Amazing views, peaceful gorgeous surroundings and completely non-touristy feel, but convenient location half an hour or less to most of the places you will want to go. Right on the water, with a little beach in front, and a miles long beach a few hundred yards away. Beautiful furnishings, lovely remodeled kitchen and bath with rain and regular shower. We try to stock everything you may want (including washer and dryer and espresso maker) and it is an excellent value.
GREAT Value: We are charging only $129/night plus tax and cleaning fee from May to mid December! Only $149/night plus tax and cleaning for April. Only $249/night plus tax and cleaning mid December 2017 through March 2018. Always a very good value for such a nice place.
This is a lovely condo in Maalaea Banyans, on the third floor (great privacy and there is an elevator) of an attractive 4 story, nicely landscaped all oceanfront complex. It is in the quiet, peaceful village of Ma’alaea, ideally located only about 20 minutes from the airport, Lahaina, Kihei-Wailea, Kahalui, Wailuku, Iao Valley, North Shore windsurfing, etc.
From the living room and lanai, you have spectacular views of Molokini, Kaho’olawe, the coast stretching down past Kihei, and the base of Haleakala. Your view is framed by lush grounds and palm trees. The ocean is less than 100 feet away, with gently lapping waves. Usually. A few times a year there are strong south swells, and surfers come from all over to challenge the legendary 'Ma’alaea pipeline', also called the “freight train”, one of the fastest ride-able waves in the world. Huge waves, great surfing, and lots of broken surfboards right in front of you.
Another once in a lifetime experience: for some reason, Humpback whales tend both to mate and to deliver their babies right off Ma’alaea. Chances of seeing mating or births are best in January or February, but there is excellent whale watching from our lanai (or numerous boat trips from the harbor a few minutes away) from late December until mid April. Unlike California whale watching (where the whales are commuting between Alaska and Mexico) in Maui the whales seem to be on vacation too. They flap their fins, rhythmically thwop their tails, leap entirely out of the water, sing, make and have babies, and generally have a great time. April to December, you can still see outrigger canoes, Rays, Turtles, and the occasional Monk Seal and Dolphin from the lanai.
A 5 minute walk from the condo takes you to Ma’alaea harbor, several fun restaurants and deli's, a small shopping center, a well-regarded aquarium (the Maui Ocean Center), mini-golf, gas station, public transit, etc. They are convenient, but entirely out of sight and mind when you do not need them.
A 5 minute walk toward Kihei takes you to tiny Haycraft Park and a 5 mile long, largely deserted beach, backed by protected wetlands. Good swimming and hiking, sea turtles, and good to great snorkeling. (More great snorkeling is only a short drive away.)
There are a tremendous number of good eating options. The BBQ, grounds, hot tub, pool, and lanai may tempt you cook at home or bring back take-out. There are quite a variety of good restaurants in walking distance. And it is easy to go to Lahaina, Kihei, Wailuku, Kahalui, (or almost anywhere) just for dinner. When we used to stay in Kihei-Wailea we either went to Lahaina /Kaanapali/Napili for the whole day, or didn’t go at all. Now it is a short beautiful drive, so just going for dinner seems easy and fun.
Our condo has travertine tile floors throughout, good mattresses (new August 2017) , top quality furniture, towels and linens, all the amenities we could think of, washer and dryer in the unit, coffee maker and espresso maker, teapot, microwave, dishwasher, blender, Nutribullet smoothie maker, rice/slow cooker; beach towels, chairs, and umbrella, tatami mats, snorkel stuff, various size coolers, portacrib, beach toys, shade structures, boogie boards, even 2 size 6 kids wet suits, etc.
We think you will have a wonderful time. Many people return again and again, and we hope you will, too. (and we give a 10% discount for repeat renters)

About John Uhl
We love Maui, and bought this condo over 25 years ago to live in when we retired. We go as often as possible, and our kids and grandkids are hooked also. Our condo is ideal for a couple. If necessary, 2 more people can also sleep on the sofa bed in the living room. Our kids and grandkids rent separate condos when they come which works out perfectly for togetherness without too much togetherness, and is much cheaper than renting a large house or hotel rooms. That and separate cars gives everyone their own space and privacy and is wonderful for a combination of family togetherness, and relaxed private vacation time. Everyone can have time with the kids, and time without them for romantic dinners, snorkeling, hikes in the jungle, etc. In fact, we are going again soon with the kids and grandkids. Should be great! As of March 2017, we've bought another 1 bedroom, 1 bath ground floor condo (A9) at Makani a Kai, just up the street from this unit, at the start of the long beach. Our daughter and her husband bought (B4) and our son and his wife bought (B12), both second floor 2 bedroom, 2 bath condos in the same small lovely complex.
Why John Uhl chose Maalaea
Friends of ours in Maui (the owners of the place we used to rent in Kihei) lived in Maalaea Banyans and recommended we buy one when they sold the place we used to stay.
What makes this Condo unique
The more we are in Maalaea, the better we like it. The central location is outstanding, the views gorgeous, and it has a quiet, off the tourist path feel. In the early morning we often walk along the nearby beach (but it's so long, we've never made it to the far end in one shot.). In the other direction, a 5 minute walk takes you to Maalaea village for boats, marina, restaurants for breakfast, lunch, or dinner; bar, live entertainment, groceries, deli, great lattes, mini golf, aquarium, activities, or shopping. If you fondly remember Maui a few decades ago, or wonder what it was like, this area is as close as you can get. (Writing this, I can hardly wait to go back!) People come back again and again. They've found there is no need to spend a lot of money to have a relaxing, romantic, exciting, fantastic vacation getaway with wonderful lodging in a beautiful tropical location. Aloha! Have a great time!

Location
We are at 190 Hau'oli St. along the water about half way between Maalaea village and Haycraft Park. We are about 150 yards from the village and the park. We have a huge mirror on the lanai, and it is spectacular! The views are even bigger and better. (should have done it years ago) We did a major remodel in August 2014. All new granite counters, new tiled rain and regular shower, new cabinets and appliances, etc. Brand new excellent mattress August 2017. If you miss the way Maui was decades ago, or wonder what it was like, Maalaea is as close as you can get. About 150 yards east toward Kihei, there is a gorgeous 3+ mile, nearly deserted beach. (We walk several miles on it nearly every day we're here, but have never made it all the way to Sugar Beach and back in one hike.) In your early morning walk along the beach, you can watch the sun rise from behind the mountains while cute little sand crabs scurry in and out of their holes (pukas), turtles bob and feed, outrigger canoes paddle by, and (late December to early April) whales play. Wading birds call to each other from the nature preserve ponds behind the dunes, and occasionally you can see rays or a monk seal. It's hard not to just keep taking pictures! About 150 yards in the other direction, out of sight, but an easy walk down a pretty little country lane with condos and ocean on one side and trees and cane fields on the other, is a small village, a cute little harbor filled with boats, a well-regarded aquarium, the Pacific Whale foundation, miniature golf, and a few shops and restaurants. A latte is always welcome from the General Store while watching for whales breaching. Regular golf courses are just a few miles away. There is a a full kitchen including espresso maker, coffee maker and teapot, and one bathroom with tub and shower. We supply beach chairs, tatami mats (great to keep your towels clean when lying on the beach), beach umbrella, beach towels, some snorkel stuff, boogie boards, etc. Please let us know if there is anything else you need, and we will try to accommodate you if possible. In addition to this spectacular view, third floor one bedroom, one bath condo, at Maalaea Banyans, we have a slightly larger, completely remodeled October 2017, 1 bedroom, 1 bath ground floor condo with a nice view about 150 yards away on the long beach (Makani A Kai A9). Our son and his wife have a 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo in that same complex (Makani A Kai B12) and our daughter and her husband have a 2 bedroom, 2 bath unit (Makani A Kai B4) at the front of that same property. So 4 available condos in all. We've found that separate condos, and separate cars are a wonderful way for family reunions or groups of friends to have togetherness without too much togetherness! We do give a discount if you book more than one of our family's condos. We and our kids have wonderful memories of them growing up coming to Maui, and now we are all busy making memories with their children doing the same things. We invite you to make some Maui memories too. You will absolutely love it! Hawaii Tax ID number 011-188-6336-01
