in Arezzo there is an important fair of antiques.

At the villa it is possible to buy organic olive oil from Casa Fantone olives. You can also buy Chianti wine.

You find a bottle of these products in the welcome basket.

Two outlet are available: Foiano della Chiana outlet, Montevarchi outlet.

Hospitality and Privacy.

The property is rented to only one party and only the people of this party live into the villa. My family, who became the Casa Fantone owner almost a century ago, lives in a little village 1.5 miles far from the farmhouse. We are satisfied of our work only if our guests have no problems. Friendliness, a welcome basket with some local products as a bottle of Casa Fantone organic olive oil, any information and help are offered. We will care for everything that is necessary to allow Casa Fantone’s guests a good holiday.

Houseguests can taste natural fruit and vegetables from the garden, when they are available. They can also buy olive oil and Chianti wine.

For stays of 2 weeks or more a welcome breakfast, based on the Mediterranean diet, is offered at the owner's house.

The villa offers a great privacy. Twelve acres of private garden ( cypress, olive trees, apple trees, grape trees, flowers, meadows, vegetable garden...) around the villa are fenced. You enter through an automatic gate enjoying freedom, silence and a beautiful place.

About Gianfranco Dei

My name is Gianfranco Dei. I was born in Tuscany, Poppi village in the 1942.

I attended technical studies then I lived and worked in Genoa for about 35 years in the Italian steel company: Information technology field.

After my retirement I came back to my village. My mission has been to carry my property at the level of the 1960s.

Gianfranco Dei purchased this villa in 1945

Why Gianfranco Dei chose Poppi

An uncle of mine, bought Casa Fantone and other properties immediately after the Second World War. He entrusted the management of the land to my father, who was the only one of the family to have remained in his home village. Of the other nine brothers and sisters, all left the Casentino valley before and during the war, to find a better life in Genoa, Rome and France. When my uncle died, all the local family possessions, about 70 hectares of land and four houses, were inherited by my father. Despite all these assets, farmland management became increasingly difficult as people kept leaving the countryside, and the business turned less profitable.

My parents lived in San Martino village where they had a small farm. They had three sons, of whom I am the youngest. While the eldest brother carried on managing the family property all his life, my older brother and I left our village as young men to work in Genoa in the 1960s.

In 1978, my father decided to divide the property in three parts, one for each of his sons. I chose Casa Fantone farm.

My father never had enough money to maintain in perfect conditions all the properties he had to manage, in any case he brought water and electricity, built a little outside wc (which was later demolished), substituted the flat natural stones which made up the house floor with cement tiles.

However, when I became the owner, the house was in a general state of disrepair and it was evident that several problems had to be fixed. When my father died in 1979, the property stopped to be worked. At the time I was living and working in Genoa and it was impossible for me to take care of the house

Following my retiring from work in 1998, I decided to move back to my village and began anew the activity of restoring the house and managing the property. In 2000 I started renting the property trough an online advertising company. Year by year part of my earnings have been re-invested on the house.

Relaxing family holiday in Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a wonderful holiday week in Casa Fantone under Tuscan sun. The view, house, atmosphere was just like in movies and pictures. The house is old, beautiful with special atmosphere, in addition it has all needed modern facilities.

The arrival day was a bit cold rainy, so it was nice to warm up at the fire place which was lighted for us. Gradually the days got warmer and sun finally found us.

It was possible to just relax or do some activities. We had Olympic games with table tennis, table football, basketball etc. Our mid generation went for jogging and made bike tours. Our 1,5 year granddaughter enjoyed the small play park with swing and slide. Big swimming pool is great, I liked to had morning swim in a refreshing water, listening birds singing, enjoying wonderful view.

Our host was very kind and helpful, we got good hints for food and places. The most used was the small restaurant, 3 km drive up in Quata, from where we fetched delicious pizzas and pastas.

The May week was really enjoyable in Casa Fantone, it will remain long in our memories.

Just perfect

  • 5 of 5

Casa Fantone offered our family exactly the authentic Tuscan experience we were seeking. It was the perfect location for our three generation family gathering that included eight adults and four school-age children.

Surrounded by organic orchards and gardens, the house is wonderfully located on top of a hill with an outlook to the gorgeous Casentino Valley below.

Gianfranco Dei is a most gracious host, welcoming guests and offering invaluable information about local resources. He has done an impressive job renovating the house to enhance its 200 year old heritage with large comfortable bedrooms and modern bathrooms. We were able to seat everyone around the kitchen family table or dine outdoors to enjoy the evening sunsets.

The location offers the opportunity to take interesting day trips and come home to a refreshing swim in the beautiful hillside pool.

Our two week stay offered us the opportunity to thoroughly relax as well as enjoy POPPI’s delightful purveyors when we shopped at the local bakery, butcher, wine and vegetable markets. And, of course, gelato!

We wholeheartedly recommend Casa Fantone, and thank Gianfranco for our fantastic visit.

Charming villa with a beautiful view

  • 5 of 5

We spent an amazing week at Casa Fantone with a group of 8 adults and 5 small children. This house was perfect for our needs. Located on a hill, with a magnificent view over Casentino valley, it offers a peaceful place for getting away from it all, but at the same time has lots of nice restaurants and cafes within a 15 minute drive. I recommend visiting the nearest village Quota (about 3km away), where you find a tiny shop with local produce, and a Pizzeria with great stone oven pizzas.

Casa Fantone is also well situated for discovering other sites at the region. We made one day trip that combined Rimini and San Marino. Some members of our group also visited Florence.

The house was well maintained and clean. It was really warm for September, so we used the pool almost every day. Other facilities at the house were also nice, table football, and table tennis, a play area for the kids.

Gianfranco was such a great host and made us feel very welcome. He provided fresh fruit from the garden, home made olive oil and honey, a cake for the kids etc. He was also a great source of information about the region.

I have recommended this house to friends, and will surely return there someday

an excellent Villa and location

  • 5 of 5

A huge thank you to GianFranco and family for a most excellent time in the beautiful Casa Fantone. 10 of our family went - both sets of grandparents, my husband and I and our 4 children ( 16,14,8,6yrs old). After a rather long journey from Bologna because of poor weather, fog and snow and after arriving late we met the extremely friendly and helpful Gianfranco at the doorsteps of the property welcoming us all in to a warm fire and provisions ( home made honey/ olive oil and a marvellous cake ). The property is fantastic - I shall never forget that beautiful view across the tuscan hillsides and beyond . The younger two children had great fun all week trying to catch lizards we all played volley ball / basket ball/ football and went for a rather cold but welcome dip in the pool. We visited Florence/ Poppi and a lovely mountain top village called Quorta which had the most excellent and reasonable pizzeria - awesome oven baked pizzas! The property is steeped in history and we loved all the information around the property telling us how it functioned as a community farm . We all had a fabulous time and are keen to return someday !

Slowing down your life and enjoy

  • 5 of 5

This year we were the 4th time in Casa Fantone. We are 6 or 8 adults (38-48) and one or two children (4-8). After many years in Villas near the Tuscan classics like Siena or San Gimignano we have found our Tuscan home. Location:

Casa Fantone is situated on a hill with an incredible view of the valley of the Casentino. Urban people have to rediscover the silent of the night. On the spacious property you can also avoided each other if you need some time for your own.

Kids could endlessly discover the nature and the plants over the huge ground. In addition there is also a swing, slide, table tennis, table football and a basketball hoop. And of course the sensational pool.

If you need a rest from the "Dolce Vita", your table football or swimming skills or relaxing in a hammock you will find endless hike courses close to Casa Fantone.

Casentino is not on the main tourist-Route so sightseeing makes still fun. You can also consider one day trip to Florence ... but honestly we do not want to change this peaceful place for a day of hustle and bustle.

If available Gianfranco invites you to use the fruits, herbs and vegetable of the garden. Imagine that you a relaxing at the pool and your child pick up lovely ripe figs...

And speaking of Gianfranco: His hospitality and friendliness ist absolutely natural and easygoing. As a warm and friendly welcome a bottle of wine, self-made olive oil and self-made honey is already prepared. He also invites you for a breakfast in his own home a few kilometers up to the valley. For the rest of the time he act very discreetly.

Disadvantage: let me think.... Perhaps the chairs on the kitchen terrace should be replaced, these are a little uncomfortable. Generally the furniture are not the recent, but everything is well maintained and clean.

Thank you Gianfranco, for the wonderful weeks we could spent in Casa Fantone.
