This beautiful home is in a peaceful field and forest setting on the quiet side of Mount Desert Island. This house was purchased new from realtors that were going out of business. At the time it was sold, the company was using it as a showcase home. The minute you walk inside, you will know why.
I will never forget our first guest saying, "This house is beautiful! I mean really beautiful!" Like so many others, the first thing that captured my attention was how bright, sunny and warm the feeling is. In part, I think it is due to the southern exposure on the side of the house with the kitchen, deck and sliding glass doors. When you add the vaulted ceiling and large flowing design, the entire area fills with sunlight. There is an overwhelming sensation that comes with the peace of being in fresh, open spaces.
By using the back entrance, you will enter through the kitchen. The cabinets are beautifully constructed of real maple, the wood flooring in the dining room and hall were constructed to match.
When you walk into the living room or any of the bedrooms, you will find that they still look like they did at the time the house was purchased. Even the carpeting shows very little, if any, wear. (The quality of this home far in exceeds my own. It is truly beautiful in both design and construction.)
Sitting on the deck you can look at a field of meadow grass and wild flowers. Graced with tranquility, the couple that just departed at the end of June, 2015 told us how much they enjoyed watching the deer in the field while having their coffee every morning. At night, guests enjoy gazing at the Milky Way while listening to the soothing and unmistakable call of owls.
Located amidst Acadia National Park properties, there are endless recreational possibilities. Right from the house, a 15 minute walk puts you on some of the park's roads and trails, giving you access to nearby mountains and three different ponds. An ocean boat launch is only 2 miles away. Bass Harbor Lighthouse, (one of the most photographed in Maine), seafood restaurants, Bar Harbor, and the Swan's Island ferry are just a short drive. After a full day of activity, you can return for a relaxing whirlpool bath, enjoy a movie, or have a glass of wine on the deck. Fully equipped with everything you need to relax in comfort. It is a common sight to see deer, fox, and other wildlife right from the living room window or back deck while enjoying your morning coffee.
Our Guestbook: We are grateful for our guests that take the time and trouble to make an entry in our guest book both at the house and on line. We have completely filled one guest book and leave it at the house for you to read. In it, you will find many descriptions of what people enjoyed most while being our guests. You can use it to get helpful hints on everything from which restaurants were the best to which hikes had the most beautiful views and which ones they found difficult.
The house was purchased brand new by my mother-in-law. It was hoped to be an investment piece to give her financial security. Then the market crashed and selling it would have been at a loss so Larry and I try to rent it by the week to make sure her future is secure. In addition, Larry built an efficiency apartment in the walk out basement. For the last five years it has been rented to a NE Harbor police officer. He has a wonderful personality and offers an extra layer of protection to the house.
We have always used the back entrance to the house. There are approximately 13 steps from the parking area to the deck. We believe using the back door is the biggest reason the house has stayed in such pristine.
I want to be sure that the steps won't be a problem for anyone, or I would feel terrible! Having any kind of negative impact on someone's vacation would be enough to literally make me cry. The steps would definitely be a problem for me if I were on vacation! I just can't seem to teach my wheelchair how to master that stair trick. On the flip side, we are quite sure the steps keep me from popping wheelies on the maple flooring in the hall, however.
My wife and I do a lot of traveling and I will have to say that this was a great find on my part. This place was clean, spacious, quiet and in an absolute gorgeous area! We did a lot of hiking, some kayaking, relaxing, shopping and site seeing. Maine and Acadia are beautiful. Consider renting this place. Our hosts Dawn and Larry were great!
This is a great property. We stayed 8-30 through 9-1-16 and would return. The house was wonderful and we enjoyed the apple trees and ability to grill a meal on the deck. The house was clean and spacious with all of the utensils and paper goods we needed. The beds were comfortable, wi-fi available and apple trees on property for a special treat. Highly recommend this property.
"Wow! What an awesome week we had. Thank you so much for all the little touches that made staying here such a joy. The house was beautiful, clean and comfy. The perfect place to unwind after a busy day of hiking or sightseeing. Having a fully equipped kitchen was such a nice amenity - we made ample use of the kitchen and cooked meals at the house several nights out of the week to keep costs down so we could splurge on lobster and other seafood delights the rest of the time! Also, we are great "puzzlers" and enjoyed working on jigsaw puzzles in the evening. If (no - WHEN), we come back, we'll definitely look to stay here again.
“As a culinary person I was very happy to see how many kitchen items it has and I used almost all of them, including the big pots. One day we went to Seal Cove and I approached a fisherman "Gus" hoping to get some fresh fish and instead he gave us for FREE 7 very big crabs and periwinkles. I could not believe it! So then I had everything I needed to cook them. We did lots of things. Cruise to see puffins with people from Audubon society; we sailed on the Margaret Todd schooner at Bar Harbor where we also enjoyed some evening dessert and coffee and a dinner at La bellaVita ristorante and at the terrace grill at the Bar Harbor Inn. We went to the beach; had tastings at local breweries and had plenty of lobsters prepared many different ways. We visited the towns around. All of them were lovely and very colorful. Of course we did some hiking and driving through the park.
We want to thank you for having us.”
Even during the busy Fourth of July weekend, the "quietside" of the island still lived up to its name. The home is located in this area and it's a great place to stay. It was clean, spacious and very comfortable. The large, well-equipped kitchen made it easy to cook meals when we wanted to eat in. We would stay there again.
Dear Dawn and Larry, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The house and amenities are fabulous. We felt at home and comfortable. The house was immaculate when we arrived and was everything it promised. We did see the deer on a couple of evenings in the daisy studded meadow. Loved the quiet and the cool breeze blowing through the windows. Very convenient place to stay on the "quiet side", convenient to Bar Harbor and Acadia. We have rented homes on other family trips and yours stands out as a real gem! Peace and blessings to all who stay here. Deacon Don and Family, Wisconsin
Come share a piece of Mount Desert Island. Acadia National Park is always one of the most visited parks in the country. The views are nothing short of spectacular. You will find tall pines seemingly growing out of rocks, mountains with granite cliffs, hiking trails, ponds, lakes and salt-water beaches, and ocean waves crashing in fantastic displays on our rock-bound coast. Lighthouses? You can see as many as five from Cadillac Mountain.
Take in historic Bar Harbor. You can eat a pizza while watching a movie or listen to live music in the village square. There are bike rentals, sightseeing boats, whale-watching cruises, kayaking and rock climbing excursions just to mention a few of the adventures awaiting you. Lobster pounds and seafood restaurants are everywhere just in case you are interested. Not interested? How about gliding in a plane with no engine or seeing a lumberjack show with Tina from 'Survivor', or looking through the old Chicken Barn full of antiques or....
