About Gianfranco Dei
My name is Gianfranco Dei. I was born in Tuscany, Poppi village in the 1942. I attended technical studies then I lived and worked in Genoa for about 35 years in the Italian steel company: Information technology field. After my retirement I came back to my village. My mission has been to carry my property at the level of the 1960s.
Gianfranco Dei purchased this Villa in 1945
Why Gianfranco Dei chose Poppi
An uncle of mine, bought Casa Fantone and other properties immediately after the Second World War. He entrusted the management of the land to my father, who was the only one of the family to have remained in his home village. Of the other nine brothers and sisters, all left the Casentino valley before and during the war, to find a better life in Genoa, Rome and France. When my uncle died, all the local family possessions, about 70 hectares of land and four houses, were inherited by my father. Despite all these assets, farmland management became increasingly difficult as people kept leaving the countryside, and the business turned less profitable. My parents lived in San Martino village where they had a small farm. They had three sons, of whom I am the youngest. While the eldest brother carried on managing the family property all his life, my older brother and I left our village as young men to work in Genoa in the 1960s. In 1978, my father decided to divide the property in three parts, one for each of his sons. I chose Casa Fantone farm. My father never had enough money to maintain in perfect conditions all the properties he had to manage, in any case he brought water and electricity, built a little outside wc (which was later demolished), substituted the flat natural stones which made up the house floor with cement tiles. However, when I became the owner, the house was in a general state of disrepair and it was evident that several problems had to be fixed. When my father died in 1979, the property stopped to be worked. At the time I was living and working in Genoa and it was impossible for me to take care of the house Following my retiring from work in 1998, I decided to move back to my village and began anew the activity of restoring the house and managing the property. In 2000 I started renting the property trough an online advertising company. Year by year part of my earnings have been re-invested on the house.
What makes this Villa unique
Hospitality and Privacy. The property is rented to only one party and only the people of this party live into the villa. My family lives in a little village 1.5 miles far from the farmhouse. We are satisfied of our work only if our guests have no problems. Friendliness, a welcome basket with some local products as a bottle of Casa Fantone organic olive oil, any information and help are offered. We will care for everything that is necessary to allow Casa Fantone’s guests a good holiday. Houseguests can taste natural fruit and vegetables from the garden, when they are available. They can also buy olive oil and Chianti wine. For stays of 2 weeks or more a welcome breakfast, based on the Mediterranean diet, is offered at the owner's house. The villa offers a great privacy. Twelve acres of private garden ( cypress, olive trees, apple trees, grape trees, flowers, meadows, vegetable garden...) around the villa are fenced. You enter through an automatic gate enjoying freedom, silence and a beautiful place.

Best Vacation Spot Ever
We had the most wonderful time here for 2 weeks with our family. We were a party of 7, 2 of which were children. The property has so much to offer for everyone, most of the time we wanted to cook, relax and just be there. Gianfranco and his wife are the most gracious hosts, sharing their bountiful produce from the estate. The views are outstanding and you can’t understand how spectacular they are until you see it in person. We visited many other places while there, and it was a great starting point. We were so sad to leave but plan to come back again. Thank you so much to Gianfranco, we loved living la dolce vita and we couldn’t have enjoyed it so much without your hard work.
60th Birthday Bash
We have been home for a week now, our stay at Casa Fantone seems like a wonderful dream. Eight adults and 4 children had a wonderful holiday, the pool with its view over the Tuscan hills was wonderful. Gianfranco was very helpful and dealt with any concerns quickly. The children loved picking vegetables from his vegetable plot. We would highly recomend this villa. Beautiful area.
We had the best time!
This was our third two week stay at Casa Fantone in the past ten years. It is a magical place, a gorgeous setting and a charming house with gorgeous views and surroundings. Each time we staid there Gianfranco has been an extraordinary and overly forthcoming host. We will certainly come again!
Casa Fantone Fantastic
We spent a week with our children and 4 grandchildren aged 7 to 9. Everything at Casa Fantone was as promised and more. Gianfranco is the perfect host. He shared his wine, his olive oil, and the herbs and vegetables in his garden. He was always available to give us any help we needed. The kids shared a large room with 4 beds, and the 3 adult couples had 3 nice rooms of their own. The house had amenities galore. The pool is large and has a breathtaking view. We made pizza in the pizza oven ( Gianfranco helped us learn how to use it) on the terrace overlooking the mountains and ate it right there on the terrace -- which seated us all. We grilled dinner on the big patio with a table under an awning that also seated us all. When the kids were not in the pool they were on the swings, the hammocks, the soccer field. They played ping pong and foosball. We made day trips to Sienna, Florence, Poppi, Arezzo. Gianfranco helped us find a place where locals take their children to enjoy nature and swimming holes. There is even a gnome park to see in the vicinity. This house is absolutely perfect for families with children as well as a group of adults who want a special Tuscan experience.
Amazing Family Vacation Spot
We were a family of 10 adults and a 4 year old. The property and owner were as advertised. Gianfranco was very helpful and yet unobtrusive. He met us at the property, provided breakfast at his home on our first morning and the night we arrived called ahead to a local family owned restaurant to ensure accommodation for our whole family. He also provided fresh herbs and greens from the organic garden on site and a welcome basket with wine and his homemade olive oil. It was a perfect vacation spot. We took day excursions to Venice, Lucca, Siena, Rome, Florence and Pisa. Venice is a 3 1/2 hour drive each way, but most of the rest are within 1 1/2 to 2 hours. We spent every other day on an excursion and the rest of the time at Casa Fantone. It was a perfect balance and we did not want to come home. We had 11 people together for 16 days and never had any issues. Lots of space for everyone and blessed to have the pool, soccer field, playground, ping pong, and foosball. You cannot go wrong with Casa Fantone and Gianfranco, both are amazing!
We spent a week at this property in April. We were five adults, two teenagers, one toddler, and two babies. Our stay was fantastic. Except for the weather, which we had thought would be a bit warmer, everything was more or less what we had hoped for.
Our host, Gianfranco, was great. He was flexible, accommodating, friendly, and helpful. He looked after us and one could really tell that he loved this property and the surrounding area. He left us a welcome basket with some olive oil, wine, and fruit for us to enjoy. He also delivered a cake that his wife had made for us. It was all quite nice.
The property is fairly secluded, quiet, peaceful, and pretty. The views are great and there's plenty of room to play, relax, read, chat, or whatever. As many as we were, we never felt cramped or crowded.
I believe we would all love to go back if and when we're afforded the opportunity.
Thanks, Gianfranco...! :-)
