|Minimum Stay||2 - 4 nights|
Amazing views, peaceful gorgeous surroundings and completely non-touristy feel, but convenient location half an hour or less to most of the places you will want to go. Right on the water, with a little beach in front, and a miles long beach a few hundred yards away. Beautiful furnishings, lovely remodeled kitchen and bath with rain and regular shower. We try to stock everything you may want (including washer and dryer and espresso maker) and it is an excellent value.
GREAT Value: We are charging ONLY $129/night plus tax from May to mid December! No cleaning fees or other charges for stays a week or more. Only $139/night plus tax for April. Only $229/night plus tax mid December through March 2017. Always a very good value for such a nice place.
This is a lovely condo in Maalaea Banyans, on the third floor (great privacy and there is an elevator) of an attractive 4 story, nicely landscaped all oceanfront complex. It is in the quiet, peaceful village of Ma’alaea, ideally located only about 20 minutes from the airport, Lahaina, Kihei-Wailea, Kahalui, Wailuku, Iao Valley, North Shore windsurfing, etc.
From the living room and lanai, you have spectacular views of Molokini, Kaho’olawe, the coast stretching down past Kihei, and the base of Haleakala. Your view is framed by lush grounds and palm trees. The ocean is less than 100 feet away, with gently lapping waves. Usually. A few times a year there are strong south swells, and surfers come from all over to challenge the legendary 'Ma’alaea pipeline', also called the “freight train”, one of the fastest ride-able waves in the world. Huge waves, great surfing, and lots of broken surfboards right in front of you.
Another once in a lifetime experience: for some reason, Humpback whales tend both to mate and to deliver their babies right off Ma’alaea. Chances of seeing mating or births are best in January or February, but there is excellent whale watching from our lanai (or numerous boat trips from the harbor a few minutes away) from late December until mid April. Unlike California whale watching (where the whales are commuting between Alaska and Mexico) in Maui the whales seem to be on vacation too. They flap their fins, rhythmically thwop their tails, leap entirely out of the water, sing, make and have babies, and generally have a great time. April to December, you can still see outrigger canoes, Rays, Turtles, and the occasional Monk Seal and Dolphin from the lanai.
A 5 minute walk from the condo takes you to Ma’alaea harbor, several fun restaurants and deli's, a small shopping center, a well-regarded aquarium (the Maui Ocean Center), mini-golf, gas station, public transit, etc. They are convenient, but entirely out of sight and mind when you do not need them.
A 5 minute walk toward Kihei takes you to tiny Haycraft Park and a 5 mile long, largely deserted beach, backed by protected wetlands. Good swimming and hiking, sea turtles, and good to great snorkeling. (More great snorkeling is only a short drive away.)
There are a tremendous number of good eating options. The BBQ, grounds, hot tub, pool, and lanai may tempt you cook at home or bring back take-out. There are quite a variety of good restaurants in walking distance. And it is easy to go to Lahaina, Kihei, Wailuku, Kahalui, (or almost anywhere) just for dinner. When we used to stay in Kihei-Wailea we either went to Lahaina /Kaanapali/Napili for the whole day, or didn’t go at all. Now it is a short beautiful drive, so just going for dinner seems easy and fun.
Our condo has new travertine tile floors throughout, good mattresses, new top quality furniture, towels and linens, all the amenities we could think of, washer and dryer in the unit, coffee maker and espresso maker, teapot, microwave, dishwasher, blender, Nutribullet smoothie maker, rice/slow cooker; beach towels, chairs, and umbrella, tatami mats, snorkel stuff, various size coolers, portacrib, beach toys, shade structures, boogie boards, even 2 size 6 kids wet suits, etc.
We think you will have a wonderful time. Many people return again and again, and we hope you will, too. (and we give a 10% discount for repeat renters)
We love Maui, and bought this condo over 25 years ago to live in when we retired. We go as often as possible, and our kids and grandkids are hooked also.
Our condo is ideal for a couple. If necessary, 2 more people can also sleep on the sofa bed in the living room. Our kids and grandkids rent separate condos when they come which works out perfectly for togetherness without too much togetherness, and is much cheaper than renting a large house or hotel rooms.
That and separate cars gives everyone their own space and privacy and is wonderful for a combination of family togetherness, and relaxed private vacation time.
Everyone can have time with the kids, and time without them for romantic dinners, snorkeling, hikes in the jungle, etc.
We've found using 2 condos for family vacations much less expensive than renting a house, more private than a larger condo, and we think, infinitely superior to hotel rooms.
In fact, we are going again soon with the kids and grandkids. Should be great!
Friends of ours in Maui (the owners of the place we used to rent in Kihei) lived in Maalaea Banyans and recommended we buy one when they sold the place we used to stay.
The more we are in Maalaea, the better we like it. The central location is outstanding, the views gorgeous, and it has a quiet, off the tourist path feel. In the early morning we often walk along the nearby beach (but it's so long, we've never made it to the far end in one shot.).
In the other direction, a 5 minute walk takes you to Maalaea village for boats, marina, restaurants for breakfast, lunch, or dinner; bar, live entertainment, groceries, deli, great lattes, mini golf, aquarium, activities, or shopping. (Writing this, I can hardly wait to go back!)
People come back again and again. They've found there is no need to spend a lot of money to have a relaxing, romantic, exciting, fantastic vacation getaway with wonderful lodging in a beautiful tropical location.
Aloha! Have a great time!
My husband, 2 children ages 1, 5, and I enjoyed the staying here. We we here for a week from Los Angeles and this was the perfect little non touristy spot to stay. We would walk to the beach every morning, go back to the condo for a rest then walk to the little cafe about 5 mins away.
This is the perfect place to stay if you want to get away from hustle bustle life. Majority of the residents or visitors or over the age of 50, making it super quiet at night. I think almost everyone in the complex went to bed early leaving the hot tub open just for us!
You dont neeeed a car, but because of our lack of planning we got one for the week. Plus we rode out to get malasadas almost everyday. The major grocery store is about a 10-15 min drive away (which we were at at least 4x). There is a little convenience store about 5 min walk and circle k is about a 10-15 min walk but they're limited in stock.
Overall, this was a great place to stay to get away.
Thanks to John for opening up your home for us to enjoy:)
Unit was exactly as described. Really appreciated the the little ice cooler on wheels that we used every day along with a lot of other amenities. Having a washer and a dryer in the unit was very convenient. Would stay here again. Had good communication from the owner. Several good restaurants, shops, and the Maui Ocean Center were within walking distance and also the harbor where lots of boat excursions originate from.
The best thing about this condo was the beach! Beautiful sandy beach that had great snorkelling. The condo was perfect; well appointed, comfortable for a couple, and a quiet complex. If you're looking for a quiet getaway to a beautiful oceanfront condo with all the comforts of home this is it.
Very comfortable and beautifully decorated with gorgeous ocean views. Fully equipped to enjoy everything Maui has to offer. Centrally located and short drives to best beaches and attractions. We would return again and again.
This condo is well situated with a great view and within easy driving distance to both West and South Maui. There is a great little general store by the harbour and the aquarium is a short walk away. The sea turtles outside your window are great company! The crazy number of mosquitoes were not - stock up on bug repellant.
Maalaea is very windy, which we didn't find problematic...just don't expect the winds to cool things down much! The AC in the unit isn't great - perhaps in part because the TV unit catches most of its output. There are no window coverings, so if you are travelling with young children who nap, keep in mind that it will be bright (and there are mirrors all over)! Pool is great and the unit has a number of handy infant items, including a play pen, as well as a UV beach shade. In suite laundry was very helpful. Be prepared to handwash dishes as the dishwasher doesn't do a sufficient job.
We had some issues with cleanliness, which the owner kindly apologized for. He assured us he'd mention it to the manager and cleaner, so I'd hope subsequent guests won't have the same problem (I had to handwash the floors after my 10 month old got filthy while crawling around upon arrival).
My wife and I stayed at this location for 9 days in August. John was super easy to work with and very prompt in his response to any questions that we had. We found this location to be spectacular as it is a convenient drive to just about anywhere on the island (Kihei = 10-15 min, Wailea = 20-30 min, Airport = 15-20 minutes, Lahaina = 30-35 min). The condo was a very comfortable size for two people and the kitchen had everything that you need to cook on site (we only ate dinner out twice while we were there). The two gas grills on the property work well and are actually kept quite clean. There is an air conditioner; however, we found that the condo stayed at a comfortable temperature because of the breeze. The bed in the bedroom is comfortable, but we actually ended up sleeping on the pull out sofa in the living room for about half of our trip so that we could hear the ocean a little better at night. The view from the Lanai is outstanding and it is a wonderful place to eat breakfast and dinner. We could watch sea turtles from the Lanai on nearly a daily basis. There is only a small beach accessible from the property, but if you walk down the street a couple hundred yards there is a long span of beach that is VERY sparsely populated. We did end up going down to Makena beach (about a 30 minute drive) 4 days while we were there as this beach was less rocky (but more crowded). We were able to do all of our grocery shopping at a Target (if you are from the continental United States you will find meat and produce expensive, but their other groceries are reasonably priced and in smaller quantities than Costco). The condo is within walking distance to the Aquarium and Maalaea Harbor (there are several snorkeling charters that leave from this location). Overall, this is a convenient, and comfortable condo that acts as a wonderful staging area for all of your island adventures. We greatly enjoyed our stay and look forward to visiting again.
We have a huge mirror on the lanai, and it is spectacular! The views are even bigger and better. (should have done it years ago) We also just finished (August 2014) a major remodel! All new granite counters, new tiled rain and regular shower, new cabinets and appliances, etc.
