Amazing views, peaceful gorgeous surroundings and completely non-touristy feel, but convenient location half an hour or less to most of the places you will want to go. Right on the water, with a little beach in front, and a miles long beach a few hundred yards away. Beautiful furnishings, lovely remodeled kitchen and bath with rain and regular shower. We try to stock everything you may want (including washer and dryer and espresso maker) and it is an excellent value.
GREAT Value: We are charging ONLY $129/night plus tax from May to mid December! No cleaning fees or other charges for stays a week or more. Only $159/night plus tax for April. Only $259/night plus tax mid December through March. Always a very good value for such a nice place.
This is a lovely condo in Maalaea Banyans, on the third floor (great privacy and there is an elevator) of an attractive 4 story, nicely landscaped all oceanfront complex. It is in the quiet, peaceful village of Ma’alaea, ideally located only about 20 minutes from the airport, Lahaina, Kihei-Wailea, Kahalui, Wailuku, Iao Valley, North Shore windsurfing, etc.
From the living room and lanai, you have spectacular views of Molokini, Kaho’olawe, the coast stretching down past Kihei, and the base of Haleakala. Your view is framed by lush grounds and palm trees. The ocean is less than 100 feet away, with gently lapping waves. Usually. A few times a year there are strong south swells, and surfers come from all over to challenge the legendary 'Ma’alaea pipeline', also called the “freight train”, one of the fastest ride-able waves in the world. Huge waves, great surfing, and lots of broken surfboards right in front of you.
Another once in a lifetime experience: for some reason, Humpback whales tend both to mate and to deliver their babies right off Ma’alaea. Chances of seeing mating or births are best in January or February, but there is excellent whale watching from our lanai (or numerous boat trips from the harbor a few minutes away) from late December until mid April. Unlike California whale watching (where the whales are commuting between Alaska and Mexico) in Maui the whales seem to be on vacation too. They flap their fins, rhythmically thwop their tails, leap entirely out of the water, sing, make and have babies, and generally have a great time. April to December, you can still see outrigger canoes, Rays, Turtles, and the occasional Monk Seal and Dolphin from the lanai.
A 5 minute walk from the condo takes you to Ma’alaea harbor, restaurants, a small shopping center, a well-regarded aquarium (the Maui Ocean Center), mini-golf, etc. They are convenient, but entirely out of sight and mind when you do not need them.
A 5 minute walk toward Kihei takes you to tiny Haycraft Park and a 5 mile long, largely deserted beach, backed by protected wetlands. Good swimming and hiking, sea turtles, and good to great snorkeling. (More great snorkeling is only a short drive away.)
There are a tremendous number of good eating options. The BBQ, grounds, hot tub, pool, and lanai may tempt you cook at home or bring back take-out. There are quite a variety of good restaurants in walking distance. And it is easy to go to Lahaina, Kihei, Wailuku, Kahalui, (or almost anywhere) just for dinner. When we used to stay in Kihei-Wailea we either went to Lahaina /Kaanapali for the whole day, or didn’t go at all. Now it is a short beautiful drive, so just going for dinner seems easy and fun.
Our condo has new travertine tile floors throughout, good mattresses, new top quality furniture, towels and linens, all the amenities we could think of, washer and dryer in the unit, coffee maker and espresso maker, microwave, dishwasher etc. Everything is freshly painted.
We think you will have a wonderful time. Many people return again and again, and we hope you will, too. (and we give a 10% discount for re-rentals)
We love Maui, and bought this condo over 20 years ago to live in when we eventually retire. We're still working, but go as often as possible, now with our toddler grandchildren.
Our condo is ideal for a couple. If necessary, 2 more people can also sleep on the sofa bed in the living room.
But when we go with our grown kids and grandkids, we also rent a second unit. That and separate cars gives everyone their own space and privacy and is wonderful for a combination of family togetherness, and relaxed private vacation time.
Everyone can have time with the kids, and time without them for romantic dinners, snorkeling, hikes in the jungle, etc.
We've found using 2 condos for family vacations much less expensive than renting a house, more private than a larger condo, and we think, infinitely superior to hotel rooms.
In fact, we are going again soon with the kids and grandkids. Should be great!
Friends of ours in Maui (the owners of the place we used to rent in Kihei) lived in Maalaea Banyans and recommended we buy one when they sold the place we used to stay.
The more we are in Maalaea, the better we like it. The central location is outstanding, the views gorgeous, and it has a quiet, off the tourist path feel. In the early morning we often walk along the nearby beach (but it's so long, we've never made it to the far end in one shot.).
In the other direction, a 5 minute walk takes you to Maalaea village for boats, marina, restaurants for breakfast, lunch, or dinner; bar, live entertainment, groceries, deli, great lattes, mini golf, aquarium, activities, or shopping. (Writing this, I can hardly wait to go back!)
People come back again and again. They've found there is no need to spend a lot of money to have a relaxing, romantic, exciting, fantastic vacation getaway with wonderful lodging in a beautiful tropical location.
Aloha! Have a great time!
I must admit, I am torn between wishing to leave a deservedly stellar review and keeping knowledge of this gem of a condo all to myself! It truly is perfect for two people. The property has the most amazing, unobstructed sea view; it was a joy to have coffee/tea (note: there is a coffee maker, stove-top kettle available) and breakfast every morning on the lanai (FYI, the sea turtles seem most active around this time). The washing machine is HE model and, while the dryer looks to precede it about a decade or two, both work very well. The granite counter tops in the kitchen, not to mention the sea views, are lovely. The location is fab; 15 minute drive from airport, 5+ minute walk from Maalaea harbor (and several shops, restaurants etc) and less to Sugar Beach. I can definitively state that, after walking around the surrounding area quite a lot, the grounds of this complex are immaculate and, by far, the nicest in Maalaea. Apart from the unfortunate arrival of a group of extremely discourteous guests a couple of nights prior to our departure, it was shockingly quiet and peaceful. It should be noted, due to this fact, as well as that the majority of the residents did appear to be retired, if one is looking for a bustling, high energy place to stay, this is not it. In fact, I would say the entire area, and most of the island, does not cater to "party" crowd. This suited us extremely well (we were up by 6-7am and in bed by 10pm nearly every day) but we understand that everyone has different preferences. As far as the immediate area, we cannot recommend Trade Winds store more highly. They have dry staples, frozen and refrigerated items, wine/beer, fruit, as well as great sandwiches and daily food specials. Speaking of which, the best deal on the island would seem to be their large container of chili, with cheese and onions, for $6.95! Seascape restaurant (connected to the Maui Ocean Center) offers superb views over the harbor, excellent food at a reasonable price, and (my husband would argue, most importantly) $4 pints of Kona Lavaman Red Ale! We would say that Beach Bum's is worth a miss (mediocre food, overpriced drinks) but to each their own. If one were to be truly nitpicky, it could be said that the bedsheets and some of the towels were a bit threadbare but this is about it as far as "criticisms" go. Bottom line: we would stay here again in a heartbeat and, in fact, this is the precise type of property we would wish to purchase and keep all to ourselves!
I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the condo. The waves can be heard throughout. There is a well kept pool and hot tub immediately below and a beach I walked every morning for miles with no end blocks away from the entrance to the facility. Quiet facility. All items in the condo are high quality and well kept. I enjoyed all aspects of our trip and look forward to my next visit to Maui to spend some more time in Ma'alaea.
The location is such that you have easy access to Lahaina or Kehei depending on your preference, it really worked our well for myself and our group. We will stay here again when we come back, which we are all anxious to do. Mahalo!
This condo is a real beauty. Newly updated with very tasteful appliances and fixtures, bathroom, living room and bedroom. The kitchen is very well equipped, I was able to watch the whales while at the stove and counter, Neat! The lanai has a great view and the cushions on the chairs and love seat are super comfy which I appreciated because I spent a lot of time out there. The owner has provided every thing that you will need, including stone coasters which is a nice touch. A nice surprise was the small beach just outside, within the harbor. The grounds are lovely and I love the breeze that blows thru the condo keeping it at a perfect temp. Ma'alaea is a wonderful place to stay while on Maui. Centrally located and the rates are lower for very nice ocean front accommodations.
Compare to other areas, you don't miss a thing and there many conveniences within walking distance.
The owners were a pleasure to work with, especially since I booked pretty much at the last minute. They worked with me to make a smooth transaction, it was handled professionally and pleasantly.
My family and I stayed here for ten days and it was the best vacation ever! The condo had everything we needed and having the washer/dryer was a big plus. We had breakfast every morning on the balcony and enjoyed the amazing beautiful view. This alone was totally worth it! Staying at this condo made our vacation an unforgetable experience because it was a very nice location, quiet and clean. It was very close the the airport, Kihei and Lahaina. It was windy at night but that didn't bother us at all. It was a great experience for our first trip to Maui. We would definitely stay here again. Thank you John.
I really couldn't have asked for a better place to stay while visiting the beautiful island of Maui. This condo had everything that we needed. Nothing too showy or over the top. Just a very comfortable, very complete condo with an AMAZING view! Had breakfast on the lanai every morning listening to the waves crashing into shore.
The biggest thing about the condo was the location. While Maalea does have a few sites to see itself, it's only about 15 minutes from the airport, Kihei, 20 to Wailea, 20 to Lahina ... basically you're very close to enough to keep you busy for weeks.
I absolutely recommend this place, and I'll definitely be coming back!
The condo was not as great as the photos appeared, but the views were even better. For our first trip to Maui we were surprised by how windy it was at the condo and how noisy that could be. The bedroom window was right next to the outside hallway, which prevented us from feeling comfortable leaving them open at night and letting the breeze blow. We really enjoyed the outdoor grill, the quiet and views on the lanai and the central location in the middle of the island. If you are looking for a place to take the kids, or a place to walk to the tourist areas this is not the one for you. For a few days away from it all, reading a book and looking at a great view, I am not sure you can beat it for the price.
We have a huge mirror on the lanai, and it is spectacular! The views are even bigger and better. (should have done it years ago) We also just finished (August 2014) a major remodel! All new granite counters, new tiled rain and regular shower, new cabinets and appliances, etc.
